I had 8mm tapes professionally transferred to discs. Now I want to transfer the video from my disc to my desktop so I can use one of the movie editing programs. I have Windows XP. I was guessing that I had to copy and paste? When I try this I get an error message stating Windows does not support this type of disc. It is a regular DVD disc so I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Please help I am computer illiterate when it comes to this! Thanks!
- The exact error message please.
- When exactly does the error message appear (opening the drive letter, selecting the file, copying the file, pasting the file).
- What file (size in bytes and extension, that's the part behind the dot if you set the folder option to NOT hide extensions for known filetypes).
- Can you do what you want with a regular movie DVD you bought in some shop?

The exact message says "Windows Does Not Support This CD-R Format please try another disc." It happens with any disc I put in. I tried a couple of movies. They start up to play right away and play fine. I just can't transfer the video to my desktop. When I put the disc in I go under "My Computer" and find the "devices" and right click on the picture of the DVD, hit copy, right click again and hit paste. A box pops up showing files being transferred from one folder to another but almost immediately the error message pops up and my only option is to cancel. I have no idea how to answer your third question. Sorry.
Try it another way.
Open the drive in My Computer, select 1 file in 1 folder and use Edit>Copy to to a folder on your hard disk. Does that work?

Sorry but I am alittle confused by what you are saying here.
What does this mean exactly
"It happens with any disc I put in. I tried a couple of movies. "
But then you say
"They start up to play right away and play fine."
Please explain where do the disk play fine? Your computer, a stand alone player?
If this disk you have is a standard DVD then when you place in your computer drive and look at it though "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer" you see the following folder listed.
1) the name of the disk listed next to the drive letter
2) Next the folder named "F:\AUDIO_TS " in this case my dvd drive is "f"
3) Next the folder name is "F:\VIDEO_TS"
4) Inside the F:\VIDEO_TS folder should be a bunch of files like listed below:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
Do you have these files listed?
If not what is listed under you disk?
Finally are you sure you have a DVD drive? If so what is the model number and make. You can find this information under Run /Setting/ Control Panel/ System/ Hardware / Device Manager.
Ok That is enough for right now.
Oh sorry. I meant that DVD's will play fine, they just won't download/transfer to my desktop so I can upload them into a movie editor program. I do have a DVD drive. When I go to Devices and Storage it shows the disk and the following VRD_MC3 (D:) then under it there are two folders "VIDEO_ RM" and "VIDEO_TS". If you click on each of those folders there are a bunch of things like SYSVRD.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP and VTS_01_01.
The company who transfered our 8mm to DVD just got back to me and this is what he said.."
Hi Ben,
Actually, the video on a DVD is compressed, just like a DVD you would buy at the video store. In order to edit it yourself on your computer you would need the raw video. It is conceivable that we might be able to transfer the raw video from your original tapes and put it onto a hard drive or multiple data DVDs so you could then edit it yourself. The only problem is we don't use any Windows software. What is the name of the Windows software? Maybe I could research it and find out what video format it would accept. I may be able to convert it to WAV or AVI or something like that. It not something we normally do, so we don't really have a procedure for that."
So is this a lost cause? Or is it just a matter of converting the format like he mentioned? That I may be able to figure out.
