IE 8

by Ken Deyell - 5/9/09 7:01 PM

I installed IE 8 4/29/09 as it was included with the Windows update.Ever since I have experienced nothing but "this program is not responding".I never had a problem with IE 7 with my Vista and I have changed nothing but did the IE 8 install. Is there an explanation or a suggested solution to this problem

Most likely

Most likely, you have some malware that worked fine with IE7, but the IE8 update broke it, and now you're aware that it's there, whereas before it was unknown to you.

The general solution to the problem is two fold. First you have to locate and remove the malware you have, then abandon IE in favor of some other browser to help avoid malware in the future.

not responding problem

by ramarc - 5/10/09 12:05 PM In reply to: IE 8 by Ken Deyell

the problem probably lay with an add-on that either isn't compatible with ie8 or didn't migrate to ie8 correctly. the not responding dialog often has an option to check for a solution on-line. have you tried that? it also should include a button to see problem details. what are the details?

if either those options don't give a specific suggestion, reset IE using the steps in the link (ie7's steps are the same as ie8): http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/06/12/628499.aspx
if that cures the not responding problem, then follow this link to determine which add-on was the culprit: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

IE 8

by Ken Deyell - 5/10/09 5:11 PM In reply to: not responding problem by ramarc

Thx for the helpful suggestions.I have did two scans and feel confident I am free of any spy or malware.Vista has a great search feature and when I typed in "explorer" it listed a shortcut to open explorer without any add-ons.I tried it and definately a noticeable difference in how web pages loaded it was more like with IE7.I will continue to see if it eliminates "prog. not responding".When I was getting it I only have the options to close..wait..restart.When I select "restart" I then get the notice " windows is checking for a solution to problem".

Not going to cut it

by Jimmy Greystone - 5/10/09 5:27 PM In reply to: IE 8 by Ken Deyell

Not going to cut it with only 2 scans. At a minimum you should be scanning with Malwarebytes, AVG Anti-Spyware, AdAware, Spybot, and Windows Defender. There are probably a few others you could throw in there as well. If ALL of those come up clean, THEN you can think about it possibly being something else. Of course these are all definition based programs, so there is always a gap between when a bit of malware is released, and it's been fully analyzed and a removal method is worked out. So you could have something known as a 0-day exploit, which means that there's no defense or cleanup available.

And like it or not, IE is a malware magnet. It's gotten better since IE6 was left to rot for several years, but it still has a very long ways to go. You would be well advised to find an alternative. Take your pick from the following: Firefox, Seamonkey, Chrome, Safari, Opera, Flock. Doesn't really matter which one you pick, so long as you pick one and then proceed to immediately pretend like IE doesn't exist.

checking for a solution rarely results in a fix

by ramarc - 5/10/09 6:09 PM In reply to: IE 8 by Ken Deyell

but sometime it does have a fix and it's a good starting point. looking at the problem detail will often tell you, in somewhat cryptic terms, the offending add-on. if 'flash**.ocx' is the culprit, downloading the latest flash install for your OS (not the browser) will usually fix it.

as shown in the links i sent, reset IE. if that cures the problem goes away, then the blame lay with an add-on. dump (uninstall) the ones you don't use and then re-enable the the others one day at a time. the one that re-introduces the problem is the one you should part with or reinstall.

You're Not Alone...Suggestions..

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 5/11/09 1:33 PM In reply to: IE 8 by Ken Deyell

Unfortunately, quite a few others are having performance and uninsall issues with Internet Explorer 8..

A few of the performance and "Not responding" issues are helped with the procedures below.. No guarantees, but it's worth a shot:

Try disabling the "SmartScreen Filter"...To disable the SmartScreen Filter on IE8, open Internet Options, then the "Advanced" tab, then scroll to and UNCHECK the "Enable SmartScreen Filter" selection, then select Apply, then OK.
________________________________

Another known fix for such is to open a command prompt and type and run the command below. It's fixed a few such problems.:

regsvr32 actxprxy.dll

___________________________

It's also a known issue that Spybot Search & Destroy or SpywareBlaster can cause a slow down when the "Immunize" option is selected.. Apparently, the large number of restricted websites causes the browser to crawl or freeze up.. Try cleaning out the "Restricted Sites" zone and disable the immunize options.

Hope this helps.

Welcomed Suggestions

by Ken Deyell - 5/11/09 6:29 PM In reply to: You're Not Alone...Suggestions.. by Grif Thomas Moderator

Grif it is always nice to get your input.Ed Bott who writes for zdnet made the same recommendation regarding actxprxy.dll At the time I searched and found this file in windows\system32 so I took from that it was registered.Knowing that should I still proceed with the command? I will uncheck "smartscreen filer"as suggested and I do not run any spyware/malware programs except todo a manual scan.

Yes, Proceed to Register actxprxy.dll

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 5/12/09 9:02 AM In reply to: Welcomed Suggestions by Ken Deyell

That seems to be part of the problem.. Even though the file is present, it sometimes doesn't seem to get registered correctly.

Hope this helps.

Maybe Consider IE Alternative?!

by shakethebabyass - 5/13/09 6:05 PM In reply to: IE 8 by Ken Deyell

With IE8 being so new to the game, These problems are going to be very common for awhile.

Ive notice that IE8 Self recovers more often now.

I Recommend using a more stable browser for now. I highly recommend Flock Browser. It is based with the firefox engine.

Good Luck.
Eric.
