Password Management

by dlevin - 3/13/09 7:19 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

eWallet. I have it on my desktop and my iPhone. It has all of my IDs and passwords, credit cards, etc. at my fingertips, encrypted. Within the password folder I have subfolders of "A sites", "B sites", and so on. This way I can locate the user name and password easily. The password can then be copy-pasted into the log-on screen.

RoboForm

by chalmerp - 3/13/09 7:25 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

RoboForm... It's been working flawlessly for me for ages. I started using it at home, and it worked so well I purchased a licence for work applications, too. I had to visit many, many sites with my company's procurement card. I probably have hundreds of passwords stored.
It's well worth the small cost to licence the paid version. It's fully supported and regularly updated.

Manage my passwords

by w9smith - 3/13/09 7:33 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi,
I have the same problem. I wanted a way to manage my website logons, ATM info, and non-computer security info. And I wanted it very secure and portable. I have been using PASSWORD SAFE for years.
- FREE
- highly encrypted and unbreakable. In case I lose the thumbdrive.
- runs on computer or thumbdrive or floppy disk
- unlimited entries
- a form free note area for each entry. I use this for notes about the entry; like the security question and answer they ask for.
http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/

A slightly more modern, but similar program, is XZIZO. It costs $10
for the unlimited version.
http://www.xizzo.com/

I really like both and can recommend either.

manage them in plain site

by feeshdr - 3/13/09 7:37 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I keep all my passwords in a document called "Charles' Reports" within a file called "Monthly Records" under the overall file called "Tutoring" (I really am a tutor). The critical document opens with a page of boring commentary on how "Charles" is progressing. On the second page is the actual list of passwords, user IDs, and secret answers to security questions. I think it's pretty safe. I keep a printed copy in case the computer crashes.

Excel

by RowanCUK - 3/13/09 7:41 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I myself keep an Excel document with all passwords and have a long complicated password locking it (13 characters, some none standard)! That way I only have to remember one password and it unlocks all my others (though firefox keeps most safe for me anyway, some places like banks it doesn't save)
The advantage of this is that I can have unique passwords for each sensitive site, which is more secure than the 'desdamona' suggestion above as anyone seeing me enter one password will not be able to extrapolate any others.
Certain sites(such as for some fora) I use a bog standard password to so I am not forever looking up passwords for places I go to regularly.

My youngest daughter is the only person to know the password to the passwords (as my husband seems unable to remember it!) but she knows not to use it unless in an emergency. It is always a good idea to have someone know the key to your passwords...just in case!

ROBOTFORM

by jaxon4u - 3/13/09 7:42 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Fantastic product. In addition to managing passwords, use the program to fill in forms whether the data is confidential (like credit cards) or not and store miscellaneous confidential information in "Safenotes". Robotform is exceptionally well designed and easy to use from a toolbar. Based on many reviews I've read it provides a very high level of security. This is a "no brainer" selection.

PREFIX it baby!

by deltoncbaker - 3/13/09 7:51 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I am hesitant to tell my secret, because it could make me vulnerable.
I created an formula for making passwords. The formula is set PREFIX that is followed the an abbreviation of the web site. The PREFIX includes all the things you need to be safe. For example:
This would be your password for CNET
TWO Capitol letters QW
TWO lower case letters qw
TWO numbers 12
TWO Special Characters !@
Abbreviation CNET
QWqw12!@CNET
This would be your password for Best BUY
QWqw12!@BB
That is what I do, I still forget Passwords but it is less often now.

PINS

by victorus - 3/13/09 8:19 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I can't believe that no one has suggested PINS. It's free, Open Source available, and it works as a TSR program when running to auto fill forms in web pages AND applications that can be pass worded. The best part, it is extremely small and portable. See http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/pins.html .

I use Keywallet

by iconoclastt - 3/13/09 8:37 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi, has anyone used an old program called "Keywallet"?
I have used it for years. You drag its setup icon to the username
window at a website and it tracks your login, you then save it, and a list is started. you can link the website for each U.N./Password combination. then, you merely click on the "world Icon" and when the website appears, you drag and drop the website name into the first box and you are soon at the start page of your desired site. It is encryped. These guys are not American and the instructions were a little tricky to understand, but i have really enjoyed the convenience once i learned to use Keywallet.

At wit's end?

by beachbum58 - 3/13/09 8:55 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Surely you jest. It baffles me to think that somebody can't handle managing passwords. I'll agree that it can be annoying, but not much more than that. What's the world coming to?

Passwords

by CJ Neal - 3/13/09 9:06 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

You could try what I do and maybe this will work for you. I have picked a word that can be changed to suit the requirements of the different sites... example: Cottonwood- now if I need numbers I would do C00tonw00d ( I changed all the o's to zeros) This has really helped me keep track of all of the different ways. If it has to be shorter- just do cotton or the variation of it. To lenghten it you could do cottonwood15, just pick a number that is easy to remember, like your day of birth... hope this helps!
