Windows 7

by {Eagle} - 4/19/09 6:49 AM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I installed Windows 7 using VirtualBox on my Debian machine, allocating 4GB of ram to the VM. The first thing I noted was the UI Speed seemed much better than Vista, even through a virtual machine it was faster than Vista native. The new user security model is much better than their previous attempts at becoming more like Linux, but they still have a long way to go. I think it will be a good upgrade for those who are running XP, though I don't see why anyone running Vista would want to pay for this upgrade. If the price point is right then Vista users will upgrade, but if it costs anywhere near what Vista did when it came out then it will be a deal breaker for most consumers.

Far better than Vista ever was, closer to XP than you think

by Chick Hicks - 4/19/09 7:34 AM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I used Vista for 1 month at the office and immediately formatted my PC and went back to XP. Vista is slow, cumbersome and unintuitive. Plus unstable as Windows ME (slight exaggeration. Slight). Even worse, I do lots of measurements using USB interfaces, detected as sound cards, and Vista's new audio subsystem just didn't work with them.

Downloaded 7's Beta and registered immediately. I decided to use it on my smallest laptop (Since it was a beta - 1 GB RAM, old Centrino CPU). First impression - it's very snappy. Even with full aero glass, it's almost as fast as XP's Fisher-Price interface. Switching to standard Windows interface makes it even faster. Every component of my laptop was detected and works. Memory usage - 300 MB. Sweet. Every application works out of the box. Crashes are kept to a minimum. This is a SWEET running system. Even better - menus and options are arranged as in Windows XP again. I'm not lost anymore. I was productive within 1 day with 7. I use it exclusively every day for everything. It works perfectly. Other than minor glitches (for example, icons that keep on rearranging themselves on their own everytime I turn on my PC), this is a real winner. If Microsoft makes it even lighter, and keeps bugs out, this will be as big as XP.

I love it.

wINDOWS 7

by johnains12 - 4/19/09 11:03 AM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My opionion for what its worth, having tried microsoft Vista it cannot get any worse, but maybe it can, Fed up with microsoft presenting in such a nicee nice way there latest gimmicky overloaded operating system, - Oh look I can resize a window with the touch of my finger - how exciting.
Why do we the consumers have to put up with Microsoft producing yet again another of there rip off operating software.
Were is the competion to produce a leaner meaner faster efficient operating software?
We the consumer again have no say and choice in this game that Microsoft play.
I would like to buy a new computer but will have to either wait till windows 7 arrives on the scene or have wonderful wonderful Vista installed on my brand new computer
Thanks a bundle Microsoft
Yours disillusioned and angry voice of the people

The OS is not just the UI

by John Howell - 4/19/09 10:08 PM In reply to: wINDOWS 7 by johnains12

The UI is basicly a warmed over Aero. Some nice features borrowed from all sorts of other OS's, but not a lot that stads out as being truely original.
Now the issue si Win7 is still just Windows under the hood. Patching will suck, and require many reboots. There is no SSH client installed by default, there is no DNS server installed by default, many of the servies and client that I need have to sourcesd from third parties and installed.

Windows 8 does NOT exist...

Perhaps you are thinking of the internet browser Internet Explorer and not the operating system Windows? Windows 8 does not exist, so I'm assuming you are thinking of the wrong product.

I tried WINDOWS 7 BETA and it didn't go well....

by Dr_Marten - 4/20/09 11:54 AM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi ALL,

I tried WINDOWS 7 BETA and it didn't go well on my
ACER TRAVELMATE C310 tablet PC.

Okay you can get it to change your desktop picture every so often which I quite liked but I don't need more distractions!! I got issues with it freezing and the main menu turning to black for no apparent reason so that I could not select any programs from the start menu. I had 1GB installed at the time too.

Now I have 2GB of memory installed, but I have not tried it since.

All I need an OPERATING system to do is work!! CUT , COPY & PASTE and to do the occasional bit of CD / DVD burning.
I do not really need any extras so I will definately not be upgrading.

This tablet PC of mine is currently running VISTA ULTIMATE but I may revert it back to XP as it was designed for XP ( according to the badge on it ).

I have not really looked at.>>

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/whats-new.aspx

as I am not interested to be honest.

I would rather try different versions of LINUX or / and try my money or winning the U.K. lottery!

It is now my prefered OS

by Baer - 4/20/09 1:43 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I still have few computers on Xp, one on Vista and my new i7 DIY rig has been on Win 7 for two months. This beta is better than most finished versions I have used. It is snappy, I have not had a single OS related crash (just overclocking test BSOD's which are not OS related). As soon as RC-1 comes out I will put three computers on it.
All of our company computers will go on to Win 7 starting with the Xp machines a few months after it is released in final form and then our Vista machines one year later.
We like WIn 7, just the stability and speed are enough for us.

Windows 7 Is Cool One Fault Thought

by Erkel Shawn - 4/20/09 2:46 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm Running Beta 7000 & This May Seem Weird But I when i Loaded It I Ran All The Updates available & Mines Runs Smooth, mind you compatibility Problems With Adobe Reader 7 Just Click Run And It Works Great. It Loads Alot Faster Than XP Even I Dont Turn Of My Start Up Programs. My Only Beef With It Is That When Ever I Try To Copy Large File Across My Network To My Machine I Get That Annoying Blue Screen. But I Can Honestly That This Version Is Smooth & Clean. I Never Liked Vista But Worked With It.

Windows 7 works well

by tennisc - 4/20/09 2:49 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've been using Windows 7 on my Lenovo S10 Atom N270 1.6GHz with 1.5GB RAM since January. It works just fine. It's not going to win any speed challenges, but for light duty productivity it's fine. It runs Office 2007 without a fuss.

My favorite feature in Windows 7 is the navigation choices you are given. First on the left side of the windows, and the drop downs in the address / location bar. I guess their called jump points? Anyway it's nice to be able to jump directly to where you want to be without having to click twenty times. Other points I like about the OS is the uncluttered and clean nature. XP alway felt like I was visiting a children's candy store when I boot it. Windows 7 looks and feels much more professional and current than other Windows versions. The best example of the polish Windows 7 has over XP I can think of is compare the Time and Date control panels of the two and you'll see what a difference eight years makes.

I will move to Windows 7 when it is released, at least for my PCs. I'm using OS X for most of my work.

I'd love to get all my clients moved to Windows 7 as soon as it's released, but I know I'll have a bit of retraining and de-programing to do to get some of the most entrenched users off XP.

I had used 1,5 years and felt comfortable with Windows 7. I think it good and no problem.

I'm only an amateur enthusiast, in my final year of high school, so only I can only share observations and opinions rather than advice.

I've put the Beta Windows 7 32-bit on three machines, one being a recent C2D gen desktop, another being a Pentium III desktop and one of which is this notebook about 5-6 years old (I forget but it came with Office XP (2002) so I estimate)

Running on a Intel Celeron 1.3GHz with 768MB ram, this notebook just scrapes in the spec requirements for Win7 and yet Win7 surely does run beautifully on it, which testifies (to me) a real result of MS's trimming on Vista SP2 (haha) aiming to penetrate the Netbook market.

More processing intensive tasks such as encoding sound tracks, editing DVD movie files, using products such as Adobe Photoshop CS2 have posed no real challenge for my ageing friend.

Someone (either in this thread, or the third suggeseted thread by Lee) mentioned that running Win7 on older machines should be ok, and I have truly experienced it.

However the fallback of using older machines is the availability of compatible drivers. Whilst I have been able to operate Win7 on the older notebook, HP has not bothered to write drivers for the Intel video card or soundcard with Vista let alone Win7 so the higher aesthetic features such as the cool mouseover-outlines-your-windows-to-see-the-desktop, as well watching any video/movie clip (such CNET TV) fails as well as the sound being stuttery. Besides from that, Win7 works almost as fast as WinXP Home that the Compaq came with.

Personally, I'm looking to upgrade my laptop for university next year but I'm holding out for MS to release the stable Win7.

Windows 7, More Intuitive, Faster, More Compatible

by windmill414 - 4/23/09 5:42 AM In reply to: Specs by sharewic

I really like the new Windows 7, have found that it works well with Adobe Acrobat Pro, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and ALK Copilot for Truckers. I really like the menus and the way everything that you're used to doing it still the same.
Great Job Microsoft!
