VoiceOver is on-demand

by palitoinkaru - 3/11/09 10:05 PM In reply to: New iPod Shuffle = FAIL. by robstak

The VoiceOver feature happens only when you hold the button, so it's only when you request it. I agree that the previous Shuffle was small enough and that it sucks to be limited to crappy iPod earbuds.

Post 18 of 37

They said that about the original shuffle.

by aMUSICsite - 3/12/09 5:31 AM In reply to: New iPod Shuffle = FAIL. by robstak

Some people just can't cope with change can they?

I seem to remember people saying the first shuffle was going to fail, was over priced and a silly idea. Then again I think Apple sold millions of them.

There seems to be a growing number of people willing to jump on anything Apple does and slag it off before finding out the facts, like of corse you can turn off the talking, soon there will be 3rd party headphones and if you could loose this you could loose any of the shuffles.

I bet the sell millions and also Apple will set the standard for built in controls in headphones, which will eventually be rolled out on all iPods and most 3rd party hardware and headphones.

new Shuffle = yawn

by Fe1d - 3/13/09 10:24 AM In reply to: New iPod Shuffle = FAIL. by robstak

A USB thumb drive with a headphone jack and controls on the cable is 2004 tech. IMHO, Apple should have made a shuffle that attaches to headphones and rolls up leftover wire, with a built-in Uhura earbud that works when no headphones are attached. Essentially makes any headphones a wireless iPod, no Bluetooth required.

At half the price.

god not another proprietary headset to by

Products looks good but now all my good headsets won't work on this thing. Just what I need.

Outrageous

by Nicholas Buenk - 3/15/09 10:19 PM In reply to: New iPod Shuffle = FAIL. by robstak

I don't mind the idea of putting the controls in the headphone. All Apple iPod headphones already have controls on the headphones, this cuts down on clutter of needless buttons and is for the one device that is small enough to take advantage of losing buttons. But you can't just flub me off as an Apple fanboy though because I just discovered on the latest BOL that the headphones actually have DRM to force you to use headphones that will be paying a royalty fee to Apple! This just makes me really mad.

I drank the kool-aid and I'm surprised I'm not convulsing

by ktreb - 3/18/09 4:50 PM In reply to: New iPod Shuffle = FAIL. by robstak

Yes, I actually bought the new Shuffle. I went to the Apple store the other day just wanting to try it out and expecting to hate it. And even with the crapbuds, I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. And I ended up liking the VoiceOver feature to navigate playlists. So, I shelled out the dough and bought it. I'm starting to run again, so I plan on using it on my runs. Still don't like the proprietary earbud/authentication chip thing, but I bought it so I will get over it. And if they do come out with an attachment so you can use other earbuds, I am hoping they will probably work (fingers crossed) with the 2nd gen Touch.

And before any of you tell me I've wasted my money, I can get a cheaper player for the same capacity with a screen, yada, yada, yada...you're preaching to the choir. I now own 18 mp3 players including the previous 2 generations of Shuffles, a couple of Sonys, 3 SanDisk Sansa Clips, a Creative Zen Stone and V Plus, and 2 generations of iPod Touches. I bought the new Shuffle because I can.

And this new iPod is practically the iPod Invisa. I bought the black one and it was sitting on my keyboard for a day and nobody realized it was there!

So, it's a security feature!

They should play up that it's a "stealth" upgrade :)

ktreb's revenge he...he...

by ktreb - 3/19/09 11:30 AM In reply to: So, it's a security feature! by DangMI

I was also thinking along the lines that if anyone ever mugged me for it (or stole it from me some other way), my revenge would be that they wouldn't know how to use it. They won't have the data/charging cable for it so they would be stuck with my music on it (my tastes range from classical to polka to metal to '80s hair bands). They would use their own earbuds (after throwing away my earwax-infused pair) and have no way of controlling volume and skipping tracks.

Or they may not even take it from me at all. They will take one look at it and say *** is this??? and take my crappy old cell phone instead (I didn't drink the iPhone kool-aid). Genius.

(NT) LOL--no, really did!

Stop buying so many MP3 players.

by isting - 3/19/09 11:43 AM In reply to: I drank the kool-aid and I'm surprised I'm not convulsing by ktreb

If you can afford to buy a new mp3 player every other month, then you should be able to spend a few extra dollars for an iPod Nano. I think the Nano is worth the extra money. I will never buy an mp3 player without a screen.

All of this outrage about the Shuffle is over blown. It's a niche device.

Post 27 of 37

I actually do have a Nano

by ktreb - 3/19/09 2:07 PM In reply to: Stop buying so many MP3 players. by isting

2nd generation

Post 28 of 37

I also have a Nano.

by isting - 3/19/09 2:17 PM In reply to: I actually do have a Nano by ktreb

My Nano works great for me at the gym and anywhere that I run. The size of it does not bother me or makes me wish that I had another smaller device without a screen.

I think most people are getting worked up about something that they aren't even in the market to buy. I generally don't complain about features of products that I don't interest me.

Well

I like the headphone controls, being a button hater. ;)
I could get into a big rant about the authentication chip though. It's one thing to have a headphone control any company can clone. It's an outrage to force them to pay an apple tax with the authentication chip.
