I'm using Outpost Security Suite Pro.....It is a good firewall & virus & malware product.!
I use vista firewall control. It works fine, but not as many options as zone alarm which doesn't work on vista 64 bit. Give it a try.
a little too complicated for me. Could be I have not the patience to figure it out.
I read all those Microsoft instructions... which was enough to blow my mind. ![]()
Thanks anyway for the thought!

I heard Comodo Firewall Pro can be installed in a 64-bit environment. I used it on Windowx XP x64, then I tried it on my laptop which runs in windows vista 64. It installed, but had little problems. You might want to try it, but just in case, uninstall it via safe mode if it doesn't work. Maybe it didn't work on mine because of some OS/Hardware settings.

It took them a bit to work out the 64-bit bugs, but it's a solid firewall and my current preference. Just note that you'll receive excessive alerts for the first few days as it 'learns' your system, but after that time it will become more like ZoneAlarm, promptng you less often.

I have procrastinated because of the learning curve. I can handle the excessive alerts for a few days but setting rules is something foreign to me if any of that applies. Hope it is not a problem. I see this two-way firewall is rated highly by some tests.
Thanks again.

First of all, I read on page 1 of this forum that someone thinks that Windows Vista is just like Windows ME. Pointless.
Believe me Vista will not fade away like ME. Microsoft spent WAY too much time making the GUI as nice as possible. Microsoft is really ahead of the game, give it another year and all computers will be running vista just fine. 4GB of ram will be standard on most PC's and all software developers will jump on the Vista x64 train, and everything will be compatible. It's just inevitable.
As for the firewall, I can't wait until ZoneAlarm is compatible. For now Defender and AVG are working great for me.
The best protection suite for all 64 bit versions of Windows, including XP Professional x64 and Vista Ultimate 64 is AVG:

Comodo would be the best firewall for Vista 64-bit.
I see none in sight, and to the best of my knowledge Bill G. doesn't either.I couldn't find one on the internet...free or otherwise,Cnet and zdnet are full of hot air...as usual. Good luck.
Comodo has a Free 64 bit firewall and a Free 64 bit Anti-virus. I've been using it for about 6 weeks with no problem. The Firewall is a little intrusive until you educate it.
VistaFirewallControl is just a utility that gives you a pop up window asking whether you want to allow or block connection attempts with the built in Vista firewall.
I highly recommend Comodo firewall for Vista. There's a 64 bit version available, it's one of the most secure firewalls out there, and best of all it's free. ![]()
It doesn't matter if it's "one of the most secure firewalls out there." This is something people seem to have a real hard time grasping, because they think of firewalls like anti-virus programs that are sitting there always monitoring things for anything nefarious. This is really only partly true.
Firewalls are really very simple programs at their core. They either allow or deny traffic through based on a set of rules YOU define. That's it, there's no real monitoring going on, just a set of rules the developer might have included by default that are triggered by common attack vectors.
People also tend to think that firewalls will protect them from downloading viruses or malware, which they won't. A firewall will quite happily let you download a virus infected file off a P2P network, or some malware if you're foolish enough to use Internet Explorer regularly. This is not what a firewall is or does.
And I don't care if you have the world's most secure firewall program, if the rules you give it to follow are insecure, you WILL get hacked.
Too many people just hit the "allow" button every time their firewall prompts them with something, and if you're going to do that, then the firewall is just sucking up resources on your system while providing no real useful benefit. An effective firewall configuration allows ONLY those things that absolutely NEED network access. Everything else is DENIED access.
And given that unless you are running around on hacking message boards or chat rooms, shooting your mouth off, the only hacking the average person needs to worry about are automated probes. These probes simply scan a system for a set of exploitable vulnerabilities, and if they don't find anything, move on to the next system. Any firewall can do that by and large, so there's really no added security benefit to anything beyond Vista's basic firewall. Sure the other firewall makers will try and convince you otherwise, but that's because they want you to buy their product. Probably 90% of everything you buy is something you don't really need, or that could be done just as well by something considerably cheaper. But someone's whole job is to convince you to buy something you don't need, and that the more expensive version is better. You think that Comodo and Zone Alarm doesn't have people like this working for them? That they're somehow altruistic just because they make a security oriented program? Don't kid yourself.
Comodo Firewall, Zone Alarm, and all the rest, are just resource sucking hogs that offer you NO substantive protection over Vista's bundled firewall. You may as well be building a moat around your house to keep the black night at bay, or a giant wall to fend off the invading Mongolian hoards.
