I had to reload XP Pro on my Dimension 4400. The installation worked fine and Windows ran fine even after installing numerous updates - until I installed SP2. Then the system froze. When I tried re-booting, it would go to the options screen - load normal, safe mode etc. If I selected normal, it would try to load then crash, then try to reload then crash - continuously. If would only load in safe mode.
Microsoft registration and license verification all worked fine.
I then tried to load a version of XP that included SP2. The system immediately froze up.
Unfortunately, I was not able to back up any of the installed drivers beforehand and I do not have the original CD's. Dell said they no longer had any original CD's available.
I downloaded and installed drivers from Dell website using my service tag number. System responded the same as before.
I think I need a copy of a complete set of drivers from a Dimension 4400 that is currently running properly with SP2 installed.
Please help.
bccgm,
A few questions for you:
1) Did you install SP1 or SP1a prior to the SP2 installation attempt?
2) What site are you using to install SP2?
3) Are you using 32 or 64-bit XP Pro?
I cured this problem by fitting a new Hard drive, Loaded Windows XP and the SP2 from Microsoft, additional drivers were obtained from Dell site.
No further problems experienced.
Asking Dell for help was a waste of time they just want you to dial thier very expensive help line.
Hope this solution helps someone.
