Computer is very slow to respond to any commands

by Gramby - 3/14/09 8:52 AM

I have a Dell Dimension 4100 upgraded from Windows ME to XP. It worked great. My paid antivirus & firewall (PCSecurityShield) ran out so I installed the free AVG and ZoneAlarm from your download site. I had much trouble uninstalling the PC Security products. (Not sure if they are completely gone yet). My computer responds so slowly now that I can leave the room for quite a while before it does what I ask.
I have tried everything I know to do, which isn't much. PLEASE HELP!

Specs? Processor, speed and RAM

Also, what's running at startup? ME to XP is a big jump in hardware requirements for reasonable performance.

It's a Dell Dimension 4100 with Intel Pentium III Processor 930MHz
512 MB of Ram. In Sept. we added 256 MB memory when we got a new driver for the Monitor. The PC Security Shield Antivirus and Firewall worked fine for over a year, but I wanted to use free protection if it will work as well. I had trouble installing the PC programs at first and then had trouble uninstalling them. (Not sure if I got it all yet.) I do updating on my Spybot Search and Destroy and my Lavasoft Ad-Aware weekly, as well as Microsoft Windows (I have Internet Explorer 7)and I do disc cleaning and defragging. I have RegCure 1.5 for my registry cleaner and I try really hard to keep all extra stuff off my computer. But I am afraid I will have to take off AVG 8.5 and ZoneAlarm 's firewall and go back to the paid security if you can't help me.

Uninstalled AVG & Ad-Aware (which had become corrupted) with help of Revo Uninstaller... everything runs smoothly again. (This is posted for those novices like me.)
