System restore problem.

by marswat - 5/22/09 5:26 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by dustygirl

Not wanting to induce panic, but i feel this should be added just in case. I once had the same problem and through a long process og trial and error, found that my system had a virus which actually disabled the sytem restore function. Once I cleaned my pc of the virus, my system restore function became available again. May be worth checking. Unfortunatly, I cannot remember the virus name, but I used Trend micro systems online check to find it as my system was compromised. The onboard virus checkers were suspect and after this were replaced with better programs.Hope it is not that bad, good luck.

dustygirl has it pegged - virus can disable system restore

by royhcunningham - 5/22/09 7:44 PM In reply to: System restore problem. by marswat

I've had several customer examples of this scenario. Most frequent cause lately has been the family of fake virii (Anti Virus 2008/9 Pro, etc).

Symptoms usually start by disabling access to certain websites - notably the ones from which you could download a virus removal tool
(eg http://malwarebytes.org/ or http://www.superantispyware.com/ )

Once the virus has gotten past whatever A/V tool is installed, it's unlikely the same tool will remove it. Try to download one of the above and run it. You may find System Restore works fine again after the virus is removed.

can,t restore

by champ110 - 5/23/09 1:49 AM In reply to: I had this same problem running windows vista! by jsoup5

I have had this problem with XP and Vista, i found an easy solution to it. Boot from disc, then choose repair, an option to restore system pops up. Choose restore and it works every time for me.

Hope this helps you and others.

Simple, I think!

by HouBob - 5/15/09 7:46 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Regsitry cleaners lie at the heart of your problem. Use your machine for a while, let it 'settle down' if I can put it that way an dthen create a restore point. As long as you don't use a registry cleaner you can restore back to that point. Use a registry cleaner after creating the restore point and there'e no way back. I don't know why, but this is the case.

Auslogics Registry Cleaner (free on CNET downloads) has a provision to restore changes.

by EKlumppJr - 5/16/09 12:26 AM In reply to: Simple, I think! by HouBob

Auslogics Registry Cleaner (free download from CNET) does have a provision for restoring changes made by it during registry clean-up.

Restore registry

Most cleaners will backup the registery or recommend that you back it up. Can try restoring registry then system restore.

Windows system restore doesn’t function

by ke6tao - 5/15/09 7:49 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Another program is controlling that funtion... If you have an HP system you have to use their restore program. Some anti-virus programs also do this. Check for restore programs that may have come with your computer.

Good Ol' Compaq

by Tom_SF - 5/25/09 10:50 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by ke6tao

I have a Compaq 6350us w/XP and when I formatted a new hard drive and did all the updates, it included a solution for the System Restore problem but it only worked one time and wouldn't work again. Don't know why.

I often have the same problem. I solved it by always booting in safe mode and running system restore from there. Give it a try.

excessive firewalls perhaps?

by jeriboam - 5/15/09 8:08 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hello Jim- I also am Jim and from Cleveland, but long since a California resident; This may or may not be part of your problem, but I note that you state you have more than one firewall and my understanding is that one should only have one firewall active on a computer as there are often conflicts between them (which may be affecting your operating system) I also have the full AVG program which includes a firewall, so I assume you have 3 separate firewalls. If using a firewall of choice, I believe it is best to disable the windows firewall. We do that on both of our office computers.
Hope this is of some use to you, though I am not a computer tech.
Regards,
Jim

MS Should've named it "System no Restore"

by scorpious - 5/22/09 6:11 PM In reply to: excessive firewalls perhaps? by jeriboam

I turned off "system no restore" over 3 years ago for your very issue which your experiencing now here's my 2 cents worth.

Ghost or Acronis,if you need help with drive imaging or backups the link to radified will provide advice for free nough said.

Where do I go to disable the windows firewall?

Too many firewalls...

by kstenbch - 5/15/09 8:34 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

You say you have AVG Full System Security and Zone Alarm free. Most "Full" system security suites have a firewall, and Zone Alarm Free is a firewall. They are conflicting. If you have Windows XP firewall running, then you have three firewalls running. Turn off Zone Alarm Free firewall and Windows XP firewall, and just use AVG Full Security Suite's firewall. The only time you should run more than one firewall is if one is on your wireless modem and one on your computer.

I have PC Tool Internet Security Suite and from time to time, it finds a Trojan or other Malware on my computer. Look at the reports from AVG Security, especially Anti Virus and Spyware. Run Anti Virus and Spyware scans daily and update daily. AVG Full may run this as one scan and one update (update and scan daily. Run a full, deep scan too. If anything is found, send a report to AVG.

Before running System Restore in "Safe Mode," go to Start Menu, Click "run" type msconfig. Shut down start up items and non-Windows services. Restart the computer. Turn on AVG and make sure it is running (you may have to do this manually). Make sure Windows XP firewall is off. Restore your computer. If it works, turn things back on; restart, and you're done. If it doesn't work; shut down computer and restart in Safe Mode by turning off your computer. Turn it back on and hit F8 repeatedly after you hit the power button on the tower until start up stops and shows the options, and choose safe mode. Restore from safe mode. Do Not turn services back on until you have successfully removed your computer. You may want to restart services one-by-one until problem returns. When it returns, turn off last service you restarted because that service is causing the problem. Contact the manufacturer of the bad service to troubleshoot. They should do it for free even if it is HP or Microsoft.

System restore

by DOWNDRIFTER - 5/23/09 2:59 AM In reply to: Too many firewalls... by kstenbch

I agree. You are using too many firewalls, and definetely, conficting with each other and not restoring your p.c.
Another thing although it may sound strange, but could be an oversight,I would check the setting for turn off all drives for system restore, and make sure it is unchecked. But I say it's the firewall issues.
