Need advice for new camera purchase

by cmperry85 - 4/29/09 9:40 PM

I currently hav a samsung s730 7.2megapixel iso 1000. I loved it until march when I had my son, now I hate it. When I take a pic with the flash it makes my son look like a ghost or glowing alien, when I turn the flash off it turns on automatic shake reduction (which I've gone thru EVERY setting and cannot turn off) and blurs the pic. I occasionally get a great pic but it's rare. I'm looking for a camera that what I see on the screen is the pic I will get, I'd like to spend around $300, any suggestions would be awesome!

Samsung S730

That camera has several things working against you.

It sounds like the flash is too bright.
Some cameras let you adjust the brightness of flash, buy not many do.
Small cameras need image stabilization because a small light weight camera is difficult to hold still.
Your camera does not have Image stabilization.

When you turn off the flash, it turns on auto shake reduction, which is nothing more than setting the ISO higher and using digital image stabilization, which is not helpful.

The blurring you get is not the camera, it is camera shake due to the slow shutter speed the camera must use in low light.

All small cameras suffer from poor low light performance.
It is caused by the small picture sensor they use.
So you really do need to use flash indoors and in low light situations.

Take a look at the Canon "SD" series of cameras or the Sony "W" series of cameras.
..Avoid the Canon SD1000, as it does not have image stabilization.
All of the Panasonic cameras have image stabilization.
You should also look at the Fujifilm F200 camera.

The Canon PowerShot SD880 IS camera is definatley the best camera you could possibly want, it is even on cnet's top 5 camera list. It is a truly amazing phone. Here is the site where you can buy it, http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001G5ZTN6/ref=sr_1_olp_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1241049582&sr=8-1

Hi Cmperry85,

IMHO, one should always buy things (or goods) from the company that specialises in producing those goods for some time; in this case, a camera manufacturer to buy camera & not an electronics goods company (eg. Samsung or G.E.).

Therefore, look to Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Pentax, Sony (which took over Minolta's camera division), Panasonic (wich uses Leica lens on their camera) & Olympus for better cameras (in general).

THe cameras I can think of (for below $300 or slightly more) are:
Canon's Powershot A or Elph-series and the SX110 or SX200 IS,
Nikon's S & P-series (eg. P-50, 60, 80, 90, 5000, 5100, 6000 or L100),
Sony's T, W, & H-series,
Panasonic's FS, FX, TZ, ZS-series,
Petax's Optio A, M, S, V & W-series,
Olympus's Stylus & SP-series.

Of these, I like the Canon's products better; as they are more consistent in their menu, features, controls & image qulities!

Hope that helps a little.
