Honestly...why all the features?
by Switherer - 2/28/09 7:53 AMI'm considering upgrade from my plain-Jane phone to Blackberry or similar. I observe friends who brag up features of their fancy-phones, but don't really need or use them much. What are the advantages...really...of features beyond the ability to talk to someone on the phone? Is it REALLY helpful to play games, use the internet when away from base, etc., etc.? I guess I'm a skeptic. Convince me I need one of these things. If you have services beyond basic phone service, what advantage has it been for you?

I can check my work and personal email accounts from anywhere ... I depend on email for a great deal of my communication, so this feature is important to me ... the GPS comes in handy when traveling ... those are the biggest features for me ... also, when waiting for the kids at the bus stop or barbershop, or your spouse at the mall or grocery store, I can surf the net or read the news or paly games ... so you will have to decide for yourself what features would you use ....
Because I use them - if you don't need them...

I don't talk on it that much, actually. I am in class and meetings a lot, so I am not really able to talk on the phone too often.
I also use the GPS and maps feature a lot - saved me several times in Italy and Cairo recently. (I travel a lot) The wifi access for Internet instead of data saves me $$ when traveling so I don't have to pay expensive roaming fees.
I also use twitter, facebook and RSS feeds on my Blackberry all the time. gtalk, msn and blackberry messenger as well are very useful to me.
I don't play games, so have none on my phone, but I do have a lot of exercise apps and music on it, so when I travel I can keep fit.
I have Documents to go so I can also have important documents with me, and I sync my calendar with google calendar (which also syncs automatically with my home calendar and my work calendar)so I have all my appointments on the blackberry.
I do a lot of notetaking on it as well.
Features are useful if you need them.

I often remark to my wife that I'm very lucky to be doing this in an age where these devices are proliferate.
If you don't need the features, you don't need them. Get a simpler device. It will probably work better as a phone, since the other layers sometimes argue with each other about which is the more important. It will probably also have a longer battery life.
