Do you account for plasma break-in?

by coast2 - 3/6/09 8:31 AM In reply to: Pioneer PRO-111FD picture settings by katzmaier ModeratorCNET staff

Thanks for this forum.

I'm wondering whether your settings on plasma TVs (particularly the 111FD, which I own) are done on units that have run for several hundred hours and are therefore broken in. If not, then won't your settings apply only to new, non-broken-in units, since the appearance of a plasma TV's picture tends to change noticeably during break-in?

Thanks again.

I don't really account for break-in

by katzmaier ModeratorCNET staff - 3/6/09 9:50 AM In reply to: Do you account for plasma break-in? by coast2

I always break in all TVs for 24 hours before reviewing/calibrating them, but that's all I can afford to do and still deliver a timely review.

Some reference displays get periodically re-calibrated over time (I've tweaked my reference PRO-111FD half a dozen times, for example) but I generally don't update the published picture settings in those cases. If I get the chance, I will publish my latest (i.e. "broken-in") settings for that TV, at least, although the big caveat is that I haven't actually kept track of exactly how many hous I've put on it since I first got it. A couple hundred hours at least.

FYI, I added this Q&A to the FAQ since it's good stuff:

...for your timely and thoughtful reply. I'll keep an eye on the forum in hopes of seeing your "broken in" settings for the 111FD.

Incidentally, I did check the FAQ before posting my question--so I think it's good that you've added break-in info there.

Broken-in-settings...

...as promised, here's the changes I made as of re-calibrating the PRO-111FD for my latest review:

Manual color temp submenu:
R High: -4
G High: -1
[rest the same]

That's it. I didn't change any of the other settings. After nearly six months and at least a hundred hours heavy use as a reference display here at CNET, the Elite Kuro only needed that much tweaking.

Picture degrade or loss when going from 50" to 60" tvs

by ajuice - 3/7/09 7:37 PM In reply to: I don't really account for break-in by katzmaier ModeratorCNET staff

I didn't see any posts specifically for this type of question (perhaps someone could redirect me). I'm new!

I was interested in buying the Pioneer Elite Kuro--either the 50' plasma or the 60" plasma. I'm torn between the two.(I'd rather have the larger- but not at any noticable degrade )
How much degrade of picture is there between the 50" and the 60" plasma sets? Is the amount of degrade the same for LCD sets at the same sizes? Thanks Arnie

Have you thought about using the ISF-Modes (Auto/Day/Night)?

by chadmak09 - 3/9/09 7:25 PM In reply to: Pioneer PRO-111FD picture settings by katzmaier ModeratorCNET staff

Have you seen the ISF modes and how accurate they are?

I would HIGHLY recommend incorporating them and creating some "advanced settings". Of course you would need a serial cable and a software (ControlCal for example)that is capable of this, but The ISF modes really are nice!
I would recommend them to anyone who is willing to spend this amount of money for an ELite.

ISF day mode for example can get you up to 51fl without affecting other areas. This can really go a long way with those who have thier set in a room with a large amount of light.

What are the best settings to break in a new Pioneer 111fd?

by persianmf - 5/16/09 9:00 PM In reply to: Have you thought about using the ISF-Modes (Auto/Day/Night)? by chadmak09

I just bought a new 111fd and was wondering what settings should I use to "break in" this TV and how many hours should I use this TV at those settings before I do my own settings?

Breaking in the 111FD or 151FD

by lek-jj - 8/6/09 3:11 PM In reply to: What are the best settings to break in a new Pioneer 111fd? by persianmf

I found this somewhere: Contrast 30, everything else at 0, power save mode 2. I have used this on my 111FD and 151FD. When I first got the 151FD I used the Optium mode for some time and noticed the ghost image on my screen, not a burn-in. And then came the second 151FD and 111FD, I used the above setting for the first 50 hours or so and the screen mode "Zoom" with fast moving picture so there would be no bar line appear or any retaining image on the screen , setting the player at repeat play mode and turned on the fan low to keep the cool air movement arount but not directly onto the screen. The next 24 hours, changed the power save mode to OFF. Then back down to Mode2 to another 48 hours. And again power save to Mode 1 for 24 hours and so for up to the first 200 hours. Then this is time I like to watch movies out of it. My reason for doing this is like breaking in a brand new car at the first 2000 for 5000 miles. I notice a difference on my screens; the pictures improved after 200 hours and really nice after 500 hrs or so. The screens of the second 151FD and 111FD so far are much more imume to retain any after image. For example, where movies that are shown in wide screen leaving the upper and lower black line got clear up very quickly after using Zoom in a couple of minutes whereas the first 151FD took much longer to clean it up. Using a professional calibration on these TV with ISF mode really made a big difference on the quality of the pictures. Check on the ISF website for qualified technician. Hope this help!
