XP Support

As far as I can tell, they're supporting it because: 1 - It is so widely in use, and; 2 - they made the commitment when Vista was causing so many problems.

RE: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again

by cassgreen - 2/20/09 5:20 AM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi Gary. First of all, Windows Genuine Advantage was the answer from Microsoft to free OS downloads. If it found that the copy of Windows XP is not validated, not genuine, counterfeit, unlicensed, pirated, illegal, unauthorised or simply failed the Windows Genuine Advantage validation process, then the notification messages will appear at various places and time. I don't think there is a legal way to solve your problem. Product keys were untill 3 to 4 years ago sufficient. Thats why WGA was implemented in Windows XP. There might be a crack some where around. With new release of WGA, some methods no longer works, and some has been updated. Several methods that has certain success on certain people, you may try until you success. Though i would not recommend such. Oh and if you choose to install XP (legally) on your pc and you want XP PRO, just make sure u aquire the Windows XP Pro disc ;-). Hope to help you with this!

XP SYSTEM LEGIT

by resloveurproblems - 2/20/09 8:57 AM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

RECENTLY I'M TOO HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AS WHAT MR.GARY H. HAS MENTIONED.I PURCHASED A PC WITH WINDOWS XP VERSION ON 2005,FROM A LOCAL RETAIL SHOP.IT WAS A PRE-INSTALLED SOFTWARE PC.I WAS NOT GIVEN ANY SOFTWARE CD ALONG WITH THE PC.IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT I NEVER HAD ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS IN BETWEEN THOSE DAYS BUT SINCE THIS GENUINE VALIDATION IS INTRODUCED THROUGH UPDATES,STARTED CREATING PROBLEMS FOR ME.I TRIED TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION PROVIDED BY THE MICROSOFT, TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEMS BUT AS I HAVE MENTIONED THAT THERE IS'NT ANY AUTHENTIC DETAILS, PARTICULARLY ABOUT THE SOFTWARE THAT CAN BE PROVIDED. THIS WAY OF RESOLVING THE PROBLEMS WILL NOT WORK.
I SEE A HUGE NUMBER OF CLIENTS USING THE MICROSOFT, HAVE FALLEN PREY TO THIS AND I THANK TO ALL WELL WISHER OF THIS FORUM WHO HAS GIVEN MANY SUGGESTIONS BUT WHAT I FEEL IS THAT ULTIMATELY IT IS THE MICROSOFT COMPANY TO LOOK INTO IT AND HELP ITS CLIENTS TO COME OUT OF THIS PROBLEMS AND HANDLE THE SITUATION AMICABLY.

Ajit, If you purchase a computer from a store the invoice for the purchase should tell you whether you have a license copy of the software. From what you have reported, that may not have been the case. In fact you may be the victum here and the you need to validate all your MS products have license or you may receive a knock on the door from the fing folks at the computer software alliance, who may have a formal complaint in hand that you do not have license software the fine could be up to $100,000.00..

So I would such that you have a come to Jesue moment, or whatever your religious affiliation may be and do what is necessary to validate all that you have as valid with Microsoft. To do that use the Produckey software tool found at nirsoft.net It will tell you what product Id and licenses you have on your system and you can contact Microsoft to validate them...

Lastly, if your vendor who sold you the PC represent to you that you were going to recieve License for the software then you must have that in writting in order to prosecute him for defrauding you. As for Microsoft being liable.... NO THEY are not, everyone should know whether they have licensed software and if they don't then they run the risk of defrauding Microsoft and they will win every time..

Be Carefull ! And please type your posts in lower case, Upper case is shouting.

get a legit cd key

by petershum - 2/20/09 7:53 PM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If you can obtain a legit CD key, you can change the current CD key through editing the Registry. Microsoft has a bulletin on how to change the CD key. As to how to get a legit CD key, it is up to you to figure out.

Making XP Legit...

by wiz2525 - 2/20/09 8:15 PM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

You already know you can just start over. Get a legit copy. But you have to reinstall everything because whatever is there will have no registry entries in the fresh copy of XP. Also, based entirely on my own personal experience, I would stop the patching process (if you choose this route, and there are other options you should consider) at SP2. SP3 gave me fits, and bogged my machine back into the dinosaur age. The real problem is that we are in a transition stage for Microsoft with regard to their OS.

Vista has largely been a bust, from all the information I received. I received XP Pro in the mail on the day it was officially released. I loved the performance level it provided at the time, but time moves on. As they keep patching, they accumulate the patches occasionally in 'Service Packs'. They clean up the overall code as much as possible from all the little patches and release an SP. But SPs are like patching a leaky roof. At a certain point, it's time for a new roof. What made it even worse was that Vista, the next 'new roof' was not very successful. A lot of users chose not to replace XP with Vista, myself included. So they had to keep patching XP. SP1, then SP2, and then...SP3. I lost access to an ethernet backup drive as a direct result of installation of SP3, and this is one of the key things about my system - storing and accessing my photography and videos, my very extensive music collection, and all this data had been moved to the ethernet drive. I dreaded having to reinstall XP from the beginning because I would have had to reinstall all my programs, a very big job. Very tedious. And time consuming. So, in a way, I was staring down the barrel of the same gun as you are now, though for different reasons.

Here is what I chose to do. Your mileage may vary.

I heard about Windows 7 beta. It was released not long ago. If I was going to have to reinstall everything anyway, I really didn't want to go through that if I was only putting on a very tired OS with many patches, and with a patch that I knew better than to reinstall on my machine yet one which was probably important to install if you could get away with it. So one day I bit the bullet. I downloaded W7beta and installed it.

It certainly is a beta. But my machine performs very very well under it. Plus, by installing it I was able to easily reconnect with the ethernet drive! As I said, it is a beta, and one of the major problems with it is that some software will not recognize this 'unknown operating system'...such as my Panda Antiviral Software! (I worked around this until the official version of 7 comes out by installing AVG Free). Other problems of a similar nature exist such as my Soundblaster card only using 2 speakers instead of the 5.1 I have installed, and the program itself has other 'beta' like glitches such as inexplicable hangs of various programs. But compared to XP in its death throes, I am quite content.

I can't give you any advice on Vista, other than that it is an unpopular OS which will be replaced by 7 late this year, which should tell you something about its expected life (see Windows 2000). Your hardware must be up to snuff for the beta to work. Do some research before you start. Old equipment may not ever have drivers written to accomodate 7, such as printers (I have a photosmart 1215 which I will probably have to replace) or older sound cards, video requirements are greater, etc. So look it over. It could be too much for your existing system. Good luck! It's like open heart surgery for your computer, and you have a lot of major considerations to mull over.

Windows 7 Beta is sweet but...

by Hey_888 - 2/23/09 9:22 AM In reply to: Making XP Legit... by wiz2525

It's not for everyone. Depending on your system configuration, your system will run very slowly.

I have a 2.8 GHZ Pentium D CPU with 256 MB AGP video and 1 GB of Ram. My hard drive is fast and it's the only device that was rated decently as far as Windows 7 score. Otherwise, the average rating is 2.5 and it's horribly slow.

Besides, you can no longer get a Windows 7 Beta.

There are other options available including pleading with Microsoft and tell them you lost your key. Some reps have been very generous in giving out keys. Of course, there is always buying an OEM or retail version of XP.

7 Beta Not available anymore?

by wiz2525 - 2/21/09 1:26 AM In reply to: Windows 7 Beta is sweet but... by Hey_888

I didn't know that. My machine has Athlon Dual 64 processors, I think 2Gb RAM. It runs notably faster than it did under XP Pro SP3. But it is a machine constructed by a very knowledgeable friend of mine, and naturally I have some quirks, just nothing that would make me go back to fighting it out with XP. I personally think SP3 sucks. Your mileage may vary...

Is it an IBM PC?

by lambstudio - 2/20/09 9:07 PM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If so (pre 2005) you can order recovery discs from IBM. Just give them the model and serial number, if COA is XP

What I would do is go to ahshampo and buy the 2 programs that would replace it
1--Windows 2008
2- Office

Both programs work the same as the High Price ons from MSN, and have the same work abilty as MSN and the are compatabil with the others,
For way less $$

It's possible that the OS is legit.

by EKlumppJr - 2/20/09 10:31 PM In reply to: Help, I need to make my Windows XP system legit again by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My OS (Vista HP) on my Dell laptop wouldn't pass the Microsoft genuine test, but it was the original OEM UG form Dell, and ran fine for about a year and a half. It turns out that the HDD was failing and the corrupted data was keeping it from passing that test. A new (under warranty) HDD from Dell resolved my problems.

I'd look for the original XP Pro sticker from Microsoft on the laptop and check out the info with the computer manufacturer before purchasing a new license/software. As others have mentioned a recovery disc from the manufacturer and a reinstall may be all that you need.
