Help Me Choose a GPS

by z1221 - 5/10/09 6:36 AM

I am looking at buying a GPS and I am stuck between a Garmin 265t and 265wt. Is the larger screen worth the extra cash? Also I've heard that the bluetooth phone device on the 265t is clearer than its widescreen counterpart.

Navigation screen size...

Whether or not the larger screen is worth the extra cash is purely subjective. Take a moment and play with both devices to determine your own cost/feature cut-off point. Personally, I like a bigger screen while driving, because it's easier to see. But when I have to take the device with me when I leave the car, I can understand the virtues of a smaller, more portable device.

Consider also that the 256t/wt both feature text-to-speech, which reads street names aloud, so you won't have to stare at the screen to know what street to turn onto.

On the matter of whether the Bluetooth handsfree is better on the 256wt vs. the 265t, I'm sure that the hardware of the two devices is probably pretty similar with the exception of the larger form factor. The differences between the reception is most likely negligible.

Constantly changing interference from other devices, different phones being used in testing, variable background noise, vehicle acoustics and device placement (along with a host of other variables) make anecdotal differences between models (and sometimes even units of the same model) a non-issue.

I'll Make a Few Trips

I'll go visit some dealers that are better than the big-box people so I can try playing with both of the devices. Nothing against TomTom, but I am biased towards Garmin because I have used Garmin products for trail use. So, I thought I'd have a go with looking at Garmin devices.
