XP Home Telnet?

by robtcmarshall - 4/18/09 2:47 PM

I had to have a computer security scan on my PC, as I use it for a web-based business with credit card processing. The scan came back "FAIL" due to its finding Telnet on port tcp/23, and telnet is not allowed. The problem is, I'm running XP Home edition (SP3), and XP Home doesn't offer telnet as a service. (I spent about an hour trying to figure out why I couldn't find telnet in the list of services before I found that out--via CNET!)
My question--I have to kill telnet or the credit card companies will not allow me to process. But I can't kill it because I can't find it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks very much.

To kill it we have to find it first.

http://www.bytefusion.com/products/tp/bftelnet/whatisbftelnet.htm is just one of a few thousand softwares that could be installed.

To get to the bottom of this post your HIJACKTHIS log here and I'll see if I can find it.

Below is your pared down HJT log file. But here's an article about telneting to a SQL server -> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=telnet+to+sql+server+2005

So that's it from what I can tell.

I'll disable all the SQL servers and run the scan again.

I appreciate your help.
