How advanced in Windows are you.

Sadly at this point I use fairly advanced methods to resurrect the OS. My choices can be limited if we are using a name brand PC with only restore CDs but the RETAIL MICROSOFT XP SP2 CD and its install lends itself to this method -> Type XP REPAIR INSTALL at google.com

When that fails I pull the drive, clone it so I can operate on the clone then on another working machine open the registry on the cloned drive to manually delete directories such as Zone Alarm and other items that have been found to cause this. Then I pop the doctored clone back into it's original machine for a test. Usually we find it or we find a damaged OS that means we just put a new hard disk, restore the OS then put the old drive into some USB case so they can save their files.

windows sp3

I guess I should find someone I can take the PC to. Maybe they can at least recover the files before I have to restore to the state we got the PC from Dell. I have never messed around with removing hard drives and recovering data.

Can you tell a little bit more?
- model and type of PC
- when exactly did the problem appear (in relation to your updating to sp3)?
- what is the full and exact error message when you boot in safe mode?
- what happens if you try to boot in normal mode?
- what zonealarm (only the free firewall, or the full paid Internet security package)?
- what version of AVG (7 or 8)?

Not all might be relevant, but it won't harm either to tell all.

pc info

by diane1971 - 9/12/08 2:21 PM In reply to: Re: problem with sp3 by Kees Bakker Moderator

I have a Dell Dimension 8110, Intel Celeron D processor, Dell De051 series
I did an update on Zone Alarm Free version, then loaded sp3. The pc has not been able to boot up since then at all, not in any mode.
The first screen upon turning on is the one that gives me the option to boot up in safe mode, safe mode with networking etc. Then the pc progresses to the blue screen that says the computer was shut down to protect it, if this is the first time restart. Check for adequate disk space, if driver was identified in stop message, disable it. Check the hardware vendor for bios updates. Disable bios memmory. Reboot in safe mode.
Technical info:
*** Stop: 0x000007E (0xc000001D,0x78E98E2,0xF78E97EC,0x78E94E8).

Avg version 7, I tried to upgrade to 8 but was not able to.

Hope this is helpful. I cannot find out the computer properties since I cannot get to the desk top.

Thanks so much. diane

One word...Zonealarm

by make_or_break - 9/12/08 6:55 PM In reply to: pc info by diane1971

I'm guessing that you updated ZA to one of the more recent release versions (anything above 8). If that's the case, this unfortunately is your likely problem. The Zonealarm forums are FILLED with posts from people who have a variety of problems with Zonealarm 8.x, including the inability to get their machines to boot after installing the update. Doesn't seem to matter if it's a Vista or XP machine.

http://www.zonealarm.com/

Point on the header 'Community', select 'Zonealarm User Forum'.
Click on the 'I Accept These Terms' button, and you should be navigated to the forum main page. From there you could just about pick ANY sub-forum and you'll find plenty of posts complaining about the latest ZoneAlarm 8.x versions.

From the posts and my own upgrade/reversion of one of my ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite machines, it would seem that Checkpoint (the owners of ZoneAlarm) us again using its paying user base as beta testers.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner

If you haven't been able to fix things yet, this is what you need to do:

You need a machine that has access to the internet so that you can download an older version of ZoneAlarm. Last time I checked, Checkpoint pulled ZoneAlarm 8 and went back to the last version of ZA 7 (7.0.483, or something like that).

If you're using a free version of ZoneAlarm, you don't need to do this next step. But if you paid for ZoneAlarm or ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite, open up ZoneAlarm (usually by clicking on the icon in the Windows System Tray), go to the Overview tab on the left side and then click on the Product Info tab on the top. Write down the license information and set it aside, JUST IN CASE you may need to enter it later on.

Take your problem machine offline if you haven't already (I'm assuming you have a high speed connection; disconnect it from your modem or turn off you modem if it has a power switch). Now you'll have to uninstall ZoneAlarm 8. I usually do software uninstalls through the Control Panel (Start button\Control Panel\Add and Remove Programs). Scroll down to ZoneAlarm and go through the uninstall procedure. Reboot the machine as necessary (I think ZA requires it).

Get that downloaded copy of ZA onto your machine's hard drive, if you haven't already. Go through the installation procedure and with luck everything should be back to normal again. If the ZA 8 uninstall went correctly, any license information you have will still be on your machine's registry for the reinstall of the older version of ZA. If not, you may have to enter it in manually.

That's pretty much it. Good luck.

no problem

I could not even get the the control panel. All I was able to see was the dreaded "blue screen of death". I took my machine to a friend to have my file recovered before reinstalling the OS. She just installed a new hard drive as the C drive and loaded the OS on it. Now I have the original drive as a secondary drive and am able to access all my files. I spent all day today reloading all my software. So far so good. Now I just have to figure out how to set up an auto back up to an external drive that I have so if this happens again I won't loose anything.

Thanks so much for your help.

Installing Service Pakc 3

by John Butler - 5/11/09 8:13 AM In reply to: ok by diane1971

Diane
Zone Alrm is a vile program so remove it completely: whenever i have a customer with ZA they have many probolems it reminds me of the picture of a picture , the lacoon I think its called of an infant Hercules struggling with dozens of snakes just to stay alive.
I suggest that you choose a simple antivirus program and use the native Windows firewall with exceptions allowed. Then try installing SP3 with the AV temporarily turned off.
If SP3 does not install correctly then to not spend much time trying to fix it. Provided you keep SP2 updated you do not need SP3 and remember you do not get much help from Microsoft 'cos they don't want you to go on using XP3. They have given up you will buy Vista and want you to buy Windows 7

You do realize you're responding to a post from last September, right?
