I am surprised that you aren't experiencing conflicts/problems, etc., because I always believed we should never have more than one AV program installed at any one time! It's OK to use more than one Anti-Spyware program, but not more than one AV program???.....Gina
It's possible to have more than one AV installed, as long as only one is running in realtime. Having more than one running in realtime can eventually cause problems. The recommendation is to run only one AV and one Firewall, not counting a router hardware Firewall. You can run more than one AS program.
Personally I uninstalled AVG when Version 8 came out and replaced it with Avast, which I have used before and is a very good AV program for Free. I also use Online Armor Free Firewall, Plus my router Firewall, SUPERAntiSpyware Pro. SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster. These are running realtime, and play togeather very nicely. I have many other on demand scans, also use online scans.

Actually, i'm using 2 AVs (avast! and AVG), and 1 Firewall (Zone-Alarm Firewall). I have installed like, 3 AVs and 3 Anti-Spywares.
avast!, AVG Free Edition 8, ClamWin AntiVirus. Ad-Aware, Spyware Terminator, and Spybot.
I know that i shouldn't use 2 real-time antiviruses running on my pc. But, there ARE problems. My PC's kinda' slow when starting up. I set for more performance on active process. Not background process. Which's better? Active or background process?
The 2nd problem is that i have been experiencing crash. I don't know whether it's called freeze or crash. It happens when i play any new installed games.
But in your own NEW discussion.
I have tried most of the free antivirus softwares and have found tht avira's the best..except for the slow download of updates, avast's really bad in detecting trojans.. and the new avg takes a hell lot of time to scan and also it's detection rates aren't that good..avg does not have a real time guard..
Good day. I wish to weigh in on this discussion. I was using AVG 7.5 for quite a long time before I switched to Avast, and have been on it for almost 1 year now. Reason I switched was because overall ratings for Avast is higher than AVG. Can't really tell if AVG 7.5 was reliable on my system. Reason being it never showed that it caught or stopped any virus or spyware throughout the whole time I was using it. Maybe it was effective in preventing any breach, but I'm not sure. I see AVG version is now 8. Is it better than v 7.5? Also, I understand it doesn't cover protection for POP email format. Appreciate clarification on this. Similarly, Avast has so far not showed that it caught anything. Notable are the updates, fast and up to few times within a day. Now, I understand also that Avira is generally rated the best of the 3. However, it also doesn't have email protection and can bog down the system cos it's heavy on resources. How about a system with 768MB of RAM. Will it slow down the system as well? Appreciate feedback, esspecially on AVG 8.
I upgraded to AVG8 from AVG7.5. The upgrade was rough and resulted in not being able to either reinstall, uninstall,or use AVG8 firewall. Error codes were reported to AVG 3 times with not response. AVG Customer Service was notified that Tech Support did not respond. So, far no response from them.
I've figured out a way, I think, to fix the config file so I can uninstall the AVG.
Oh yes, I'll dispute the payment with the credit card company.
So, my experience may not be typical. But, to me THE big reason to pay for a program is Tech Support. It hasn't been there.
Be Wary of AVG
I have both of these running on m,y computer. (Avast pro) and the free avira. From what I have read, the avast is lighter, quicker and is better at detecting viruses. It is not so good (97%) at detecting trojans which avira ecxels at. The Avira interface is clunky too. But it has caught many bad things for me.
The worst thing in the world is McAfee. It blocked accesss to Chrome and to firefox and would not let me download files with ie. I could not remove it --in fact it was just like a piece of malware. Finally, I got rid of it by going to this site: mcpr.notlong.com which Microsoft tech support referred me to. This removed McAfee.
I have found that Avast coupled with Windows Defender to be the best config for me. AVG is not nearly as low profile as Avast, and Avast is very good at scanning incoming downloads. I would choose EITHER any day over Norton/ Mcafee/ spysweeper
My vote goes to the "Avira" antivirus.
My friend has been using AVG, but he still get the new virus without any alert or warning, so it is pretty useless to cope with the new breed of virus. Now I suggest him to use avast and i didn't hear from him getting infected anymore...
I have been using Norton AntiVirus for many years, because it was provided free to me. But on another machine I recently obtained, was AVG installed. And it seems okay. It does, however, pick up the same non-virus every scan even though I have tried to have it remember or ignore that file.
Anyway, here is a test (yes put on by the company that one I guess), but at least it gives you an idea of the top runners.

Note AVG came in 12th in the testing
Free Antivirus Shootout: AVG vs AntiVir vs Avast!:
http://www.brighthub.com/computing/smb-security/articles/34746.aspx
Avira is the best, with the best interface unlike *cough*avast!*cough*, few number of false positives unlike *ahem*AVG*cougg*. It also has a great updating system, 4 times a day and takes up little resources. It has great scans, and was not rated advanced+ because of its falso positivges. Overall, Avira's the best, avast comes in second (though don't forget to install skins for avast! otherwise it'll be too UGLY), and the worst : AVG.
