Let's start with Notepad.

That comes with Windows and it's free. Users can use it to edit and print text documents, while using My Computer as a document management system.

If this doesn't suffice, please refine your requirements!

A few additional questions:
- Stand-alone PC or a local area network?
- What OS on PC?
- Server available for central file storage? What OS?

No problems with your English.

Just with your requirements missing.

Put the documents in a (sub)folder like Health, Beauty, ... to categorize them. Problem solved?
If not, please explain what more you want than subfolders with a category and a text or word processor that can open and print the documents. That's all you wrote till now and I can't guess if maybe you've got other requirements then those you mentioned.

Why not Microsoft Office?

After reviewing their offering, I see they repeatedly compare their software to Microsoft Office. So why not just use Microsoft Office? It has greater functionality and a large database of free templates available for download.

OpenOffice is a free alternative, though the template selection is much smaller.

In their FAQ I read how they present their documents.

by Kees Bakker Moderator - 3/9/09 7:46 AM In reply to: i need this by sharacle

There are two ways to find a document:
a) Browse the document folders located in the left-hand window pane (if the document tree is not visible click the "View Document Library" button in the top-left corner). The "Browse" tab in the left-hand pane should be selected.

OR

b) Perform a keyword search by clicking the "Search" tab in the left-hand window pane (if the document tree is not visible click the "View Document Library" button in the top-left corner).

The first is like My Computer or Windows Explorer. The second like Windows Search. Your users have both, I assume. So why should they need anything else?

I won't download and install their program to see how it looks, sorry.

You might like MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint System). The disadvantage is the price: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointserver/FX102176831033.aspx. But you might be happy with the free (it's included in Windows Server 2008, and possibly 2003 also) Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0. It has something called a "team room".

(NT) You can do that with Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.

I've used a Doc Management System.

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 3/10/09 6:37 AM In reply to: finding a software - very important by sharacle

Frankly the entire company loathed it. The hours lost as the DMS decided we no longer had rights to an item and more led to it's eventual demise.

Are you sure you are not careening toward something that many have moved away from?

Let me be blunt. Viewing, editing and printing a file used to be considered beyond the untrained masses capability. Filing the document in the right place is easy to take care if you publish "the rules."

There is a reason there are few offers in such a space. The needs are usually created by someone in power and when they leave or deposed then a new system is brought in at great expense.

This Doc Management may seem like a great thing but only to those that dictate it, sell it or in huge enterprises but when we scale back to the usual 10 person office it fails to deliver.
