Program for renaming pictures?
by jderekgeorge - 4/11/09 9:54 PMIf have hundreds of pictures I would like to re-name but I don't want to do it manually. Does anyone know of a program that will do it for me?
Renaming photos

There may be others. I have used FastStone for years and really like it and have used it to do just what you want. I can select any number of photo files and rename them to some sort of sequence that makes sense, e.g. a bunch of photos taken on a vacation trip can be renamed "California vacation #.jpg" with numbering starting at 1. Is that what you had in mind?
Others may chime in with their favorite software. In any case, you should be able to find freeware that does the trick for you.
Faststone is the BEST.
by john3347 - 5/1/09 7:57 PM In reply to: Renaming photos by Joliet EddieIf you are wanting to do anything more than just rename a batch of pictures, but less than professional Photo work, FastStone Image Viewer is the best program you can buy and you don't even have to buy it, it is free. I use FastStone to view and retouch photos, but still use the Windows rename function to rename picture groups.
Bulk Rename utility

There may be a bit of a learning curve, depending upon your own knowledge and skill level, of course. Once you learn it, though, it's pretty flexible and powerful, with very convenient right-click access. Here's a link to it on CNET Download.com:

Note: I'm using a version much older than the one I linked to above, so the program is probably even better now than my old version. I didn't even know the update was available until I went searching for it to post here. My old version has always met my needs quite nicely, so I've never bothered to check for a newer version. I guess I'll have to try this one out, now that I'm aware of it!

I just checked my own version, and it's 2.1.0.10 (copyright 2001-2004), and the version I linked for you is 2.7.1.1...I guess I really DO need to update!
Windows has the capacity to remane a series of photos.
by john3347 - 5/1/09 7:49 PM In reply to: Program for renaming pictures? by jderekgeorgeYou don't need any additional application if you are using Windows. You can select any series of photos in Windows (XP or later and I think earlier versions too but not sure about the earlier versions).
Once you have selected (highlighted) the photos you want to rename, move the cursor to the first one (or the last one) and right click. When the window opens after right clicking, select "rename" enter the name you wish for the series, then double click, and every one will be renamed with that name and a sequential number will be assigned to each subsequent photo. Example: you rename the series "Vacation" and the first picture becomes "Vacation", the second one becomes "Vacation (1)", the third becomes "Vacation (2)" etc until all are renamed.
Because of the way the rename function treats the first photo without a sequence number, I right click the last photo and rename the series from that one. This makes the first photo become "Vacation (1)", the second photo "Vacation (2)", etc, on down the line and leaves the last one, number 100, simply named "Vacation". It then becomes a simple matter to rename it "Vacation (100)" by itself. This method will number your pictures in the order that you currently have them organized.

Batch rename of files

This program will rename files where one of the new names is the same as an existing name in the batch, e.g. if you are just renumbering a suffix. This was one of my main criteria when I investigated this very problem and not many of the batch renaming programs will do this. This program can be found at http://www.xnview.com/ and yes there is a free version.

Also it includes many tools for retouching and folder organisation.

All I do is, I select all the pictures/files (whichever they are). After they are all highlighted I select rename from the menu, choose a name, for example my picture, what will happen next is that the first picture will be named my picture, the second picture will be named my picture 2 and so on.
If you are wanting to choose a different name for each individual picture, then I do not know of a program that would allow you to do this.

I'd second the recommendation for Irfanview.. the program has been around for MANY years.. aggressively supported, it has a bajillion features, and will do almost anything you could possibly want to do with digital images, save some of the more esoteric manipulations (i.e. there are things I wish it could do that it doesn't, but I have other programs to do those things).. but I've been using it since.. umm.. I don't know when, I'm still discovering new features in it.. and have used its batch-processing feature numerous times to rename a ton of files, scale them, or perform all manner of other manipulations.. I've been selling on eBay for eleven years and EVERY one of my items' photographs, thousands of them, went through Irvanview (for one reason or another).. after I transfer them from my digital camera to my computer.. Irfanview is absolutely 100% FREE.. when you download it (http://www.irfanview.com) be sure to also download and install its accompanying filter / plug-ins file also..
Irfanview NEVER nags you to pay for it.. has NO ads built into it, has extensive built-in help files, loads in the blink of an eye, and I've used it on computers running 98 / 98SE / XP / and Vista Home Premium (there's no Mac version I know of).. it's like an old friend.. I don't think you'll find anything better that's absolutely free..

this allows you to simply just rename files or. if need be, to just change one character.
