For the past 2 days, I've had trouble getting the AVG updates. Yesterday, it finally updated after a 30 minute hold time. When checking for updates, it said there was a new program update. When viewing the status screen, it showed the Update part was "Running." Finally after 30 minutes, it did update.
This morning I tried to update and it was in the holding pattern once again. After about 15 minutes, a message appeared saying the Update control file was missing and now has a red exclamation on the icon in the navigation area.
When viewing the status screen, it says I'm not protected; however, it still shows every active and working, except for the update part.
Is there any way to get this to work properly? Is AVG wanting to get out of the business? They've sure not been their normal selves for the past few months (LOL).
Thanks,
Julea
It eventually updates. Do you feel its a bug when it tells you it didn't update this time and it does later?
Or rather, do you feel we should shield the users from such information?
Bob
Would it be best to uninstall and reinstall?
The issue I see here is twofold.
1. Servers can only handle so many users so fast.
2. The software tells you it didn't update but does later as item 1 clears up.
So my question is whether future software shouldn't tell you that it didn't update on the first try?

but with the program; thought a reinstallation would give be back the supposed update control file that appears to be missing. I really don't think problems on PC as I have run scans of spybot, lavasoft-adaware, and even AVG, and come up clean -- just this morning. I also use spyware blaster and ccleaner.
So -- question back to you -- is there a way to get the update control file --- without having to reinstall the program again?
Thanks
http://free.avg.com/ww.download-update has the update files for manual updates.
I saw your update fail here too. It updated later on its own. My question is still "Should software shield the user more?"
Bob
Why not try another "Free Antivirus" program
I was using the AVG 7.5 without any problems at all
However I downloaded and tried the AVG Free Version 8 and had problems
I am now happy with the all downloadings [updates ETC] with the "Free Avast 4.8 Home Version"
Where is the issue here? It's updating just fine but annoying the user since it tells them it didn't on the first try.

I did learn something this morning. I had to be away from PC this morning for a few hours. I shut it down and when booting it back up, went for the update once again. It went like clockwork.
So, I learned something -- wait on it (LOL). What I did not know--when it said "Update control file was missing," I thought that might be a file I could get someplace, but what do I know.
Bob did not help me on that - only suggested there might be a bug. I needed to be guided a bit more than what he was willing to do. My issue was more than just waiting out the update as he seemed to think. I've waited on AVG before, but never had it tell me I was missing an actual file.
Anyway, it's taken care of now and I'll know better next time.

better if the AVG program used plainer language but I think they'd like to avoid embarrassment that their servers sometimes can't keep up as has been their historical habit.
"we're sorry but our update servers are overloaded presently, so auto update failed. The program will retry next time it is opened or or machine is rebooted." AVG customer care division.
That would work for everyone I think.LOL! Sandy ![]()
This malicious virus resides in the registry. Any attempt to use your browser to go to an anti-virus site: macafee, pctools, etc. will be blocked requesting a username and password. You can't use system restore. You'll have to boot safe and use an anti-virus tool on a removable media.
