Paste disable - files trapped

by vansan19 - 2/19/09 9:28 PM

hp pavilion dv1000 notebook with XP Professional 2002 service pack 3
Intel Pentium 1.73GHz, 0.99 GB of RAM

I reinstalled XP Home edition SP 2, and now I have the option of entering either of the two OS.

XP Home is fine, with internet but no access to my files of XP professional.

XP professional - Paste is disabled for all the files, no access to Internet, if I create a new connection the icon does not appear, in User Accounts the window is blank. Also I cannot see the open windows in the taskbar and the Language bar appears in the left side, next to Start.

I want to save my files and format the laptop but I dont know how. I was told I could use FTP but I need the Internet connection.

Please, any suggestions will be appreciate.

Re: 2 OS'es

"I reinstalled XP Home". That's not really true. You had XP Professional, and you installed (not reinstalled) another OS (XP Home) NEXT to it. So now you've got to OS'es. That's quite legitimate. It's called a dual boot system. It's not clear why you didn't chose to reinstall the current (original) XP PRO OVER the existing OS, but obviously you did.

When you are logged in into XP Home, your XP Professional drive should be available under another drive letter in My Computer, presumably d: in stead of c:. Are they? Can you see them? Can you open them?

Now for saving the files: log in into the old XP Prof and copy them to an external hard disk or burn them to DVD or copy them to a USB-stick. Your choice, depending on how much data it is and what hardware you have.

Once that's done and they are VERY safe, come back here for the next step.

New problems

by vansan19 - 2/22/09 6:26 PM In reply to: Re: 2 OS'es by Kees Bakker Moderator

Hi Kees, thanks for the interest in this problem.

You're right, I have 2 OS's now, but in XP Professional I cannot copy-paste my files into USB, external hard disk or DVD because the "paste" is disable.

I installed updates of OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) and now I can copy-paste in excel, my files are still "trapped". Also I installed bluetooth in XP home and now I cannot see in XP Professional: the task bar (it seems hidden), the icons in the desk and the Start button.

Pacience to my soul, hope for good news.

Does Winkey+E bring up Explorer in the old Professional?

by Kees Bakker Moderator - 2/24/09 5:09 AM In reply to: instead of copy-paste by vansan19

That could be a way to run it and try (again?) to copy it.

Or can you access the files in Professional from Home (it should be just a drive letter)?

Or can you mount the drive in an external case and copy the files on another PC?

Three chances to get your data off.

Possible solutionż

by vansan19 - 2/23/09 7:54 PM In reply to: Try the old Kelley's fix. by R. Proffitt Moderator

A friend of mine says that I can upgrade XP Professional to Vista Ultimate or Business and still recover all my files.

Do you think it is possible to save my files with this actionż

I don't know how it is the procedure to do the upgrade and the most importat to me how can I recover my files.

Deadly suggestions.

That's not a good idea. Installing an OS can be hazardous to the files that have no backup.

-> Then again this is how people learn about backup. Most have to lose it all at least once to learn the lesson.

.REG files

by vansan19 - 2/24/09 7:39 PM In reply to: Deadly suggestions. by R. Proffitt Moderator

I download some .REG files from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm but the next message appears "The Administrator has disabled the registry modification". So I'm trying to fix that with some solutions I saw in the web.

About installing an OS, well, it is the last option I will use without backing up my files.

More info:
XP Profesional is version 2002 SP3, in System appears: 0.99GB de RAM (that is all). In explorer I see local unit C:, CD unit D: and E:

XP Home edition is version 2002 SP2, in System appears: Intel Pentium M processor 1.73GHz, 0.99GB of RAM. In explorer I see local unit C:, DVD-RW (D:).

How much are these files worth? 50? 99 bucks?

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 2/25/09 4:24 AM In reply to: .REG files by vansan19

For well under 99 bucks I can get a new blank hard disk. I can put that in and restore the OS.

After the machine is working and secured I can power down and add the old drive to copy my files over.

Some don't put a price on their files. I think they should.

Dual OS

by zxxxt - 2/27/09 12:58 AM In reply to: Paste disable - files trapped by vansan19

Not sure why you need 2 different versions of XP on your PC. But next time try using Virtual Machine, it is safer. Also don't forget to back up everything you need before installing a new OS.

A simpler problem

by vansan19 - 2/28/09 11:10 PM In reply to: Dual OS by zxxxt

Hi everyone,

Well, I tried to change some registers according to the website http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm but I found a new problem that it may resolve everything, I can't edit the registers cause it appears the message: "The Administrator has disabled the registry modification".

I think if I can solve that little problem I can edit the part of drag&drop and then move my files to a safe location lol... So if any of you can help me, please.

About the Registry Editor:
-If I use GPEDIT.MSC although it appears the window I can't change anything in it (in System).
-I downloaded and ran RegCleaner,Reglite, antiFreeze, Argente-Registry Cleaner, RegSeeker and Whocrashed... all found invalid registries and erased some of them but I didn't see some related to Drag&drop.
-Also my antivirus only found Adaware Yassist, unable of delete it, only rename it.

That's all for the moment, the Editor still is unreachable, but I'm getting closer. Ciao.
