Running Windows XP Pro SP3. I tried IE8 but found it made my computer run sluggishly so I uninstalled it (using Add/Remove on the Control Panel). Now IE7 won't open (flashes then closes). Also, I can't get Properties when I right-click on the icon, and Internet Options has vanished from my Control Panel. I tried re-installing IE7 from Microsoft.com downloads, but no change. I am now using Firefox as my default browser and it works OK, but I'd like to have the option of using either browser if I could get IE7 to work again.
Run System Restore to revert back to a time prior to IE8's installation, if possible, to reverse the entire process.

Thanks John--I had tried System Restore from various restore points (as shown by bold type on the little calendar) but couldn't restore. Finally I resorted to reinstalling IE8. It's working better than it did the first time, so now I do have a choice between using it and using Firefox. Also, when I reinstalled IE8 Internet Options was also restored.
I just tried to install ie8 and wound up with the same problem. Even worse. It would never run to start with, just the flash and nothing. Tried a system restore, same thing with ie7, can't access internet options. I'm running windows xp home edition on a compac presario. Ie 7 was working great until I tried this. If I have to reformat my hard drive because of this, I'm going to buy a mac
Like you I was satisfied with IE7 but MS kept pushing IE8 and I finally bit. After finding that I couldn't get IE7 to work right after uninstalling IE8, I decided to grit my teeth and re-install IE8. It works OK--at least I got some desktop icons and Internet Options back. However, it is VERY slow to load although once I get the browser open to a site it moves to other sites (using Favorites) pretty fast. Also, the mail icon on the toolbar (little envelope) didn't work the first time and still doesn't work the second time installing IE8. I spent hours one day working with a MS Chat Support tech trying to get that fixed until we finally gave up and he suggested going back to IE7! Not a big problem as I use Outlook and have the Outlook icon on my taskbar. All of this makes me like Firefox better all the time.
