I am having a similar problem

by snsguy - 3/3/09 5:31 PM In reply to: any answer yet by nycest124

I have a brand new 650 model with the 2008 firmware and it's having the same issue. I had a bad tv from last august with everything being blurry and a black fluid melting throughout the screen anytime it went to a black scene and they changed the board out. The screen was bad to , actually three of them were bad . So I just got a brand new one that says it was made February 2009. I am seeing the motion becoming more fluid when I turn amp on but when it's off it still looks like it's on. Not like it is with low medium or high but the picture doesn't have normal motion blur. I was watching Cloverfield and there is a constant triple layer effect with anything in motion. I even paused it and you can see three seperate layers to the object. I a also wondering if this firmware is bad and if there is a way to fix this such as going back to the 2007 firmware?

motion weirdness

Thank God! I mean, unfortunate for both of us, but I was beginning to think I was going crazy about this. We need to keep in touch in case one of us figures this thing out. At least I know that there's something weird going on here. I'm wondering if we should try the firmware downgrade, but there's no coming back unfortunately.

Crazy

by snsguy - 3/3/09 9:58 PM In reply to: motion weirdness by nycest124

Ya it's good to know that I'm not crazy also. I've tried turning things down or off in the settings just to see if it would do anything. Here's a question for you. Do you happen to have Cloverfield? I was trying to watch that and the triple effect was making unbearable to watch. Tnhe movement is so fast instead of regular motion blur with the amp off and being smooth when it's on there is always a triple layer of objects all the time reguardless of whether it's on or off. If you have it on blu-ray check it out and let me know if it does it, I would appreciate it. Let me know fi you end up doing the downgrade of the firmware.

Triple images are in the source

by BlakLite - 3/4/09 5:27 PM In reply to: I am having a similar problem by snsguy

Snsguy, I also have a 2008.9 firmware on my LN46A650. I don't notice any of the problems that you are describing. What I am concerned about is that I think you may be confused as to where the triple picture effect is coming from. You say that you paused the disc and you can see the three images on the screen right? That's a clear indication that the three images are indeed part of the movie, not an effect of the TV. The TV's AMP system does not know when you pause your Blu-Ray/DVD player. AMP (when turned on) is always operating at 120Hz and you can't "catch it in the act" by pausing the input source. Why would there be three images on the source disc? I can't say for sure, but this is an interpolation technique that film producers use to reduce stuttering effects in fast moving sequences. This becomes more apparent the larger the screen is. For instance, on a cinema screen, a man running from one side to the other could be skipping 2 feet per frame (at 24 fps). This will be easily noticed by your eyes. Film projectors don't have an AMP-like technology, so the producers interpolate the frames in a similar way that AMP does on your TV. The difference is that film is always 24 fps while your TV can bump up to 120 fps. In other words, your TV can insert additional frames between the original frames. On the film, they don't have this option so they merge the interpolated frames together to create a double/triple/etc image with the intention of smoothing out the motion for the viewer. They then print the film with the interpolated frames. Thus, when you pause on a particular frame, you will see all of the frames that the producers merged together, completely independent of anything your TV is doing.

That being said, I'm not sure what player you're using, but some of them also have AMP-like technology to create interpolated frames. Check to see if you can turn this option on or off in your player's menus. Also, if your player has the option, try turning on the "24 fps" mode and see if that has any impact on your playback experience.

thanks for the insight

by snsguy - 3/4/09 6:10 PM In reply to: Triple images are in the source by BlakLite

Thanks for the response. I know that it may not be that AMP is causing it but it is the tv that is. I had the smae model with the same problem accept it looked a little different. It happned on all sourced and is happening on all sources. XBOX 360 Panasonic 55 Bluray player and Comcast cable. All are doing it. the tv is not reading motion blur as motion blur it creating this triple layer effect instead. On my previous 650 set I had a bad board and screen. The board did the same kind of thing accept it was blurry all the time. Board was switched with the 2004 firmware and it worked flawless the same movie I'm watching now look fantastic with no triple effect or constant blurrieness. The screen ws also replaced due to bad flashlighting and clouding and the new one was worse than the previous two that they replaced. Any way now that I got the new one th screen looks excellent but the board is causing this triple effect on every source again. I do understand what you are saying but this is not normal. I've seen what this tv can do because the last one did it right. This isn't even close to being right. What i was saying was the with AMP on it makes the image more fluid but causes a lot stuttering and the image still leaves a trail behind when even just a slight movement of the head happens on screen. The previous board I had none of this occurred on.

Changing amp does nothing to clear it up on any source.

To snsguy and nycest124

snsguy and nycest124: Did you ever solve your problem? I have a B630 and even when AMP is completely off, it still looks like the TV is performing frame interpolation or some kind of smoothing. The only way I can get back to the film look is if I turn Game Mode on, which COMPLETELY deactivates AMP. But this results in poor picture quality, so it's not a solution.

firmware for 650

by xman1030 - 2/8/09 7:22 AM In reply to: Any updates? by K0301R

I have a ln46a650 which has firmware 2008.9 with a build date on 10-15-2008. Samsung's website has firmware 2007.0 but has a build date of 10-20-2008. This firmware was made 5 days later but has a smaller firmware number. I was thinking that it might be typo that it says 2007.0.

Great observation. I would guess that it's also possible the 2008.9 build date is a typo, but your theory sounds more reasonable.

Hmmmmmm.... now they're going to say it IS a type just to shut everyone up. Kidding, but well, kind of not. :P

by JakeJMC - 8/5/09 7:53 AM In reply to: Best Buy announces new model LN46B650 coming soon by rebs081

I've had a lot of problems with my firmware 2007. I actually had the TCon replaced on my TV thinking it was the TV itself. My AMP does not work at all.... just got a call from someone who actually works at Samsung and they are sending me the 2008.9.. I'll let you guys know how it works
