Natali's always felt free to throw her political point of view out there, ever since Textra. It was only slightly annoying to me, but it's definitely there in a more noticeable way than other hosts. I'm not bagging on her or defending her, just pointing out my own personal observations.
culture of ownership? Those tangents got to be pretty frequent, but nobody (including me) complained about the injection of political philosophy into a tech podcast. If I don't agree with everything someone says, I know there are more alternatives than an all-out-attack without regard to actual facts.
And I'm not really talking about you--you were nice and fair, just stating your opinion and experience--the other one was just SO all-or-nothing extreme and SO political and preachy while saying someone else had been political and preachy. JEEZ!
Tho I did learn a new word--that's always a moment!
For quite some time, the only thing more annoying to me than a "Molly rant" was that hideous user generated "Molly rant" music they'd play after one. I almost stopped listening to show because of the Molly rants, but in time, you learn to ignore them, and in time, those of us annoyed by some of Natali's quirks/idiosyncrasies will either learn to tune them out, or move on to another show. It is, in the end, just a silly podcast that doesn't cover much you can't get from other sources.
I forgot to make my point to you, which was that the fact that "nobody" made a stink about Molly rants on culture of ownership seems to point to some other pent-up ill-will towards Natali being unleased because of her poor way of responding to what many might have perceived as a valid criticism. If people were feeling the Natali-love in general, they'd not have blown their cork over this. This is just the catalyst that opened the vent, it's not the real issue.
Molly would rant about the philosophical and political climate we live in as it relates to DR. M, fair use, and the internet in general. She would rant about politics interfering with good science when the bureaucrats don't even understand the issues at hand. These are issues that are shaping or hindering technology directly. They are in the news constantly and we see amazing products crop up and immediately be sued out of existence because of those specific political issues. Natali however in my opinion puts her personal political spin on some tech stories that are apolitical in nature. I don't like that. If you don't see it. You probably agree with her on those issues. It's often subtle, it goes unanswered, and is left as fact not disclaimed as one political view on a very complex issue. This bothers me. I've listened since before Veronica spoke. I've seen many transitions, and have grown to enjoy each new person on the show. Natali is obviously a qualified tech journalist that is fun and contributes to the show, but every other episode or so she throws a political comment in that ruins the podcast in my opinion.
You make two primary points: Molly's rants were OK with you because she did them about things you thought deserved a rant, and Natali's "spin" is not OK because you don't think they are things which should be spun. Spinning makes me dizzy.
Your secondary (circle-within-a-circle) point is that anyone who is not bothered by N's comments must agree with them and so they don't notice them. Aside from the fact that I have not given any indication whatsoever as to how I feel about any of her comments, that's not an invalid point--people should always look at whether their internal values and preconceptions are filtering or distorting their perceptions--but what's sauce for the goose.... You give no indication that you have given any thought to the possibility that you are over-sensitive and overreacting to a woman having political views, which--given your relatively extreme position and biases on the differences between the sexes--seems like a reasonable danger to consider.
This was not the point of this thread and I apologize for contributing to the temporay hijacking of it.
Jeez!
Can we all just get over this "I luv Natalie" / "I hate Natalie" debate.
If you luv her great! If not then there's a simple solution. Stop listening! That simple act will itself be a loud enough vote on what the podcast directors need to do to attract listeners.
Personally I wasn't so into her at first but hey... her arm pit farts (somewhere on the web) and twisted whooly mammoth humour have begun to win me over. And the fact that she read that email and made that frank admission that it broke her spirit won more points for her in my book. That took character! Kudos to her for that.
If u don't like her, just walk away son..walk away. The podcast ain't your personal property man..its just not.
I think Natali has been getting better and better lately. I wish she could be in the same studio as the other BoLers though, 'cos the physical distance between SF and NYC creates a detachment.
btw: it's 'Natali' and not 'Natalie'. Can't you people read?
She's a nice girl. I really feel sorry for her having to experience so much criticism...
Still it must be said, I don't think the show has been as good since Molly left.
I don't normally post in the forums, but I have been listening to BOL since the Veronica days, so I don't have years of experience like many others around. I do know that Tom & Molly are incredibly hard acts to follow they are clearly staples in every podcast they appear in, years of talent honed laser (yes I said laser) sharp. I think the only person that comes close to matching their talent is Brian Cooley.
Natalie does fine on Loaded and the other spots she's doing on C-Net/CBS. She seems to excel on scripted things and maybe that's her comfort zone. But I think in BOL her timing is just a little off and she's caving to the pressure of all the negative feedback. It's not because she's pretty or some kind of CBS shill woman. It's just something that will take time.
And the one thing I resent the most everyone keeps saying well "she's just a pretty face", "she get's by on her looks." Ummm excuse me but Molly is falling star on a warm summer night HOT, meteorite burning up in the atmosphere HOT, newly inducted into the MILF of the century club HOT,better than any blond haired cylon bimbo HOT, and not one of you guys would dare say something so rude to her face, because I do believe she'd cut you!
Just my .02
Natali keep pushing forward, those who believe in you will keep pushing too.
But even though I think she is one of the coolest women I have seen in media, she isn't by no means "hot". Now everyone has a different flavor, but I doubt she'd really rank really high on an attractiveness scale if random people were asked to comment. Her being so cool and cooky is what makes her very attractive.
