Password Generators

by Sauranan - 2/27/09 9:54 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

By far the easiest method is to use Roboform. It pops up everytime you are asked to sign up for a website and will automatically fill in the forms from an "Identity" screen you set up in advance. When you enter your login name and password Roboform will prompt you to save both and provides a name. You can password protect this new entry or just leave the password blank. The next time you are at the site Roboform will popup the form and ask you if you want it to fill in the login and password.

Only problem is Roboform is not freeware.

Another easy and free solution is the freeware program Infinite Password Generator. In this program you decide on an easy to remember master password and then generate up to a 128 alpha/numeric password for any occasion. I particularly like this for online sites where loss of your password could cost you some serious financial problems or loss of identity.

The beauty of this program is when you retrieve the complicated password with your simple master password you can copy and paste it into the required location. This defeats any key loggers that might have sneaked onto your system.

I am sure there are others but these two have worked elegantly for me.

Keep it simple

by sfldogs - 2/27/09 9:57 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

As an example; if you are at a dog site, the password could reflect the topic. If you are at a cat site, the password could reflect the topic. If you are at a custom car site, the password could reflect the topic. The passwords will mean something to you. If you get so complicated at the 200 sites you go to, it's not only the older, that would forget. You don't get personel during the password fabrication,
just keep the topic in mind. It has been working for me.

Password Safe

by porlockgirl - 2/27/09 10:04 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hello William,
It sounds like you need something simple and easy to use but comprehensive enough to handle all the passwords you use now and in the future. There is a very small application called PasswordSafe and you can download it from http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/.
It's all you will ever need and you only have to remember one master password.

One to Bind Them...

by PhoenixFiresky - 2/27/09 10:05 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I also have memory issues. So I use one alphanumeric password for all my sites. I chose a word that is only 7 letters, because that is usually an acceptable length at any site, and paired it with a number. Not perfect, since if someone were to figure it out they'd have access to everything - but better than having to write it down or forgetting it.

The only time I use a different password is on sites I know I'll want to share - I have a different alphanumeric password for those, and always use the same one for all "shared" sites as well.

Use Firefox3+Foxmarks and a little bit of javascript tweak

by aaasolanki - 2/27/09 10:06 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi William,

Don't blame your age for this. I am 25 and as sharp as one can get at this age, but remembering more than 50 different passwords beats the hell out of me as well :)

To come to the solution, I love Firefox 3's inbuilt password manager which will ask you to save your new password 8 out of 10 times on a website you are logging in for the first time through Firefox. Some websites won't allow you to save your passwords. In that case you can modify a small javascript file named nsLoginManager.js. I found this nice article to make it easier for you -
http://cybernetnews.com/2009/02/13/firefox-remember-passwords/

Foxmarks is a Firefox extension that ensures your bookmarks & passwords are in sync across all the machines that you use. You just need to install it on each of these PCs and it will automatically guide you how to import your bookmarks & passwords. Don't worry. Its pretty safe since it is https secured and the passwords are encrypted using a PIN. You can get Foxmarks at -
http://www.foxmarks.com/

I have also read a lot about Roboform. I have tried it, but found it a little hard to use.

Thanks,
Abhishek.

How safe is to keep the passwords with a service Provider!

by moganti - 2/28/09 3:06 AM In reply to: Use Firefox3+Foxmarks and a little bit of javascript tweak by aaasolanki

How safe is to keep the passwords with a service Provider? Though I am sure the passwords are encrypted, still I want to know the security from people who really know about security.

Another problem with Foxmarks is, some sites such as Yahoo will not allow you to store passwords within the browser.

In the world of computers, you are never safe [:p]

by dexter_birdbrain - 3/14/09 12:52 AM In reply to: How safe is to keep the passwords with a service Provider! by moganti

Hi Moganti,

Mozilla (the creators) of Firefox will not allow malware or any 'loose-security' add-ons to be offered through their website. They thoroughly review and test them all, only after which they are made available to the general pubic. Even a few CNET articles recommended it (which is where I first came to know above it). So, I guess, that's enough said about Foxmarks' security. [:)]

Now coming to your grudge about Foxmarks and websites like Yahoo not allowing you to save password in your browser, you said it - Its the website which disallows you to do that. You can bypass this in Firefox whereby Firefox will save each and every password you enter. Here's what I said in my previous post - "Some websites won't allow you to save your passwords. In that case you can modify a small javascript file named nsLoginManager.js. I found this nice article to make it easier for you -

Thanks!

Managing Passwords

by jakmac1 - 2/27/09 10:08 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I don't know if I have the answer but here goes.I have a different password for everything. No duplicates.Next to my keyboard is a rolladex that has every account and site I deal with.It gives me the title, web address, user name, and password.I also keep a duplicate copy in my safe. The only way anyone could get their hands on my rolladex is to break into my home.If thats the case,I would get my duplicate rolladex and change my passwords. Then I would mourn the loss of my HDTV,my DVD player,AV reciever, the speakers, bedroom TV,and...

Passwords

by Yeoville - 2/27/09 10:12 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Some sites allow for a 6-character password, some 8, some 10, some more. However, as long as we can choose our own password we can control it.
Basic rules are
- case-sensitivity (I treat all passwords as case-sensitive – simplifies my life)
- mix of characters, letters, numbers, perhaps even a special character
What I do is to choose a word, e.g., peace. Create the password using 3 letters of the word “peace”. Let’s say, choose “pea”. Capitalise one of them and add 2 numbers and add a hyphen. So I end up with a password 1-Pea2.
I now have a password I can use everywhere.
For sites that have an 8-character password I just add 2 more characters, perhaps my middle initial and my wife’s middle initial. If I can have 10 characters in the password I add two more letters from our names. If a site (usually work LANs) requires changing the password every month I just change the numbers. My current numbers are 1 and 2. Next month I will change it to 1 and 3; the following month I change it to 1 and 4. After 1 and 9 it will change to 2 and 0.
If I use this password everywhere it helps me remember it. This is considered a strong password but not foolproof. We can play tricks with the word to make it harder for humans to guess, e.g., use “p1E2a-” (same characters but mixed up).

Help is on the way! lol

by Kim Smith-Bilby - 2/27/09 10:18 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've been dealing with this for years, and yes, it's frustrating.

I have a password folder in my documents. It's labeled something generic so if anyone gets into my documents they're less likely to look in it. I have them in a word document. Here's an example:

XYZ Department store
Password: jeysny28dQ
Email address: kdjfyrj@email.com
Security code: xyz

Every password I have is listed in a folder. You have to make sure the folder isn't shared and that you have a password protected log in. For that, I used a 7 digit number and wrote it down in my address book under some random business. I also have it in my cell phone under the same business name.

I don't trust password protectors. I don't know why, but I just don't think they're a good idea.

To prevent the passwords from getting compromised when someone else uses your computer, log out of your account and have them to log onto their own account or a guest account. Make sure you don't have internet explorer to save any passwords. Clear all of your cookies every time you sign out of a website. As long as other people aren't using your user profile, there shouldn't be a problem with your passwords showing up if they are saved.

Also, I make sure I turn off my computer and disconnect the internet when I'm finished using my computer. I've been told that I'm a little anal about this stuff, and I might be. But no one has ever gotten into any of my accounts!

By the way, I forgot the password for CNET and had to have it reset! Go figure....LOL

password

by majortoko - 2/27/09 10:24 PM In reply to: Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Create an 8 character password of numbers and letters. Nearly all websites will accept such. Use the same password for all your accounts.
(the computer wizards will tell you this is not safe)
Or, get Mozilla Firefox with the Skipper plug in. Skipper will remember all your passwords for you. You still need a master list somewhere if firefox should crash or you are stuck using IExplorer.
( back to first option).
