What happened to music.download.com? When I clicked on the link to go to that site I was directed to a British music service called last.fm. Is Download.com's music server no longer available?
So it appears that music.download.com was folded into last.fm
So that's why they didn't respond to my questions about why the updates for my artist profile was three months over due.
They could at least have told the artists about this move.
Pretty unprofessional, if you ask me ![]()
Yeah, there's nothing on download.com about it and it just happened. What about all the music/stats and fan comments? All gone. Not a great way of doing things.
that was the only service opening us up to new artists with free music, leading us search and buy more. epitonic.com was another which, although folded, stays open to this day for all to explore and download for free. why couldnt downlaod.com/music do the same? eh???
I discover so many great artist now what do i do? ![]()
Although I did love the music server that download.com provided (and like you, I do miss listening to new artists) last.fm is not a bad web site to listen to a lot of free music. You can get some free mp3 downloads there and you can type your favorite bands in the search bar and listen to their top tracks for free as well. I like this service enough that I have signed up and created an account with them. If your a member you can create your own music library there with your favorite bands. So maybe give it a try and tell me what you think. Good luck. ritchie58...
It makes me so mad to hear someone say "last.fm is not a bad website".
Last.fm is so poorly managed, so poorly categorized, so poorly advertised: It makes me want to puke, sob, commit suicide.
Finding free mp3s on that site is a treasure hunt, and all the featured artists are mainstream. What happened to pick of the day? What happened to sampling audio streams? Where did all the genres go?
And have you seen some of the artists' discography listings? It's a complete mess. Track names are literally repeated as different tracks for pages and pages.
And The image gallery engine was done so poorly. I could go on and on, but I got the main problems about last.fm out in the open.
Please reconsider your opinion of Last.fm, I beg of you.
I understand your views, totally. I am a music publicist and our bands really appreciated the candid reviews from fans and editors alike.
Our bands are now migrated to LastFM, but it has some bad issues with pages loading correctly and some band profiles have a different bands music up, etc.
It's just sad really. There are some great free places left though. Sorry I can't link you to them here. You will just have to find The CrybKeeper on social networks. I am everywhere.
Hi Michael,
Thanks for writing in. I really didn’t know much about music.download.com site and its transition to http://www.last.fm/.
Here is the note sent to the artists using music.download.com when the transition was in progress:
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-12543_102-0.html?messageID=2984316#2984316
I only found out this transition a few day before it all happened. CBS Interactive has a lot of divisions and it’s pretty difficult to keep up with all that is happening with each individual sites that we have. So I’m sorry if I don’t have the necessary information to give you on this transition as I was not part of that decision at all.
However, what I would like to say is, thank you for being such a loyal CNET member, your contribution to the CNET forums and the efforts that you put behind in promoting what was music.download.com is truly appreciated. It’s member like you who make a difference in our community and our site.
I hope the information (or lack information) helps a bit. I do apologize for not have more information.
Best regards,
-Lee

Mr. Lee Koo,
I am Funkid7. Please, take a serious look into what I am writing to you about. You featured one of my forum topics in your newsletter, a few years ago.
What did you do with our Music Downloads.com website?
I am a music publicist and under the Alais funkid7, Have brought literally thousands of bands and listeners alike, to your very well hidden, music site. I created a Cnet music banner, years back and linked Cnet, to my MySpace pages and dozens of other social networks. Not sure if you have your own PR and promotions people, but can most certainly assure you, I helped make your music site grow,....at least a small part. I remember e-mailing my bands and watching them sign up and upload there bio's and MP3's. We loved the place! And, I can tell you from the messages I get, we are going to miss the old site.
It took me alot of time, research, networking and patience, to get the major label bands to use Cnet MusicDownloads.com. I know who has the copyright permissions for these artists and knew just how to make it all happen.
Please, if you have the time, can I find out, exactly what went down? Did you merge, sell-out to FM,...what? Can I still get some of the old features back? Reviews, uploads, downloads?
Thank you for taking time out from your schedule, for my minor rant. Also, thank you for Cnet in general, one of the most helpful tech sites on the net and in my opinion, an Internet legend.
Sincerely wondering,
Funkid7, CrybKeeper
Altrough it has been some time between today and the closure day, I'm reopening this topic in search of good, still active alternatives to Download Music.
What I liked about it was a wide selection of free music - is tehre any simillar service?
I have a few alternate places.
This one was started up by a friend of ours at The Cryb. It's called True Anthem and not only do the bands give away their entire albums, once you sign up, they are also fitted with a suggested sponsor, so when you download their FREE MP3's they still make money from their sponsor. The Cryb endorses True Anthem, the MOST INNOVATIVE music site to date. Sponsors include, The Gap, Playboy and Sabian Symbols, Down side: Each track has a limited commercial attached.

Band in our rossiter 'Shaolin Temple Of Boom' on page three.

Here is a site that is most similar to MusicDownloads. It's called Mixposure. Again, many sites like this require you register, to get to the FREE music.

Another way: My Space bands, you are friends with, will offer free downloads periodically. Hit or miss, the more you stay tuned, the more you can catch from the artists.
Thanx for the info on these music web sites funkid7! I'm definitely going to check 'em out. I truly do miss listening to new artists so I appreciate the feedback. I got some flack from some other folks when I suggested last.fm to ya. They were right, last.fm does not cater to up and coming artists. Mainly commercial, mainstream bands are their bread & butter and very few free mp3 downloads are offered. My intentions were sincere (however misguided) as to suggesting this as a alternate online music source. My apologies to you funkid7. Sincerely, ritchie58
No apology necessary Ritchie. I have been messing about at LastFM and it's got some nice features. It's definitely corporate fad cloning, but I am seeing alot more unsigned, indie artists coming on board. If there is enough interest, and CBS shows interest in their listeners, the site could evolve, into what the fans are asking for.
I found a very good friend over at LastFM and downloaded his free tracks from there. The tracks were game music for a free online game in development.
If you can upload your game music, LastFM is making some headway.
Sorry for this bump, but needed to add this.
Been over at TrueAnthem and the features have changed a bit. If you want that free music, sign up and click directly in the view screen of a selected bands music widget/player
A pop out will appear with your free tracks. Put them in your shopping cart and then download. Some are FREE, some cost some small change. Only 120 bands their. It's just not growing very quick, because of sponsors and screening the artists. If Brad doesn't like you, guess you may not get your band uploaded.
