1h 45min of light use i.e. surfing/word processing etc. considerably less w/ intensive graphics like movies
I'm running an HP Pavillion dv4207ea about 3yrs old with the original 6-cell 4.4Ah Li-ion battery
I own a Dell XPS M1730, acquired brand-new from Dell in late August of 2008. It has a Core2 Duo 2.6 Ghz CPU, dual nVidia 8800M GTX GPUs in SLi mode, PhysX processor, dual 320 GB SATA-II hard drives, bluetooth, Logitec aux LCD, etc. Basically everything Dell offered as an option, minus the Core 2 Extreme CPU. I had Dell send me the x64 version of Vista Ultimate and I am dual booting Ubuntu LTS Desktop Edition.
Basic computing (email, web browsing, MS Office apps) allows me about 1 hour and 15 minutes in power-saving mode. Performance mode shortens battery use time by only about 10 minutes. I usually leave it in performance mode. Looking at a dim screen is not worth the small extension of battery use time.
I am a gamer and this machine performs extremely well. It's also a magnificently great looking machine. I am actually impressed that the battery last even a few minutes beyond an hour, considering the amount of hardware drawing on it.
It is insanely expensive, ridiculously heavy (just the 250W AC adapter weighs as much as many notebooks) and would be a complete waste of money for the average power user. If you're a gamer, this is your only option other than the top tier Alienware or Eurocom offerings.
I think I set the shortest battery life record on Cnet. My battery life is about 5 minutes with 1 lith-ion battery and 10 minutes with 2 lith-ion batteries. By the looks of it, the laptop was made in the year 2000 and was originally designed for Windows 98 SE.
Sounds like your battery (and the second battery) are worn out. Chances are, a new replacement will cost as much as the unit is worth, if a new replacement is available. I used to have a C600. It was a very reliable workhorse. It did originally come with 98SE and my employer upgraded it to 2K. Very slow by today's standards... I think it was like a P3-600 CPU with 512 MB of memory.
My year old Dell XPS M1530 gets about an hour on the battery. It has been charged and discharged almost every day since it was new.

Acer aspire one(8.9") A150 = 1.5 - 2.3 hours (depending on if wireless in on)
Macbook 13.3" 2.4 ghz (late 2008) = 4 - 5 hours (depending on wireless)
Toshiba X205-SLI1 (17" gaming rig) 40 - 50 minutes max
Aspire one = 3 cell Lithium Ion
macbook = not quite sure of the cells, but it is Lithium Ion
X205-SLI1 = 9 cell Lithium Ion
Sager NP5710
8-cell Smart Lithium Ion Battery
2nd Smart Lithium Ion Battery for Flex Bay
I get 2 hours compared to 4 hours with both batteries when it was new.
Acer 9810
20" screen
I don't attempt to use without power but I estimate a hour.
It's a brand new battery and it's not long enough. Having to lug this beast onto airplanes, I hardly ever drag it out because by the time it boots up, there isn't enough battery left to do real work.
that gets between 1 and 2. It has an 8 cell lithium ion battery. It has to power a 20.1" screen. I also have a Sager 5710 that has 8 cell lithium battery and has a removable Secondary Smart Li-ION Battery that pops in and out to replace the CD/DVD drive and got over 4 hours when new. It's over 4 years and now get barely over 2 hours.
