If you are considering a Dell laptop purchase read this...

by billbris1 - 3/19/09 6:20 PM

Like many people, I decided it was time for a new laptop. And also, like many people, I immediately went to Dell.com to "build" my own the way I wanted it. Once I was satisfied with my choice and the price, I pressed submit. That was the last time I was satisfied with Dell.

I started a discussion on the Dell forum for "Small Business Network" that details my travails. I simply laid out what happened, and was happening to my order. Suffice it say that Dell not only has/had manufacturing issues (my order was delayed), but it now seems that Dell has a corporate policy of stonewalling their customers who have issues. It reminds me of the castle lord having boiling oil dumped on the heads of the rampaging, unhappy peasants trying to get into the castle.

What was most amazing was the number of others who were seeking comfort in knowing that they were not alone in their issues with Dell. We all received similar corporate script readers telling us that we made a great choice in picking such a popular product (the reason for the delays), but there's nothing anyone can do.

I even had my order canceled by Dell after telling them not to do so (twice!). When I asked them to reverse their error, they all replied with the robotic drone of "there's nothing we can do", you must simply re-order your computer and get back in line.

I eventually decided that there was something I could do, and voted with my feet and my dollars, going elsewhere.

It's a shame. Dell makes a pretty good product, if you can get it. What is most annoying is the corporate policy of no longer being helpful (even when they make the mistake), but simply to be robotic and casually taking the losses that come with it.

A good company that no longer cares about their customers, is no longer a good company, and in fact my eventually no longer be a company at all.

If you are interested in the details you can read about it at:http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19262871/19450820.aspx#19450820

Sorry you've had problems. I've bought seven, and each has been just fine.

I have had 4 and have had no problems with Dell, either on the purchase end or support.

Last support call was about a problematic stick of Ram. I had already run tests, using industry recognized utility software that indicated that the ram was bad.

It is a habit with me whenever I call for support or business on anything, I will write down the time when starting to dial [in a file on the server]. I got ahold of a support person in Canada, explained the symptoms and what I had done, let him direct me to do some things and the conclusion was that he needed to send me a new stick of ram. While entering the data and my e-mail addy, he asked me what it meant. We spent the rest of the time on the call discussing Landscaping and other small talk.

Time on call from my records - 12 min 38 seconds.

Stick of memory from Dallas to Pac NW showed up next day around 3pm.

But that is how much of my calls go with others.

BTW - I have made it a habit to go with Latitudes, after I have done a Google search for reviews of the model I am considering.

I did have a bad call with an HP box and tech support wanted me to box it up and send it to them at my cost [est 26 bucks] over a bad combo modem/sound card. They did not understand the concept that if I were to bundle and rebox and drive to the Post Office, it was closer to take it back to Costco. Since I had already spent time removing the crapware and configuring it to my needs, I just went to Fry's and bought a cheapo modem [for backup] and a cheapo sound card for a total whopping cost of 16 bucks.

Sorry you had such an unpleasant experience.

im on my 4th dell and have had some problems, but they have been resolved quickly except for the last problem. i was quite disappointed with the hoops they made me jump through, and miscommunication on their side, but it was fulfilled so i hope it solved the problem
