by leploop - 6/28/09 2:27 AM In reply to: IE8 by jancawa55

Hi,
I installed ie8 from windows update.
I'm running Vista Home Premium.
It has never worked!! Does anybody know if there is a reason for this?
I have also now changed my default to chrome.
Peace and Love to all.

It's better than previous versions, but alternative browsers

by Issaland - 6/21/09 1:12 PM In reply to: IE 8 ??? by diablowizard

are much better and safer (Firefox, Opera).

IE8 on my Vista Premium Home SP2 isn't performing perfect. Is opening slowly, stopping working sometimes, but recovers very fast.
If you must use this browser, install IE7 Pro (it's blocking most of ads, has mouse gestures, noticeably speed up browsing) and WOT (Web Of Trust) add-on, which gives websites reputation and blocking dangerous ones.
If you run IE on new machine it doesn't really matter, but if your computer remembers Windows XP than better choice will be Opera (especially Opera 10 Beta). Opera is faster on old machines than Firefox.

I downloaded and had problems with it crashing often and it was slow. Then I saw a fix on Microsoft site which was very simple it was to go to Internet options> click on the advanced tab> click on reset where it says "reset Internet Explorer settings" and now it's working great. No more crashes and it's faster than IE7

I downloaded IE8 first without checking here b/c yahoo recommended it...big mistake. I was able to uninstall it and go back to IE7 and then I downloaded SP3 for XP and I am not sure about SP3, however IE7 works better and faster...I am still not sure about SP3 tho, but that is another issue. Do not install IE8 it does not work as well. Andrew

Internet Explorer 8

by ec_sincity - 3/20/09 7:11 PM In reply to: What's your opinion on Internet Explorer 8? by mopscare42

I too am keen to see what it's like , and although it promises changes for the better I am always a little apprehensive when changing from something I am used to.
Having said that I'm going to download it and give it a whirl.I don't know if it will have an uninstall/rollback feature but to make sure I'm covered when I upgrade something like this I make sure I have an image of my OS drive , should things go wrong .

My posting here won't be seen as particularly helpful , but in any situation like this it's very handy to make sure you can set things back as they were.

I use Acronis True Image to back up my operating system drive , though there are many other competent programs out there that do the same thing.

If nothing else , I hope this helps eradicate anyones fear of changing things they are unsure of.

What's your opinion on Internet Explorer 8?

by huizhe2 - 3/20/09 7:24 PM In reply to: What's your opinion on Internet Explorer 8? by mopscare42

I downloaded it a few days ago and replaced IE8beta. It seems much better than IE7, but it's still slower than Google Chrome, which is my current default browser. I used to use Firefox (I have FF3.2beta installed as well) exclusively, but it's too slow for me, and most of the add-ons I used to use are either incompatible with FF3.2beta or else I no longer need them. The most important add-on, though, is now available for IE: Foxmarks. That's a lifesaver.

Sometimes IE is the only browser that works well enough here in Taiwan. While a few people here do use Macs and even fewer use Linux for desktops and laptops, almost everyone here is bound to Microsoft Office and Windows Chinese (Zh-TW--Big5). Me too. It's strictly a matter of necessity and price, not of OS ideology: one uses whatever everyone else uses, what one's employer provides, what one is familiar with, or what one needs to do one's daily business.

One thing that annoys me about IE, and about almost every Microsoft Website that I visit, is that I almost always get the page in Chinese because I live in Taiwan. There is no easy way to switch to English, even though my system is English. I need to be able to see and read both Chinese and Japanese so that I can go to Google translate (better than Babelfish, IMHO) and have it turned into English if I can't read it without a translation. Microsoft isn't the only source of default Chinese pages, though, so this is a general complaint to all Web-page developers: Do not assume that the language of the user is the same as the official language of the country in which the user is connecting to the Net! Add a button that allows the user to have the page in the user's language of choice!

Don't do it!!

by micker377 - 3/20/09 10:53 PM In reply to: What's your opinion on Internet Explorer 8? by mopscare42

XP SP3 Installed IE8. Slowed down everything (even FF!). Uninstalled 8 (rolled back to 7), now 7 won't work! System restore didn't help. Reinstalled 7 from the original download, did all the updates (from the install program). No joy!!! The reason I mentioned that I updated from the install, is that MS update doesn't work either! Both IE, and update come up for a secomd, and then back to the desktop. Waiting for two days for a response from MS. Maybe this is their way to get rid of XP!

IE 8 problem

by maggiea43 - 3/27/09 4:33 PM In reply to: Don't do it!! by micker377

I tried IE8, and had to uninstall it. Went back to IE 7, but IE 7 wouldn't work. So, I was going to go back to IE 6. Well I couldn't get rid of IE 7 because of SP 3. So I had to get rid of SP 3 to be able to roll back IE 7 to IE 6. Well actually IE 6 was working better than 7 or 8. But I went ahead and reinstalled IE 7 and SP 3, and now everything is back to normal. I think I should learn to leave well enough alone !! Maggie

It will be a while...

Last week we got a tech notice from MS for our webmaster to run a series of tests and gave us links to fixes for IE8.

MS is well aware that a lot of sites will not be compatible without modification.

How long do you think it will take to modify 2 billion websites?

For a pretty good rundown on IE8 go here:
http://www.winsupersite.com/

I have installed it (XP SP3) and it works fine and so far seems to be faster and better than before. Firefox has been my main browser for over two years, but it is much slower starting up (even without being bogged with many add-ons) and no faster browsing around than IE8. For the last week, though, I've been using Chrome, and it is noticeably faster at everything and uses less memory than FF or IE8.

Nevertheless, my install and trial of IE8 has gone well.

Two problems so far

by gemma_one - 3/21/09 9:09 AM In reply to: IE8 by timwerx

I have installed IE 8 on one of my Vista quad machines. I'm running Qwest MSN Mail, which functions through IE. I have found two problems so far. I can not open attachments in emails using the Qwest email program (might be related to their new security in IE 8). However, I can open them if I go into the program using IE 8. I have also noted that my Facebook page is not presented properly, have overlaps of pictures and information. Only have had the upgrade to IE 8 installed for 2 days and still trying to figure these problem out, and see what others exist. If I can not resolve, I will revert back to old IE.
