Reccomend me a 16 incher?

by tipoo_ - 4/10/09 7:09 AM

Hey guys, I'm looking for suggestions for a laptop. At first i wanted the Vaio FW series laptop, but its just not cost-effective enough, especially the gimped/customizable Canadian version.

So this is going to sound weird, my first choice is a 16 inch laptop, but failing that i would want a 13 inch (no sissy middle-of-the road 15 inchers for me, haha )

So...How about some suggestions? A price under 1400 (CAD) would be reasonable. If it can handle light gaming, thats a big plus, so no GMA nonsence. I'm not overly concerned about battery life, but something with a longer runtime is obviously preferred. A minimal weight would be great.

Oh yea, and it has to look cool :P

I'm liking what i'm seeing of the Studio XPS 16, what do you guys think?

Have you looked at the Acer?

I know there 18.4 machine gets more power for the dollar when compared to HP and Sony.

Too big...

I'll be hauling the thing from class to class, so i think an 18 or even 17 incher would be a bit much.

Well the Acer 16"

laptop weighs 7.5 pounds and the 18.4 weighs 9 pounds. If weight is the biggest consideration you should go less then 15.0 screen size.

Hp

You should look at the Hp G60t possibly? I know you can get 'em for about 450 USD without upgrades right now. You can always customize it too if you need to. There's also the dv6t and the HDX 16t, if you want to go for more money. Hp's pretty reliable from what I know.

BTW

I'm also looking for these sizes. 15.4's getting old in my opinion. I want either a 16 inch or a 14. Lenovo's having a sale right now too. If you'll be carrying it around all day, you might not want a huge laptop, however if you get a big one for a good price, you could also get a netbook.

16 inchers

by tipoo_ - 4/10/09 9:43 AM In reply to: BTW by SVTracer

Are 16 inchers that much heavier than 15 inchers, to the point where i wouldn't want to carry it from class to class?

Post 9 of 23

It depends

by SVTracer - 4/10/09 9:56 AM In reply to: 16 inchers by tipoo_

Well, they're generally over 6 lbs, so It depends on what you consider heavy. I carried my 15.4 once, and it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't the best thing it ways 5.6 lbs. My question is if you really need the 16 inch screen, and if you have the room for it. I like big screens too, but I don't need one.

Well...

by tipoo_ - 4/10/09 9:59 AM In reply to: It depends by SVTracer

I dont NEED one, per se, but it would be nice. And since its 16:9 instead of 16:10 the overall footprint shouldn't be too much larger, right?

This is where I'm stuck.

by SVTracer - 4/10/09 10:15 AM In reply to: Well... by tipoo_

If you'd have it on you at all times, a smaller one would be better, but if you set it down a lot, it wouldn't be so bad. When I carried mine, I only used it in one class, so I was carrying it for four hours. I like strength, because I break most of my electronics. The reason I'm looking at Lenovo is because many of their laptops recently passed light military testing, which is a plus for me.

See, if I got a bigger one for the same price as a smaller one, it might be more flexible and not last as long, though the big screen is tempting because I like to watch movies on my laptop.

Lenovo...

by tipoo_ - 4/10/09 10:58 AM In reply to: Edit: by SVTracer

The only lenovo i would be interested in (the Ideapad U series) doesn't seem to be listed on the Canadian site.

The thinkpads are all too boring looking, i know Lenovo is supposed to be one of the most reliable but i dont want a laptop that makes me sleepy looking at it ;-)

Liking the Dell Studio XPS 16

by DannyKhuu - 4/10/09 11:15 PM In reply to: Reccomend me a 16 incher? by tipoo_

I recently bought a Dell Studio XPS 16 three weeks ago and it has met my expectations. I got a free blu-ray player for buying it retail at Best Buy and the priced ended up to come around $1200, so it wasn't that bad. The battery life does disappoint but that's not much of an issue for me. It's also glossy on the wrist rest and also on part of the front. The Display is nice though and bright. I haven't played any games on it yet but I heard it's suppose to be "okay" when it comes to that. And it also comes with blue tooth even though it says it doesn't have it on the Best Buy website. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with my Dell.
