by billwild - 4/17/09 6:36 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

So far it's been really good for a beta!.Smooth, better than Vista. Fantastic taskbar. Icons too. And the Aero works better. If U R running hardware on Vista without any problems then U shouldn't have to upgrade. yes I will B going to Win7. I'll do a clean install when I do, mostly because when I upgraded from 98 to XP i had several issues. When I did a clean install wiyh XP I had no issues. That's my own opinion. And then again that what works best for me. One of the best features is the slid control in the UAC settings. NO POP UP BOXES or hassles like in VISTA. One last thing. If U R working mostly with VISTA then U shouldn't have any trouble working with Win7. If U R working with Win XP like I have on my personal machine, then using Win7 was a new experience for me. I use Vista at work, but that's a work environment. My home comp. is XP and using Win7 for the first 30days or so was, well was different. But since using it there is no comparison between Win7 and XP. My suggestion, Get Win7 when it comes out.

My humble opinion

by Meatball.[oni] - 4/17/09 6:38 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Windows 7 is still in beta, but even given that, it is already in many regards Vista's equal. I have never had a problem running it on my Toshiba P100 laptop. Considering at this stage in beta, Vista still had some serious issues (wait at this stage in BETA?? It still has serious issues!!).

In regards to hardware, 7 is designed to be "lighter" than Vista, so any machine currently running Vista will run 7 just fine.

Will I be upgrading to 7? Lets just say that their won't be a single Vista PC in my house.

Will I or won't I?

I've heard very good things about Windows 7, but here's my problem. I bought a new machine the DAY before Vista was released. I got a free upgrade offer, sent it off via email, some sort of natural disaster (portent?) caused my application to be lost, an earthquake wherever Microsoft had farmed that out to, and they said I needed to resubmit. Well, I'd been using XP Pro for years at home, though my last system was mangled by that "hang" problem, for which as far as I know, no one has yet found a resolution for, mup.sys, anyone remember that? Gawd knows there are a zillion google entries about it. Couldn't boot the system, it would hang at that file. So I bought an HP Media Center Pavilion running XP Media Center 2005. It is still up and running beautifully, 2 GB ram, and quick as anything.

And, despite what the offsite Vista upgrade center place told me, in May that year, I got a Vista upgrade disk. By then the myriad issues with Vista had reared and I never installed it. My office, 8000 employees, is still using XP. From what I have read, it will be darn near impossible to upgrade directly from XP to Windows 7. If that turns out to be the case, I will continue using this PC at home, and accepting the critical security patches that Microsoft promises to continue issuing and relying on my other tools, to keep my machine safe. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I get the Microsoft position, by Win95 was a stable system, everything between it and XP was junk. Sometimes awful junk, I learned the hard way. So, I guess I will NOT bother with Windows 7 until I absolutely have to, and that will be when this machine dies, or at least fails beyond my ability to fix it. I don't trust, by nature, monolith's of any kind, and Microsoft, well, has earned its reputation as a bad guy and an entity interested only in profit, not user experience. They keep trying to fix things that aren't broken, and drive the rest of the world nuts in the process. I haven't used a MS browser in years, though, I do have IE 7 on my machine and keep it updated, I use Firefox, which allows me with a mouse click to change rendering engines and display any tab in IE, for updates, or whatever. I rarely use it, but I have. I have heard nothing but horror stories about IE 8, won't ever use it, I expect. Wouldn't it be something if these people could get together and put out a great operating system AND a secure browser that does everything Firefox can do? Perhaps the competition is healthy but end users are hurt in the process, caught in the cross fire so to speak. In any event, Windows 7 will wait until I buy a new pc. Or a very long time, I hope... :^) gene

Just a little current info

by REMincks - 4/17/09 6:55 PM In reply to: Will I or won't I? by genej313

To date there have been no rel problems with the release of the full version, so as yet there are no reported issues to worry about there.
On another topic not only does XP easily upgrade to Windows7 but there have been no driver issuues to date.My company currently runs aproximately 55000 machines running both XP and Vista but they already have a plan in effect to Upgrade all systems to Windows7 within 6 months of release. As part of their testing phase they switched the Accountind deroartment of one of our subsidiarys (330+ machines) over to Windows7 and are experiencing no problems what so ever, even with our proprietary accounting package which was designed to run on XP systems.

smaller, faster and better (?)

by pclark - 4/17/09 6:46 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have found 7 to be smaller and faster than the Vista Ultimate I had. It hasn't crashed and seems to be working well as a Beta. It does not like Firefox. Firefox 3.0.8 crashes regularly.
My Office 2007 has had no problems and I am running at an Intel Atom at 1.6 Ghz with only 1.0 Gig of ram.

Crashing Firefox?

by genej313 - 4/17/09 7:08 PM In reply to: smaller, faster and better (?) by pclark

Is a deal breaker for me. Version 3.0.8 DOES have some issues, but I'll never go back to an IE browser, am not fond of Opera, Sea Monkey, or Chrome. They'll have to stop fighting Mozilla and make it work with Firefox, before I'll even consider it. Thought I AM heartened by what I've read here tonight. :^)

I am currently running the latest version of firefox for

by REMincks - 4/17/09 7:17 PM In reply to: Crashing Firefox? by genej313

testing purposes under Windows7 build 7000 and I have found absolutely no errors with it running on a windows7 system. That being said I still prefer IE8 as with the offical release all of the past issues where resolved and to date I have had abolutely no lock up which didn't also occur under other browsers. I would however have to agree that opera sucks.

Windows 7 Beta

by clafore - 4/17/09 6:55 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Forget about "more features" for the moment. Most importantly, not a single crash for any reason do far. Boot time cut by about 2/3rds. Memory usage at dead stop down about 1/3rd. These three reasons lone make Win7 a must get when it does release, which will be none too soon for me.

Windows 7

by Xavier - 4/17/09 7:22 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Windows 7 is much better than Vista..I love the fact that it doesn't use as much system resources like Vista. Upgrading to the beta version was a challenge it took me over 2 hour to successfully upgrade to windows 7 (wasn't too happy about that) LOL...Overall, I did experience some issues with iTunes..For some unknown reason, iTunes would crash at least 1 to 2 times a day. I would definitely recommend this upgrade to anyone who is running windows vista.

Maybe they will find one that works ?

by diamondsmama - 4/17/09 7:41 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I finally broke down and purchased a system with XP last year . I loved 98 , but when they quit support and updates that forced me to upgrade . I will soon be moving to Apple mac since they are much better about their system support and more stable OS . I have had it with windows and changing their OS everytime they get a good one that works , thereby forcing customers to upgrade when they quit supporting the software that they wrote in the first place . I hope microsoft finally gets a OS that they are happy with , until that happens , I will be a mac user for now .

Windows 7 really better than vista?????????

by holyman842 - 4/17/09 7:42 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I used windows 98,ME,2000,Xp,XP64,Vista and windows 7.Although i was impressed by the promising features microsoft offered in the beta version of windows 7 i feel something lacking.Win98,2000,Xp were the best os microsoft had built but vista on the other hand hangs itself without any reason and also i feel like it is against multitasking but these problems were removed in the beta version of windows 7.
Although microsoft promised the drivers that worked in vista will work in windows 7 it didn't really. My tv tuner card, and bluetooth drivers were not supported on windows 7 but they worked fine in vista.
Moreover some older programs that ran on win xp,walked on vista, didn't even crawl on windows 7.I hope microsoft gets rid of these problems in the final release.
But most importantly windows 7 gave me a higher base score than on vista so i am really happy there. So with a few fixes Windows 7 will be just fine..

Windows 7 to Destroy OSX?

by Spywell - 4/17/09 8:41 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I worked in a tech shop that serviced both windows and apple computers when Vista was released. I witnessed a lot of frustrated Windows users switching over to Apple because of their hate for Vista.

Now with Windows 7 I am witnessing the exact opposite. Apple users are falling in love with windows seven this really blew my mind since most Apple users barricade themselves from any other brand. Truthfully out of the last ten Apple users I have talked to eight said they liked windows 7 beta so much that they WILL switch and only two are staying with apple but give microsoft props on a great beta.

I kid you not I was very shocked; Before you go labeling me a liar I am a Digital Media Specialist, and I was trained on a Mac.

Snappier?

by Patrick OBryan - 4/17/09 9:37 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Anyone else notice the prevalence of the word "snappier" used in positive entries about this OS? I have always wondered if Microsoft would use it's personnel or marketing resources to blog favorably for their product. Is the word snappy a common term? It's not in my neck of the woods. It's almost like a marketing company picked that term and sent it out in a general internal memo. "Snappier," ya, that's it! It's snappier.

Pardon me, I just threw up on my keyboard. My anger management classes are going well, so maybe after a few years I will forgive Microsoft for Vista.

So, while we are using the marketing term "snappier," let's all learn a new word... "shill."

Won't be goin there!

I have heard a lot of good things about Windows 7. But I won't be going there. I am sticking with Linux, which I have used practically since its inception. If not Linux, I would go to Mac before going to Windows of any flavor!

Windows 7

by vampyres - 4/17/09 10:47 PM In reply to: Windows 7, please enlighten me with your opinions on this to be released OS by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

First of all, I have suffered "upgrades" from Windows 3.1 to 3.11 to Windows 95 to 98 to ME to XP to VISTA over the last 16 years of computer ownership. Now its' Windows 7. If these people are so smart, aside from lining Microsoft's pockets for yet another system "upgrade" (replacement), why can't they come up with some way to actually upgrade the current system (much like a service pack) that would not require an expensive repurchase of your machines operating system?
System stability has always been a Microsoft issue. We are told that the next one is always more stable. Do they dole this out to us in small increments deliberately?
So will I upgrade? I currently have 3 laptops in my house, 1 XP, 1 XP Pro, 1 Vista Home Premium. I will hold out as long as I can this time.
I do like Vista except for Office 2007 (really like Office 2003 MUCH better).
Overall, I am dismayed that anyone feels that we need a completely new operating system, yet again.
