I have a choice to make between a laptop with a 2.0 ghz Centrino core 2 duo or a 2.4 ghz one. Both laptops come with 4gb memory. The 2.0 laptop comes with a 320gb hd. The 2.4 laptop comes with a 250 gb hd. The 2.4 is $130 more. Which cpu would you get? My inclination is toward the 2.4. I'd rather the speed increase, but is it a significant speed increase?
You won't get a chance later to change it up. It's simply 20% more cpu ooomph and the dollar amount looks to be a steal.

the Asus N20A-X1 with 2 2.4ghz processors. Only sold at Newegg.
Thanks for your input Bob!
I've found the CPU choice to be a forever item. Get the machine with the best, fastest parts that you can't change later easily. I've seen a few CPU changes on laptops and it's never a sure thing.
the graphics cards, Hard drive RPM's to compare the overall speed of the laptop.
Keep in mind that a 20% increase in clockspeed also means a reduction in battery life and an increase in heat output.
Intel makes several 2.0GHz C2D processors- currently the T6400 and P7350, as well as the older T5800 and T5870. The 2.4GHz is most likely the P8600 (unless it is the older T8300)?
If we're comparing the P7350 and P8600, the battery life will be very similar. The TDP of both models is 25W, so the 2.4GHz will not generate more heat than the 2.0GHz.
If the 2.0GHz is the T6400 (or a T5800/T5870), it will actually have shorter battery life AND generate more heat than the faster 2.4GHz P8600!
The 2.0 laptop comes with a 320gb hd. Plus you will only notice a minor performance increase between a 2.4 & a 2.0. I'd say save that $130 & get the bigger hard drive. 0.4 ghz + smaller hard drive is not worth $130.
