Managing Passwords is easy with Password Safe

by mldenniscn - 3/17/09 10:40 AM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

You can get it from sourceforge.net.

I also use RoboForm but I recommend Password Safe to my users that don't have near as many passwords to remember.

Don't bother

by stroiney - 3/17/09 1:10 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Forget passwords. Use something created on the fly, like dWER345@d. Then when you want to log on, go straight to the "Forgot my password" button, let them send it to you, and copy and paste it in. if you like, you can save their email in a passwords folder and copy it before you go to the site to log in.

remembering passwords

Hello all from Copenhagen Denmark, nice reading about passwords, but there is a small program called "Roboform". It's a nice easy to use program that can keep all passwords, it's great once in use.

manaqge my passwords

by hitsch_e - 3/18/09 11:24 AM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

i'm sorry, but i believe, that using any computer program that keeps your passwords in your computers defeats the purpose of using passwords :

if a hacker gets into your computer, they probably pre hacked all major password utilities.

i use a very simple and very effective password registry; i bought an old fashioned address book and keep track of my passwords in alphabetical order.

it has worked for me for over 6 years without any problems and has survived 2 complete hard drive seizures.

sometimes an old fashioned pencil w/eraser is still safer, cheaper, and far more efficient.

Password Tips

Seriously... a paper address book?!? A serious hackers dream, ever heard of social engineering?

Aside from the possibility of having someone hack your PC / PDA based password utility database CHANGE your passwords on some routine schedule (weekly, monthly... whatever makes you feel comfortable with the level of exposure).

I personally have a password algorithm that has worked well for me.

Don't trust the software, use a high tech #2 pencil

by cmhenkel - 4/11/09 8:08 AM In reply to: manaqge my passwords by hitsch_e

I don't trust the password software for many obvious reasons. I record my p/w in a little address book, in PENCIL, so they're arranged alphabetically along with the websites and can be easily changed. I have my own personal encryption, in case the book should be lost. i.e. "Dog+IL" Would be the name of my dog using a capital first plus the number of the house I lived in in Illinois. Good luck!

Password Manager

by Neal Gaskin - 3/19/09 1:41 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I use the Password manager included in Norton 360. It requires one password to start it and from that point on it remembers and automatically inputs any required program or app. It is about 95% effective. It sometimes has an issue with apps that require opening passwords followed by internal passwords. Other than that it is quick and painless.

Remembering all your password... impossible without help

by malimage - 3/19/09 9:35 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Try "Password manager XP" a wonderfull tool, that you can customize at your convenient, to register any kind of information, password, account number, credit card number, etc. Just customize it for the type of information you want to store. Go and have a look and a try it, at: http://www.cp-lab.com
You will have to remember only one password.
It realy worth the price of 30$ for a single license
I think that it is the best "Password Management Software" I have seen. Not complicated and easy to use.

Few solutions are recommended

by widgard - 3/19/09 11:21 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

well, as you are caring that someone who are living with you may get your passwords, I think you may use some software to keep your list which is writing your password to be safe, you may use the one in windows, to make it have an authority with a password, and you may say there is another password again, but you only have to remember this one.
Another solution is that you may store it in your cell phone, or having a flash disk with you, many flash disks in the market have the funcion of key lock, I'm using the one of sandisk. Hope these offer you some help.

I agree with the last reply left !

That is the same way I manage to remember my passwords, make it something simple like the reply said and if it requires numbers then add 1, 2, or 3 as needed, then you can try them and I also try and keep the same password for nearly every site. Those that are secure sites like banking etc, I make obscure, something no one else would ever know like your where your first date was or the name of your first boyfriend/girlfriend and if a numeral is needed then an age!

Passwords.............................

by zobstick2000 - 4/12/09 3:26 AM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Here's what I do..

I have a password protected file that stores all my passwords and is hidden amongst a load of other files. This also allows me to store usernames, software licence numbers, bank details etc.. that relate to the passwords.

Another good thing about this is that, when I log on to my bank, I use copy and paste thus saving keystrokes and detering keyloggers.

Also, I store some PIN on my mobile phone as phone numbers under psudonyms and scrambled in some way.

We can all remember old addresses and phone numbers so I use these and the password reminder questions become easy to answer. I tend not to use my birthday.

Some passwords have a physical pattern on the keyboard e.g. qsefth... check this on your keyboard to see how it works.

Should you need to include a number then choose one that you'll always use e.g.qsefth99

The impoertant thing is to have a system that's easy for you to understand.. and then stick to it

Managing passwords

by Linall9 - 4/17/09 8:45 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have the same problem of keeping passwords, but came up with the idea of having a base password, such as abc9d and then with each site requiring a password, I add various letters/numbers onto that base password. For instance, for one site I might have abc9d*k* and another might be abc9dcit. I keep a list on my computer but I don't put the base password. For that first site, I would put the name of the site and then the password *k* , for the second I would have name and the password would be cit. Even if someone saw the list, it wouldn't do any good since the base password wouldn't be listed. Just be sure to pick a base password that doesn't mean anything.. no birth dates, anniversary, names. I hope this helps.
