Same Problem!!!

by manderson4038 - 8/22/08 9:42 AM In reply to: I can't believe they continue to be in business! by cmcculla

My set is less than 3 years old. Started off with half the screen going black and then moved on to the snowy red lines throughout. I was trying to decide whether or not to pay $500 to have my local authorized Philips dealer replace the buffer board when I saw this thread. I think I'm just going to buy a new Panasonic and be done with it. Hopefully there is a recall coming???

I paid $1700 for this tv back in Nov '05. Ridiculous!!!

Do you really want to buy another Phillips set?

by tanty4000 - 8/22/08 10:31 AM In reply to: Same Problem!!! by manderson4038

Honestly, I would never purchase anything Phillips ever again. I've tried to resolve the issue with them by (1) contacting the Better Business Bureau (2) contacting the MN Attorney General's office and (3) My next step is small claims. So, that is up to you, but I would never buy their junk again. (I'm out $1800 for this set too). :(

My Phillips 42 in plasma was only 6 mos old - went off, would not come back on. Called Phillips - local repair who had it for 2 mos. At 12 mos mark it developed "blue ghosts" - called Phillips, said it was 1 wk beyond warranty date & nothing they could do. Today at 1 year 8 mos & it died again. I am throwing it out - worst $1,500 ever spent. Other fun story is the accompany surround sound system - again Phillips - died 2 wks ago. Phillips products are a joke.

Philips 42PF7320A - Black Screen and Blinking Red LED

by dantrimble - 1/21/09 6:42 PM In reply to: Same Problem!!! by manderson4038

My Philips HDTV is 2 years old, maybe 2 and a few months at most. It's worked fine until yesterday. Now, it begins to power up, does not show anything on the screen, I get a blip or two of audio, and then I hear the click as it powers off. Once it does that, the green LED goes red, and blinks in patterns of 7 rapid red blinks, followed by a few seconds of no blinking, and then repeats.

Philips told me it "might" be an electrostatic discharge. They also said it "might" be old firmware (which I can't upgrade since I have no screen to access the upgrade menu). They also said it "might" be something else, but they "are not qualified" to tell me what, precisely. I've been instructed to bring it to a repair place for diagnostics. I live in the San Francisco Freakin Bay Area -- in Fremont no less, a city of 250,000 people and they're telling me two closest places to take it are in Oakland (31 miles) and San Jose (39 miles)!

I'm LIVID. No television should last 2ish years before going out, especially one that was nearly $2,000. This is ridiculous.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, can you tell me what the problem was, the cause, and what had to be done to repair it? I'd like to get some more insight into the potential issues and problems before I drag the thing for repairs.

Also, if any body has had any luck getting Philips to spring for the bill after the warranty ran out on the grounds that this is an absurdly huge problem to have on a still very-new television, I'd love to hear how.

@#&^*@^#!@#*^!&@#^*!@#&^% grumble...

I spent a lot of time on the phone with Philips' customer support department, but the bottom line is that they "were not qualified to tell me what was wrong with the television". Their job apparently is solely to connect you to a local certified repair or warranty center.

Mine was out of warranty by about a year, but only 2.5 years old. Apparently at 2-3 years is the average age that plasma, LCD, etc. televisions begin to go in for years. I wish I had bought the extended warranty!

At any rate, I took mine to A&J Quick TV in San Jose, CA. There were no really "local" places to go. I had a choice of a repair center in SF, another in Oakland, and the one in San Jose. Nothing in between, even though I live in Fremont -- the 4th largest city in the Bay Area.

There ARE actually a few things it could be, so don't assume that what was wrong with mine will definiteyl be what's wrong with yours.

My red light flashed seven times before pausing and then resuming. When the repair people looked at it, they said that light frequency and the rest of their diagnostic showed that my Upper and Lower Y something (adapters?) had gone bad for reasons they had no way of telling me. They also said that when those went bad, they took out the Y Sustaining Board at the same time.

I expected the labor to be the expensive part, but it wasn't too bad; the parts were ridiculously expensive. All told, I was about $590 out the door using Samsung replacement parts instead of Philips'. (Would've been about another $100 for Philips parts, and since the TV already uses some Samsung parts out of the box, I didn't worry too much about it.)

Yep - Add me to the list...

I purchased my TV in 2006 - paid 1600.00 for it - from Sears - I had issues 9 months into it. Sears was out to my house 3x to fix it - but never could find an issue. The last time was 2 weeks before the warranty was up. They gave me a date after the expiration date and assured me they would cover it.. Came out and said - yep - it broken but not under Warranty anymore.
Call Philips and they said the same thing and there was nothing they could do but to give me the name of a repair shop. - The issue during that time was that the sound would just stopped for 1-3 minutes. They blamed it on my dvd, cable box and everything else.. so I disconnected it all - but about several months ago - the picture will go black with a yellow/purple line across the box - then come back on - this started to happen about once a week until a few weeks ago - now it happens every time I watch TV.. Called Philips again.. again - Now its that the electric surge builds up in the power outlet and needs to be unplug every now and again to repair.. it that does not work then you need to bring it to a shop for repair but we can not cover the cost.. I want to be the one person who can put this company out of business.. Every time I am in Walmart, SAM's, Best Buy, Target, Kmart, etc... I will tell the story about how sorry Philips customer service is and how lousy their product is.. I will even print out some of these complaints to show potential customers -

You have to take in to account that Samsung may not be the manufacture of the product. (I personally have never had any luck with any samsung product.. they all die prematurely.. HDDs/CDRWs/DVDRWs/cellphones you name it) I think that almost all of the items I had bad luck with were made by a outsider to fill in a price gap (all ranges of market). These items are usually poorly made. They are also cheap to buy. You also have to keep in mind that plasma tv sets used to be in the mid to 10k plus range.

Go to Philips.com

by tonyburke - 10/13/09 9:48 PM In reply to: Is the Philips 42PF7320A/37 a LEMON??? by nworking

Many of the issues mentioned here could just be due to the need to update your firmware. Go to www.philips.com; select Support, look up you model number, download the most recent firmware to a USB drive and install directly to your TV. It's easy, if I can do it anyone can. May cure a lot of the problems listed below.
