help!
running XP (sp3) Home Edition. i have a router with wireless and both
the laptops are able to connect to the internet (one on cable and one
wireless). but the desktop computer suddenly stopped getting a
connection. under network connections it says "connected" but won't
load any web pages in firefox or IE 8.
in "network connections," i tried "repair" but it comes back saying
"cannot renew IP address."
i ran the network diagnostic tool on IE 8 and it says:
error 12007 connecting to www.microsoft.com: The server name or
address could not be resolved
(then it says the same thing for other MS websites)
and then:
could not make an http connection
(then same for https and ftp)
it was working fine this morning and we didn't change anything that we
know of.
we were using zone alarm free firewall but uninstalled it, and turned
off XP firewall, but no change.
i don't find any viruses or adware; running avast and ad-aware.
confused,
wakaba
My modem resets itself every three or four minutes. (I'm typing quickly!) I get the same 12007 errors after running the Network Diagnostics.
I'm running XP and IE 8. Same thing happened with IE 7, so i installed 8 -- not so great.
Any help would be much appreciated, by both of us posters, I assume.
I have been fighting the same issues for several years. Gave up on wireless, only use hard wire into back of laptop now. Modem drop happens several times a day. Modem now with in arms reach. One lousy but usable work around is to minimize the screen currently up, power down modem, wait 15 seconds or so, power modem back up, when all lights have stopped flashing, start isp connection, start browser, bring prior screen back up. No work, especially lengthy emails, is lost this way. The issue, I believe after many years of this, is the quality of the telephone land line. I ran a new dedicated home run from my computer to the service drop termination box on the corner of our building. This actually helped a little bit. Now to go after AT&T. I believe the is the quality of the service drop connection on both ends. I will post back if any positive results occur. Good luck to all.
