I am having trouble importing video from my camcorder to my computer. I have firewire but when i plug it in my computer doesn't even recognize it. I have tried everything i can think of. I bought the camcorder used and didn't recieve any software. I don't know if thats what i need to get it to work or if its something beyond me. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Look for WINDV on google, yahoo or such.
If that doesn't work, try the camera on another PC or Mac.
Bob
to try different software such as Windv.
If Windows is not responding when you connect the camera with firewire and turn on the camera in playback mode, then there is probably a hardware problem. Firewire is a poorly designed connection, and easily burned out. All devices should be powered off before making the connection. The firewire port could be damaged on the computer or the camera. You can try the camera on a computer with a known good port. If that works, then you know where the problem lies.
I've had Windows not see it and yet WINDV work. It could be something odd in their machine, corrupted, malware or other but after dozens of successes I learned to try it anyway.
You're right that they do need to "ry the camera on a computer with a known good port. If that works, then you know where the problem lies."
Even then I have to see any other firewire camcorder work on that known good port before I call it 'very good.'
Bob
I was hoping that would work but unfortunately it still did not recognize my camera. Thanks for the help i will try to find another pc to plug into or i might just have to end up buying a cheap camcorder and use that to import my videos.
Thanks

A little detail so I can check things as:
1. The PC. Make, model so I can find the motherboard chipset driver package.
2. That Firewire card. I have this continuing run-in with those Dynex cards so known if it's another one could help. MAKE AND MODEL please
3. A little detail about that firewire cord. If you've used it before.
4. A little detail about the Canon. Does it work on other PCs.
Bob
Ok well my pc is a Dell Vostro 1500
As far as firewire card, im not sure what you mean. I looked in the book that came with the computer and it doesn't give me any info as to a firewire card.
The firewire cable is new and i have never used it with anything else.
I have never tried to import with any other pc or firewire cable with this camcorder. I used a buddies camera to import some video but i had to use the software that came with the camcorder and install the drivers. I asked a buddy if i might have got a bad cable and he said he doesn't think thats the reason it doesn't get recognized. I'm frustrated i just want to start editing.
Thanks
Travis
It is. You didn't tell if the firewire card came with the PC. If the other camcorder used it and more. As it stands I have to guess the PC is at fault as the firewire has never been used.
Some machines have the firewire on the motherboard. Sadly I need to know the EXACT model or your Vostro (give a link to us) so I can see if there is a bios setting that turns it off and on. I always give that a shot since I've seen Windows wake up the firewire by turning it off then back on. I will not enter in any discussion that this is a Hail Mary method. I will not give any defense for the poor state of the PC design and Windows annoyances.
Bob
well the computer came with a firewire port(ieee 1394) and when i check it in the control panel it says its working fine and its up to date. The model number of my computer is PP22L. I have not used the firewire port for anything else as the other camcorder had a dv to usb hookup. Im gonna try and get ahold of someone with a pc with firewire port and see if it gets recognized then.
Thanks
Travis
is there a dv to usb cable for my gl1?
something else i forgot to mention is that not only does my pc not recognize it but my camera should recognize it and say dv on the screen and it doesn't. I hope that doesn't mean my camera firewire port if messed up.
Thanks
Travis
RICOH OHCI Compliant ieee 1394 host controller is what is in my computer.

See page 118 and if no IEE device then we have to see if the Camcorder is set proper.
1. It is not on battery power!
2. It works on other machines!
These two items MUST be done!
3. Back to the camcorder.
"TAPE PLAY (VCR) mode: Mode for playing back video and sound recorded on
a tape."
I can see if the camcorder is in the wrong mode, it would not work.
1. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Connect the power adapter to the camcorder.
2. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Set the camcorder to TAPE CAMERA mode.
3. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Connect the camcorder to the computer using the DV cable
I don't see where you share you did this.
Bob
first off thats not my computer its a dell vostro 1500
I did use the power adapter still nothing.
Everything else i did as expected. until i can try it on another computer i can't say that it works or doesn't
I appreciate the help but don't kill yourself trying to figure out my problem.
Thanks
Travis
Dell has far too many overlapping models for me to nail it unless members supply a link to their machines.
We tried easy, we tried the usual. It looks busted. Just where and what is busted I can't tell.
Bob
Just so people know what Canon has in the manual.

If anyone feels this is wrong, please have Canon correct it.
