upgrading from graphics adapter on motherboard to card

by mobkins - 3/29/09 10:10 PM

I have a Gateway GT5032, which came with an nvidia GeForce 6100 chip on the motherboard. Photoshop CS4 doesn't like the 6100, I want to get an nvidia 8800 or 9800 card. I've added cards before, I don't really want to mess with the motherboard. Am I going to have to do anything to disable the 6100 on the motherboard before XP will recognize the card?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, you have to disable the Onboard graphic card from Mother Board bios before Install new external graphic card. try to search in Bios to disable onboard graphic card.

upgrading gt5032

you do not need to disable the onboard video... it will automatically be disabled when you add a pci-express video card.

you only have a 300w power supply and it is too small for a 9800gt. you'll need to replace it also with a 400w or larger unit.

coolermaster 500w, $40+shipping
antec 430w, 80plus certified, $55
corsair 450w, 80plus certified, $67

8800/9800 cards have both been superseded and aren't very good values since they're still $120 or so. a 9600gt has 90% of the performance of an 8800gt.
pny geforce 9600gt, 512mb, $80+shipping
the geforce gts 250 is 10% faster than the 9800gt and is the best choice for $130.
evga geforce gts520, 512mb, $130+shipping

upgrading gt5032

by mobkins - 3/31/09 10:53 AM In reply to: upgrading from graphics adapter on motherboard to card by mobkins

Thanks for all the info, I'm not a gamer or real tech savvy, so I'm going with Adobe's list of tested cards, which does include the 9600gt. Looks like I'll need to get a new psu also, hopefully won't have to mess with the BIOS, but I can if I need to.

Thanks again everybody!

Two ways to disable the on board . . .

by Coryphaeus - 3/31/09 11:01 AM In reply to: upgrading gt5032 by mobkins

1.) BIOS

2.) Device manager, disable it there under graphics adapters.

Some of the 8800s run DirectX 9

possibly jumpers

by shporang - 4/15/09 7:28 PM In reply to: upgrading from graphics adapter on motherboard to card by mobkins

Another way you may have to do it is by locating a jumper on the motherboard and changing the pin connection...I doubt it will be this way because it has been a while since I last saw a motherboard needing jumpers changed to disable/enable something. If you have to do anything at all it will most likely be in the bios.
