Internet Explorer 8?

by shakeherjunk - 4/9/09 1:34 AM

I'm having problem uninstalling it. I even tried doing a system restore to revert back to IE7 but it didn't work. Does anyone know if Microsoft going to release something within next round of updates to uninstall IE8 and return back to older versions?

I've uninstalled both the last beta and the release candidate I had installed (and running IE7 again) witout any problems. What are your problems?

The installation instructions I read mentioned that uninstall wouldn't be possible if you installed XP SP3 while IE8 was installed. I don't think that will change. With me, SP3 was already installed before I installed the first instance of IE8. Could that be the cause of your problems?

Here is the issue..

by shakeherjunk - 4/9/09 2:16 PM In reply to: Re: unistall IE8 by Kees Bakker Moderator

I did a system restore and apparently internet explorer 7 was disabled. It was grayed out. I had to go back to IE8. I already had XP SP3 installed before iE8. So If i uninstall XP SP3, will it enable IE7 again? Another question, do I really need XP SP3?

Why Not Reinstall IE7?

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 4/9/09 4:50 PM In reply to: Here is the issue.. by shakeherjunk

After uninstalling IE8, download the full IE7 installer from the link below, then run it.. It should reinstall/repair your current installation of IE7.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

And in my opinion, YES, eventually you'll need SP3 or future security updates will stop coming.

Hope this helpes.

Okay...

In the add/remove program list on XP. I did click to uninstall IE8 yesterday. Halfway through the uninstall, I got an error message. How exactly should I go about this? Unstall XP SP3 first? If i do the system restore first to go back to IE7. It won't work. When I click the IE icon to open the webpage. It locks up and closes the page. ..If i do get the full installation of IE7 and I download XP Sp3 after the install of ie7..will it disable the iE7 from working properly?

That Error Is Fairly Common With IE8, Especially With Beta

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 4/13/09 1:58 PM In reply to: error message. by shakeherjunk

If you want to uninstall it, then try using the instructions I gave below in this link:

http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6142_102-0.html?messageID=3023917&tag=forum-w;forums06#3023917

So far, I've been lucky.. Installed IE8 on two different XP machines and decided to do a test uninstall on one of them which went fine.

Hope this helps.

Error Part 2

by shakeherjunk - 4/16/09 2:22 PM In reply to: error message. by shakeherjunk

I just tried to uninstall it again from add/remove programs as is. Here is the error I got in details.
Copy Error-
Setup cannot copy the file ieakmmc.chm.

Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert Windows NT Service Pack Unsinstall Directory in the drive you specify.

I don't have a recovery disk. This desktop is used and was bought as is from a computer store.

I found something on Microsoft.com. for uninstalling IE8 and XP SP3. I was wondering what method should I use on these links.

For Xp SP3-http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249/
For IE8-http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700/

I run on Windows Xp.

Give Those Links A Try

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 4/16/09 4:55 PM In reply to: Error Part 2 by shakeherjunk

...They may or may not help at this point.. You've done so many system restores, and uninstalls, then reinstalls, that there may be no going back without a repair install...

And hopefully, you carefully read the post by Bob Proffitt below.. Here's a quick link to that post:

Ouch!

Hope this helps.

I have not done anything yet...

I don't know where you get idea. That i have done all these system restores, uninstallments and installations. I have yet to do anything. This is why I kept coming back to this thread to see how I' am going to remove these programs off of XP. I have only done a system restore a few times. They were just bad installations of both downloads. I downloaded these both directly from Microsoft.com.

IE 8 uninstall?

by LAG - 5/3/09 4:02 PM In reply to: Why Not Reinstall IE7? by Grif Thomas Moderator

I was running XP SP3 with IE 7 and had no problems. Since downloading IE8 my computer is much slower and there are web sites that IE just won't open, I get an error saying it has to close.
App name iexplore.exe
Version 8.0.6001.18702
Mod name vrlmon.dll
Offset 0003e819
Are there any fixes for this and if not, can I just uninstall IE 8 safely (having SP3) and go back to 7? I have never done any repairs to browsers so have little knowledge.
Thanks, could really use some advice.

Yes, Unistall From The Add/Remove Programs Section..

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 5/3/09 8:22 PM In reply to: IE 8 uninstall? by LAG

For most, that works just fine.. If it does not, see the link below for the Microsoft IE8 uninstaller:

Hope this helps.

How about this?

by LAG - 5/3/09 8:43 PM In reply to: Yes, Unistall From The Add/Remove Programs Section.. by Grif Thomas Moderator

I've done some searching and see that the error message I'm getting is quite common although I haven't come up with a fix yet, if you know of one I'd love to hear it!
One Microsoft check I did on the registry showed that some modules were not found so I'm wondering if just reinstalling IE 8 is my safest bet?

Safe Yes, And It's Worth A Try...

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 5/4/09 5:00 PM In reply to: How about this? by LAG

..but it may not work simply because a standard uninstall didn't work the first time.

As mentioned, if it won't uninstall normally, try using the uninstaller tool I listed earlier.

Hope this helps.

Was this for me?

by LAG - 5/4/09 6:10 PM In reply to: Safe Yes, And It's Worth A Try... by Grif Thomas Moderator

I haven't tried a standard uninstall yet, I've been hoping to fix that error message. The only thing I've come up with is that it's a 'compatibility view' issue?
There's another thing I don't understand. If I uninstall IE 8, isn't it necessary to have IE available for an install? What's left as a browser if it's uninstalled? Sorry to sound dumb but browsers aren't my thing!! I'm afraid I'll just make things worse???
