Death of BOL

by Rob-Sedona - 4/21/09 8:00 AM

I've probably listened to upwards of 800 BOL episodes. As BOL approaches 1000, I am concerned that when it gets there it will have little of its former luster. The recent "New York" episodes were awful.

I knew that the departure (mostly) of Molly would be a great loss to the show, but her replacement has failed to capture the spirit and imagination of the podcast. No, this is not a "hate Natali" rant, I just think that she's not a good fit to BOL.

For the first time I'm thinking of clicking the "unsubscribe" button on BOL, but I'm reluctant to relinquish my BuzzTown citizenship.

Anybody feel as I do? Maybe we should nominate a replacement from the ranks of the guest hosts.

"Not loving the show (right now)"

same here

I'm still subscribing, but am 2 weeks behind on listening. It's at the bottom of my list in podcasts to listen too, where it used to be the top one.

This has been discussed to death, but you're either going to have to unsubscribe or just use it as an emergency podcast when others aren't available.

It's still got GREAT content, though with a different vibe..

It's still got GREAT content, though with a different vibe..

My listening has been reduced for some months now due to work/life/community-service stuff. I check the BOL blog just about everyday for anything of specific interest to me, but I don't plan to unsubscribe...

Best,
Shalin

The show has changed...

...but I have not even considered signing off. I ended up following this forum as a result of all this controversy, but we all have our interests and also reasons for leaving.

I used to follow a different tech personality for many years (I think for almost 2 decades) in print and then podcasts despite criticisms of him from others. Only recently have I made the choice to stop watching him, but it's my choice. I have no wish to trash him to justify my actions.

So all I want to do is say "good-bye" to those who choose to leave.

I'm unhappy, too

by mattlp - 4/21/09 9:00 AM In reply to: Death of BOL by Rob-Sedona

I was wondering what BOL would be like when Tom was on vacation. I guess we found out.

I listened to the first 10 minutes of the last episode and then went to something else. I haven't been one of the vocal complainers, but I have posted my unhappiness. I've decided to wait for edpisode 1,000 before unsubscribing. But in the interim I'm probably going to listen to the first few minutes and go on to something else.

I've been listening for 2-1/2 years now. Sad.

no chemistry

by markx74 - 4/21/09 9:58 AM In reply to: I'm unhappy, too by mattlp

I think the old tone of the podcast is sometimes there, sometimes not. The New York episodes were horrible. I listened to the first few minutes and then moved on. There was no energy, excitement or fun. I think the chemistry is not yet there. It is better with Tom and Molly there or Brian Cooley and/or Raef. BoL needs to be more fun. It is just lower on fun these days. Sounding more like a tech news show you would find in a large network. Maybe just the result of CBS, who knows.

I hope they find their groove. I have been listening since the beginning and most changes have turned out well in the end. Jason is a great guy on the podcast. Gadgettes works. Right now, BoL does not click.

Exactly what I was thinking.

by Tavisd - 4/21/09 11:25 AM In reply to: I'm unhappy, too by mattlp

I think what we all are seeing is the natural progression of change. Which most people don't like, because it's new. That being said, I agree it's not as good. The flow is not there. Tom is an anchor and Molly worked so well with him. It's hard to fill her shoes. Natali can't be Molly, but can only be herself. Can’t blame her for who she is. I think he run better on her own. Without that the flow it’s not as smooth. It's just regular, not Great like it was. I like the addition of the guest hosts during the week.

You're right about the flow

by Ashcanz - 4/23/09 11:01 AM In reply to: Exactly what I was thinking. by Tavisd

@Tavisd
I think you're right about the flow being off. I think part of the issue is that unlike Molly, Natali won't "let her hair down". From the way others at CNet talk about her, she's a great person, with a very wicked sense of humor. If so, the "real Natali" is partly hidden on BOL, as she seems to be overly guarded, and speaks with certain inflection and speech rhythm akin to an on-the-air reporter.

The podcasts seem to work the best when the hosts speak to each other as though they were a group of friends at lunch together, just shooting the breeze about current tech topics. The topic gets discussed, and the chatter and humor has a natural flow.

So True

by Tavisd - 4/23/09 11:22 AM In reply to: You're right about the flow by Ashcanz

@Ashcanz - So true. I think she is a great reporter and again does a good job on Loaded. This is just her way. This being the case, maybe it will take some time, months, for her to become accustom to this type of commentary.

Experience difference?

by miniguy - 5/1/09 2:56 PM In reply to: So True by Tavisd

Part of the issue is Molly really knows tech, and being much closer to my age, ahem voted for Dukakis, has a better sense of history and is more comfortable in her own skin. Natalie seems to be presenting topics, where the other BOLers seem to be having a conversation that happens to be recorded. Kind of like when you get someone presenting a Powerpoint, and just reading the slide vs. discussing the topics highlighted in the slide.

Natalie typically reports short stories on loaded and the early show, and has a chance to research/write a bit on the topic. She just doesn't have the depth to jump on off-topics and still get the facts correct. Give her a few years to get more experience and she'll be fine.

Tru dat

by htallison - 4/21/09 10:13 AM In reply to: Death of BOL by Rob-Sedona

I TOTALLY agree.

I just forwarded through the last 3 podcasts without listening. Without Molly and Tom, this show is dead. The recent guest hosts are obnoxious at best, and Natalie is just too timid to make it happen. It is unnatural when she tries to force it. Jason, is, well- Jason.

On another note- does anyone have issue with the varying levels of the hosts voices? There are compressors and limiters available to aid with this, but invariably someone will be blasting while someone else in the panel can hardly be heard. I have listened with both headphones and through speakers- same problem.

It has moved from an engaging podcast to what seems to be an after thought. I'm thinking I am going to unsubscribe as well. Thanks CBS.

Audio Levels

by Ashcanz - 4/23/09 11:04 AM In reply to: Tru dat by htallison

Yes, the varying levels of the hosts drives me crazy also. Before I listen to each podcast, I download the MP3, revert it to a wav file, run it through Levelator, and then re-encode it.

Also agree

by clambreath - 4/21/09 11:04 AM In reply to: Death of BOL by Rob-Sedona

One of the things I used to enjoy about BOL was how much I would laugh. I hardly ever laugh anymore. I also miss Molly terribly. She and Tom and the chemistry between them were what was special about this show.

I'll still listen, but I don't enjoy it as much.

Post 14 of 46

Funny you should mention that.

by Martin.lu - 4/21/09 11:14 AM In reply to: Also agree by clambreath

You just made me realize, that that I don't laugh not nearly as often as I used to BOL, which is a shame. I've been listening from the very early days and the show has had its ups and downs and cast changes, I hope this is just another period where it's a little more dry than usual, but I wouldn't unsubscribe, it's become sort of tradition and I don't even know of any better shows..

yeah, I thought it was the bummer of the economy, but...

by shmody - 4/21/09 12:12 PM In reply to: Also agree by clambreath

yeah, I thought it was the bummer of the economy, but...you're right, I don't laugh as much because of the reduced chemistry and antics...
