INSPIRON 1000

by Sherry719 - 3/20/09 6:49 PM

I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 WindowsXP SP2 and it's about 5 years old. I haven't been able to use it in six months because I can't keep it connected, and when it is, the fan noise is loud, it gets very hot, it's running slower than molasses and it shuts itself off in 30 minutes on AC power. I can't run any virus scans or anything else because of that reason. What should I do?

So why not fix it?

Are you the do it yourself type? Why not clean it up and replace the failing fans?

FIXING IT

I'd love to but I don't know how. When it comes to the technical part I'm all thumbs. I know if I take it to Best Buy or somewhere else for repair I could probably buy another laptop cheaper than what they would charge me. I guess I am looking for some quick fixes.

The quick fix is to replace the bad fan.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1000/ is where we start for the documentation.

I see they didn't create the service manual so you would have to use other models to guide you on how to open it up and call Dell to ask what parts you can order to replace the fan.

For example ONLY (not your fan) the HP fan runs about 15 bucks at http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=434746-001&cat=FAN

Seems a shame to part with hundreds of bucks over a 20 buck part that needs replacement.

Have screwdrivers become a technical tool?

Not too technical

Okay, okay I know I sound whimpy but my point is I don't want to go into my laptop and start poking around the wrong things. I will call Dell about the fan and go from there. Many thanks for your help. And I do own a couple screwdrivers.

At least we are not talking about scapels.

Now that's where I start to call it technical and dangerous.

Once we peel back the layers of what needs to be replaced and once we have the part in hand then we go get the screwdrivers and remind ourselves not to get too hurried and set aside the time to concentrate on the task.

Good luck!

http://www.fonerbooks.com/workbook.htm is nice enough. Watch the video and click on the links on the left to see if you want to see if you can bring yourself to order the fan and replace it.
