Passwords

by wes_bullis - 3/3/09 1:43 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I almost always have my cell phone/Windows Mobile PDA with me. I use eWallet, an encrypted password manager to store and maintain all my passwords. It allows me to back it up on a storage card and transfer it to a PC, so I can access all my passwords either on my phone or on a PC. I've used it for 3-4 years and found it to be reliable. As best I can tell it is very safe.

Managing Passwords

by TinaBelle - 3/3/09 6:08 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I created a database where I have fields for the site, my username, password, date created and other fields. I update it as needed. I password protect that database. It's very easy for me to open it up when I need to look up a password. I don't exactly know how secure it is. I sent an email to a very trusted person with the password to that database, just in case I forget it or in an emergency someone in my family needs to use it.

Managing passwords

by RatMan - 3/3/09 7:20 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

G'day William,
I have the same problem remembering passwords & I used to write them down & hide them somewhere then forget where, So my solution was to then keep them on a thumb drive partitioned & the password section passworded. The program I use is Stegnose P-Safe, it used to be a free program. I also, in the p-safe partition did a secondary P-safe with a different password to store my banking details. So only 2 passwords to remember & able to cut & paste passwords instead of typing.

Password management

If you have a Mac, I recommend 1Password. It remembers, learns and fills in t fills in the froms when you are on the Log In page! It even creates strong passwords. You can then sync them to your Palm, Treo or iPhone device. When you are away from home you can use your Treo (etc) to look up your log in data.

There is probably a similar program for Windows machines.

My personal preference

by StopSpamming - 3/4/09 11:20 AM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi,

As I had the same problem I searched for a solution and came across this Germany-based company, which has taken care of my needs.

Go take a look at: http://www.password-depot.com/

I have to admit though that I also use the built-in feature of FireFox as I'm too lazy ands can't be bothered to go and load the Depot every time I go on-line and load "low value" pages.

Good luck.

managing passwords

by lovesthebeach - 3/4/09 1:49 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Because I don't know how secure they REALLY are, I am reticent to use an online p/w manager. I use a flash drive with an excel file in it and keep my log-in's, email addresses used (I have more than one), passwords, account numbers, (multiple) secret questions, etc. That way you don't have to worry about someone getting into your computer (if you need to have it repaired, this info in not on your hard drive.) It can then be kept in a drawer, with a lock if need be.

I have memorized over 200 passwords, each is unique!

Here's the trick: Start with a 4-6 digit number you know you'll never forget (eg childhood phone#); now, for each website/etc,. you go to select 2 letters (eg #2 & #4 if your bday is the 24th) & use these as your front end of password; capitalize the 2nd one:

eg. here would be cN12345

If, after a month the site forces you to change passwords, just swap the two letters order, eg here would be nC12345

Use the main identifiuer part of the site URL (eg here "cnet", not "forums" because even though forums comes first, it's a generic label, but "cnet" is the actual owner. . . )

Pick a different 4-6 digit code for anything financial related (ie your online banking, Paypal, etc.) but keep your 2 letter positioning, so as to have less t recall. . .

I have easily over 200 passwords all different that I can recall immediately as needed, & I've also had a major stroke (lost over 20% of active brain tissue!)

$100 shine

by msgale - 3/4/09 7:47 PM In reply to: re: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Cyberpope

There is an old saying that goes somewhat like this "Why put a $100.00 shine on a $10.00 pair of shoes." Why go crazy with passwords to protect nothing. Do I really need a strong password to protect my login to the CNET site, or to read the NYTimes online? Basically I have two account names/passwords. One is for general use and the other is for my financial accounts. Since I can't forget them, I don't have to record anywhere. Can the be cracked using brute force, of course. Last time I tried it took three days to crack my password.

norton internet security

by denboy1964 - 3/5/09 11:44 AM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

norton internet security program has a thing called "identity safe" the first time you use "username" & "password" it asks you if you want to save and it stores in, and then every you log on to the internet, just log-in to "identity safe" and each website's log-in page you go on the username and password fills in automatically.
when you finish surfing you just log-out of identity safe.

Hope this helps.

RoboForm

by Rascal_AZ - 3/5/09 2:34 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've been using the paid version of Roboform for years. It offers a Master Password protection for your security on a shared computer. You can also setup multiple ID's so the other users in your home can store their own passwords. If you want it will generate passwords for you or you can set up your own. Once you've set up a password it's easy to change it. You can store personal information like phone numbers, address, checking, credit card, etc. I use another feature called SafeNotes to store my bank's routing number. The logins page lists all the websites you have setup passwords for and you can use it like a Favorites menu to either go to the page or go to the page and login.

The paid version is a lifetime license that you can transfer to a new computer. It's easy to export your password files to a CD or online storage so you have a backup and not have to start all over again with a new computer. It was great when my computer failed last week and I didn't have to try and remember all the sites I don't use very often or the different passwords. I was able with a few steps to setup Roboform on my new computer.

I have been encountering some problems with some of the new security procedures being used by financial sites. Typically it's the ones that require you to type in your login info on one page, then go to another page for the password. Roboform isn't doing too well in recognizing the fields for those. Pulling up the edit screen does give you access to your login/password information. That's a bit cumbersome, but it's easier than trying to remember the info or where you wrote it down.

Give the free version a try. It's limited in the number of logins you can store, but will give you a free introduction to all of Roboforms features.

Passwords

by winstonh5 - 3/6/09 9:24 AM In reply to: RoboForm by Rascal_AZ

I recommend against using a software program or utility program to put your passwords on your hard drive or any storage of them on someone's network drive. What happens if some hacker gets into your hard drive? What happens when your hard drive crashes. If you use a website to store your backup files and your HD crashes, you lose all your passwords.
I recommend that you put them on a flash drive and remove them from your PC when you are not using it. I carry mine on my key ring with my car keys and I'm in big trouble if I lose that. If you are afraid you will lose your car keys, put the flash drive in a safet place near your pc.
I also keep a current spreadsheet file on the same flash drive with my medical history and all my doctors and medications, etc. I update it every couple of months or whenever I change medications or have a Medical "episode" or visit one of my doctors. Don't protect this file with a password in case you get into a car accident and the first responders or ER needs this data.

Try RoboForm

by Fredmoore - 3/11/09 3:30 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've tried lots of password management programs and found RoboForm to be the best by far. After entering your master password, a single click opens a website and logs you in. (I currently have over 150 logins stored.) It can even fill in complex forms like address information for an online purchase and generate random passwords of any length. It's won many awards and the company sends regular updates. You can try the free version from: http://www.roboform.com/, then buy a license for $30 if you like it.

I use Password Depot 3.
It is the answer to all your passwords.
Simply download and purchase license.
There are many password programs out there but this one I like.
Pay attention to your email when purchasing this program, to unlock full version.
You will have to enter a Master Password, then you will be O.K.
