Hello, please help me choose a new camera.
I currently have a Kodak DX7440. I would like the new camera to be an upgrade to this camera. I will probably choose another Kodak as I've liked how user friendly is it, however feel welcome to suggest other brands as long as they fit the requirements I have laid out.
I am causal photographer who takes my camera hiking, outtings, normal social type pictures and uses it to photograph my aquarium fish.
Sometimes I take it kayaking in a special protective bag I have.
OK here is my list of requirements:
- Must be an upgrade/ better then the camera I already have otherwise not much point in buying a new one.
- At least 8MP.
- The same size or smaller then the current model.
- Will not cost more then $400 (this about what I spend on the DX7440 a couple of years ago) .
- I am willing to shop around and if the right model is more then $400 , I will buy it used.
- Will use the same memory sticks ( SD).
- Will use a rechargable battery.
- Will take decent pictures of aquarium fish/ has a decent macro lens?.
- Will take short movies ( Do they all do this these days?).. I think so.
-I have a mac mini computer 1.42 processor speed. It would be best if the camera would work with this.
I'm aiming to get this new camera by June if possible.
Any other suggestions appreciated such as things I haven't mentioned or other resources I should check out for my personal research.
Thanks in advance, hope to hear from some experts out there.
My personal and phone number so you experts can reach me is...HAHA gotcha, just kidding...
Kodak DX7440 - Ahhh - The good old days.
Kodak has abandoned that type of camera.
So have all of the other camera makers.
The DX7440 had manual controls and a viewfinder.
Those two features are hard to find in a camera now.
For the most part, only big zoom cameras have those features now.
The big zoom cameras are larger than the DX7440.
There is only one camera left that you could call an update to the DX7440.
That would be the Canon A590.
And I don't expect it to be around after this year.
Right now, you can buy one for under $150.
The biggest bargain in town.
I already have mine.
Well there is the Canon G10, but it is a bit larger than the DX7440 and will cost you almost $500.
..
.
Thanks, actually Cannon would probably be my second choice anyhow.
I've made a note of this model.
I wish they'd let you edit posts since I found some dumb typos in mine above.
Up until recently I ran the camera department at a department store chain and I have worked with a lot of people with similar needs to you. I would actually recommend a camera brand most department and big box stores don't carry, Panasonic. Panasonic cameras have great lenses and sensors for the price, and usually have a nice grip similar to your Kodak. There are 2 models specifically that I think would be a big step up for you. The first is the Lumix TZ5. It costs roughly $250 new after shipping. It is similar size (shorter but longer) than the kodak, 9mp, 10x zoom. This camera is going to have a better lens than any Kodak camera on the market. The downside is a very limited manual mode. The second option is the Lumix LX2. The LX line is Panasonics highest end point and shoot, and are usually a photographers tool when an DSLR can't be dragged around. It features 10mp and 4x zoom. It also has a full manual mode. You can find one like new on Amazon for under $300. I really recommend the LX2 the most. Check both links below and let me know what you think.
