New to Dell Computers!

by drforbes50 - 3/23/09 4:39 AM

After years of being a faithful HP customer, I recently purchased a new Dell Studio XPS 435mt with the new Intel i7Quad Core processor, 8GBs of DDR3 memory, 1TB of HDD, ATI Radeon 4850 graphics card and 10, 100, 1000 Gigibit wireless card running on Windows Ultimate 64 bit OS. When I boot up, the computer roars like a Dash 8 prop airplane starting up. Once it's up and running, the computer has a steady hum and every so often roars for no reason. Is this common ( as the Dell tech staff tell me ) or is it something else? I realize this new computer does require lots of cooling but the roaring fan is driving me nuts! Can anyone enlighten me regarding this ongoing problem?

Sorry to read that.

You bought what is essentially the sports car version of the PC. It won't be as nice as your usual sedan model but should fly like a bat out of Dell.

There is likely never to be a resolution to the roar of the fans so my suggestion is that you cut your losses and start the return process fast, now and the next thing you do.

High end machines require high end cooling. And the increase in noise is the sensor increasing fan speed as processor heating increases. This done in response to processor usage. My high end IBM's fans scream at start up then drop down. It's the nature of the beast.

What may help, if you decide to keep it, is to remove one of the side panels. The resonance of the fans may be decreased.
