Rating the stores

by danscruz - 2/27/09 8:18 PM

I'm looking for feedback on stores both B&M and on-line for who to stay away from and who to trust for shipping, service, product quality and product warranty protection on HDTVs.

reseller rating

Hi,
You can try this website.

http://www.resellerratings.com

I have used them in the past to avoid certain stores. For instance, when I was going to buy a new video camera, I found what looked like an incredible deal. However, the reseller rating showed a score of less than 20 out of 100, with lots of comments as to how the store worked.

Now sometimes, the rating for a website is lower than it could be. As I have seen scores in the 60's for sites I have succesfully used. Sometimes there are more people posting who had negative experiences than positive.

Good luck.

My Two Cents

I have used the reseller ratings website suggested by arnstrb for many years. I started using the site when online buying was a fairly new concept and wholesale prices for computer parts could be found only online. Since then some of the companies have instituted product reviews which have been very helpful. I received a real eye opener when I compared Tiger Direct with New Egg six or seven years ago. I used that information to guide my purchases.

I am not sure how they handle brick and mortar companies, but the online information is extrememly useful. As arnstrb stated and as we know in sales, the people who are unhappy are more vocal that the satisfied customer, but when you read the same complaint several times, a pattern is revealed. This is like getting inside information to guide your purchase.

This is a very powerful buying tool: http://www.resellerratings.com

They have good buys and communicatiion with customer, but beware of rebate items... They farm out their rebates and you may not get one.

Google It

A Google search will reveal a host of comparison shopping sites. I keep my favorites in a "Shopping" folder.

Most sites show (and compare/rate) sellers only after you search for a particular product. Many, but not all sites, show how many folks have reviewed a particular seller/product. If 10,000 people have rated a store and it's rating is 5 out of 5 it's a pretty safe bet it's a good place to shop!

When shopping for a relatively "big ticket" item I always compare at a number of sites. Not always but occasionally I find notable price differences.

The places I use include:
www.shopping.com
www.Pricegrabber.com
www.mySimon.com and
www.NexTag.com

A feature at NexTag I especially like is their "Price history" chart. This feature shows the price at which the item has sold during the past year.

Newegg

I bought my HDTV from Newegg and honestly thought that they did great service - not only prompt delivery but also they are easy to work with. The TV was delivered not by the usual Fedex UPS service, but by a small delivery group and they really made sure nothing went wrong.
I have purchased several other items from Newegg and I have never experienced any problems with warranty issues, customer service or payments. Hope it helps.
