by raptor 2001 - 2/22/09 2:42 PM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi,tring taking a xp disc home or pro doesn't matter that has a key code. First back up things use don't want to lose just in case, but you most like will not lose anything, but micro updates. i have done this & had no problem, put disc in drive restart pc boot from disc like an in stall go though all steps til you get to the spot where you have option to delete win xp or repair win,do a repair(note there are two options for repair, one is at the begining of install don't use that one!)and from there is't down hill from there windows will load your disc on the old windows and you will have to enter key code for the one you have in drive, simple it worked for me anyway hope this helps anyone out

No so fast on the Bootleg

by GreeneD-R - 2/22/09 6:25 PM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I do a lot of data recovery on system and I have seen system that were real and rue installs of XP and i have seen them fail the Window Genuine Advantage (WGA) test and i have even seen it fail on my own system during a install i stoped during a update from Windows Media player from 10 to 11 as i was not ready to install that version i stopped it and the system when into a fit and re-booted to the message the OS was not a true copy.. this was a IBM Thinkpad that came with XP it was true.. and it too me 3 hour to get that across to the people at MS but in the end I won the day and teh said i was right and gave me the new key and the system was restored.. Talking to them the told me the WGA fails more often then it does find a true bootleg system.

Most people running the bootlegs don't do updates and have bootleggers or turn off the updates. Any system you get should have the key on the box or on the paper work. if you do not have that there are programs that can extract your key which can be checked with MS to see if is a fake.

MS said it will fogeve some if they had no idea that the system that came installed was not real and you can get an OEM from online or you local Mom and pop computer store still for around $129 to $139 for XP Pro and $89 to $99 for XP home.

All you do when you get it is run the repair mode(the one after EULA and on the page where you would be ask to install XP at.

once you do this you can enter the new key and move on and you need to make sure you keep your key safe and if the WGA hit you again you can use it to to fight their bad spyware.(by MS sending out a program to see if you are a well lets say it a Theft they are walking a thin line of legal rights but that whole different tread)
Ms has told me that they do not know what it is that sets off the WGA to read a faults error but they are trying to fix it but today both XP and Vista have had more untrue hits than real hits for fake version.

I would at best get MS on the phone tell them this system cam pre-installed with XP there is no sticker(if there is and it is for XP Pro give them the info) MS should work with you use the the activation program in XP get the pre-key and get on the phone and talk to the Service people that are open to working with you even if it turns out to be a true hit with the WGA. you need to have a XP cd get it its worth having it in the first place. I have 3 system 3 laptops and on desktop but one CD .. but i have 3 real keys not a bootlegs but the keys from on the laptops and from the OS ID in the system it self.. and MS has said all are true keys some the WGA can not give me a fault error again.

If anyone buys a system off eBay or Crag's List go get the WGA testing program and run it AFTER YOU DO A BACK UP FIRST..do not run it till you do the backup the system then run you can test to see if you are in deep water. Once you have run the test and are clear keep you info and test info as I have seen system that have passed fail later and MS seem to not to be as forgiving on second fail WGA but it does happen and they know it.

Don't up to Vista you'll just get more worries and Win 7 isn't going to let update in place to it from XP so your best bet is get XP pro and deal with getting back to running or get MS to make sure you didn't get hit with bad test(you need real CD anyway so get it )

Never give up due to the WGA going off its not always what it seems at one time there was bug on AOL tat set it off as well .
there are many ting that can go wrong but your system being a bootleg isn't at the top of the list when i see the WGA go off.

Reactivate Windows XP.

Call Microsoft. They generated a new activation key for me when mine expired.

Better off buying a used copy

by cytherian - 2/23/09 7:37 AM In reply to: Reactivate Windows XP. by florianfox

I've heard from others who have dealt with Microsoft over a validation issue and most have not gotten satisfaction (either given some absurd amount to pay or many hours of waiting around to eventually be told to send in the original disks!).

A very inexpensive solution is to buy a legitimate used copy. Many are for sale in various on-line venues. You just make sure you buy from a trustworthy seller and ask the right questions about the materials (disks, OEM certificate, license key, etc). I have seen copies frequently sell below $50.

The next time you purchase a computer, make sure that the O/S is legitimate. If the person does not have the original disks, it should be possible to have them demonstrate it as being validated by Microsoft. Also be sure to get the license key information. This way you can transfer the O/S if you decide to cannibalize the computer for parts and want to use the O/S on another machine.

only right thing to do.

by beyondtoday - 2/23/09 8:33 PM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

First contact the man you bought it from and ask him yo supply you with a legal version disc of XP which by law must be sold with the computer,if software is on the computer you buy

Secondly if he say's no and your recipt shows computer with software you can contact microsoft and report him under the electronic agreement for using microsoft software

thirdly you can buy a new copy of xp but really you would be better off waiting and geting windows 7 have used this OS in the beta stage and got to say best they have made so far.

lastly if you are so inclinded you can surf the net on some of the hack sites and get an illegal piece of code to make it work But I wouldn't advise that cause it may have viruses embeded in the code.

Hope it helped you in some way

Both answers legal and illegal.

by jpennie - 2/24/09 12:16 PM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

As you may have already read here are some ways both legit and so so.

Buy another copy of XP and reinstall from scratch.

Buy another copy of XP and use the product key on your illegal copy.

OK now that we got that out the way here's what you need to do.

You can search for product keys for just about any software on the market.

You can get a copy of a software called Clone CD in it has the ability to make fake software appear legit. I dont know how it does it but it works.

Just remember Microsoft's focus is on Windows 7 and purchasing an operating system from two units ago just doesnt seem worth the hassel. Besides 7 will drop and your going to have to do this all over again anyway.

Skipped Details

by Good-PC.Guy! - 3/14/09 9:40 AM In reply to: Both answers legal and illegal. by jpennie

Well Jay, you touched on some interesting hooks but, leave me hanging for the details. It seems you may have some stuff worth knowing. Too bad we can't talk.

Anyhow, did you mean "Clone CD" or actually 'CloneCD', (or maybe 'CD Clone') ??
I'm sure that we've all found other CD duplicating SW which also make exact bit-by-bit copies (clones) of any original CD... so are you meaning to say that this is any different?
Have you ever tried to use that same SW to copy a CD to any drive, or, a hard-drive to another hard-drive ?

Also wonder WHERE you meant to search for SW keys !?

Maybe what you've written is clear to others and I'm the ONE who can't see what all you're telling ?
Whatever, a little more detail would be nice.

This is unnessary

by elyanonC - 4/17/09 8:55 PM In reply to: Skipped Details by Good-PC.Guy!

You might have thought your little comment was cleaver: try to get it up to say what you want too instead of playing very bad word games. I would imagine you have never had the joy of dealing with MS, having a leitimate copy called illegal; it is so much fun change your motherboaed, yes a piece of hardware and you'll be a little more understandig. Then agin you probably won't.

_'unnecessary' , INDEED ?

by Good-PC.Guy! - 4/18/09 8:10 AM In reply to: This is unnessary by elyanonC

WELL el.C, CAN'T BE SURE OF WHAT YOU'RE ACTUALLY REFERRING TO BUT, IT'S LIKELY THAT YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE WHO BOTHERED TO CONSIDER WHETHER IT WAS "cleaver" .
PERHAPS YOU ACTUALLY HAD INTENDED TO POST YOUR REPLY TO SOME OTHER POST.....

YOUR SEEMINGLY NON-DIRECT TANGENT OF "the joy of dealing with MS" SUBJECT MATTER, IS A TOPIC BETTER PLACED ELSEWHERE.

IT SEEMS THAT YOU MUST HAVE REPLACED YOUR MOTHER-BOARD AND AFTERWARDS FOUND THAT YOUR M$ OS WAS CURTAILED.
IF SO, THEN IT IS DISCONCERTING THAT YOU ASSOCIATE THE WORDS "fun" & "joy" WITH SUCH AN EXPERIENCE.
BUT THEN PERHAPS YOU DON'T ACTUALLY PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH, AND DON'T REALLY CARE TO "say what you want to" .

I'VE HEARD OF AT LEAST TWO WAYS TO AVOID OR FIX SUCH A PROBLEM AS THAT WHICH YOU'VE BROUGHT-UP, WITHOUT HAVING TO DEAL WITH M$ !
PERHAPS SOMEBODY ELSE WILL WISH TO HELP YOU WITH THAT INFO. _ OR MAYBE YOU'LL STILL HAVE TIME TO FIND IT YOURSELF, PROVIDING THAT YOU DON'T KEEP TAKING TIME OUT TO CLAIM WHATEVER POSTS YOU FIND TO BE "unnessary" .

How to make your copy of XP legit

by gimili2 - 3/10/09 5:53 AM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This is possible. First you must have a legit copy and BACK UP ANY DATA!

Format your HDD and install this copy. Make sure that the key that you are using is not ILLEGAL!

It is quite interesting to note that you can legally activate the same product key more than once. I have 2 computers with the same CD key and both receive updates just fine and both are legit systems.

This is how activation really works:
1. Windows XP generates a random key
2. It sends that key over the internet to a Microsoft Server
3. The server using programs that use mathematical equations to generate your return key and sends it to XP
4. XP uses the same equation to check the key
5. If the key is valid (according to the mathematical equation) all is well

Cheers,
Gimili2

It's like starting anew

by lahick - 3/13/09 7:14 PM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I do this all the time with my computer, whether I'm building a new one or just redoing my hard drive. If you buy the full system and install it on your computer it is like you're wiping the hard drive clean and starting all over again. So it doesn't matter what type you have now or if it's even legal. As long as you buy the full version of XP (which will be hard to find now) or Vista (which sucks) it will rewrite over what you have now, everything will be lost. But you might want to just wait a little and get the new version of Windows that is coming out soon.

Use the IT Professional Service Pack page at Microsoft.com

by rpandya - 3/16/09 10:48 AM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This downloadable Service Pack allows you to get your needed updates in one package without tangling with Windows Update. The page will suggest Windows Update if you are only updating one computer, but don't listen. This is the method for updates used by many IT folk who don't want to connect their whole LAN to the internet to get updates.

To get legal with MS you'll probably need to buy a license certificate or buy a system builder edition of the OS.

Malware hacked ?

by Good-PC.Guy! - 4/19/09 11:08 AM In reply to: cant read by redlarge

Please let us know if the change (from English?) occurred while surfing the web/net.

I believe i had that happen to me (with Win.2000) years ago whlie surfing some Middle-Eastern sites.
Likely, you'll be able to undo such a change but, you better first check your system with some anti-malware programs!
If you don't already have any which found problems to fix, then you can find many good anti-malware programs to try at 'Download.com' !

__ It's too bad that you (likely) don't have a 'DUAL-BOOT' PC set-up! ... Cuz if you did, you'd then be in a lot better shape to continue-on!
