From page 113 of the GL-2 manual;
"turn off the power of both the camcorder and the PC before connecting."
There is no need to contact Canon. Everyone who is informed on this subject knows better than to attempt a connection when the connection is powered up.
As far as powering camera and computer off i tried, still nothing. Also i have the Canon Gl1 not Gl2. I am also using vista and the dv messenger software manual says its only for windows xp but i dont have the software anyway. I feel like thats my problem every other camcorder i have had needed software to install the device driver and allow the camcorder to import videos. But i have no software. Appreciate the help any more ideas i can try let me know.
Thanks
Travis
That's next.
and get no response. That has been my point from the beginning. That's what you need to test to narrow down where the problem resides.
To be honest, I think you said this was a used camera. If so, it might have been blown before you got it. In the meantime, you have installed software which may have compromised your computer by replacing drivers (per R. Profit) with WinDV. Can you back it out? Probably not.
There is not much difference between the GL-1 and the GL-2 with respect to the firewire interface. If you are looking for a solution there, you are unlikely to find it. With my systems, when the camera fires up, Windows detects it. That is a given. If it doesn't do at least that much, you need to look elsewhere.
And please ask Canon to pull down that old document.
That includes the page number in the English section. In fact, I have the GL-2 camera and know how it works. If you want a link, you will have to look for yourself.
If you want Canon to do something, you will have to ask them yourself.
Do you mean that you are giving advice, and that you do not know this elementary level of information? More study of the firewire interface might be a very good use of your time.
I warned that this advice can blow the firewire port, but the post was deleted. Would Bob rather see a port blown than be contradicted? That's sad, but it confirms my thoughts on motivations.
Thanks for your contribution. Please ask Canon to remove their old DANGEROUS content.
daily basis about the danger of blowing ports. I guess Canon's advice in the GL-2 manual is just blowing smoke.
That's still sad. I guess cnet's goal is to insure that folks don't get the word.
Cnet's goal is not the topic here.
I offered the PDF, page number and text from that. You seem to think I wrote the manual.
Please help this member or I'll have to trim this post again.

to the strong possibility of a blown port, and by pointing out the practice which produces blown ports. Many of those posts have been deleted.
I'm done.
