Do I need a data plan for the T-Mobile G1 if it's Unlocked.?

by Newerabs - 2/17/09 7:59 AM

Ok so I would like to buy the G1 for T-Mobile but I can't really afford to add a data plan right now (internet). I know that it's required in order to make the phone work, I'm wondering if I unlock the phone can I use it without the internet. And what kind of unlocking would it require... and where could I do that?
Thanks!

http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f41/g1-with-no-data-plan-3013/index4.html

I have questions myself, not being a T-Mobile user. First, will T-Mo require you sell it to you for full price(?) I assume to get the $179 price you will at least need to initially sign up for a month's worth of data. Will they let you cancel, or is it required for xx mos like some other carrier's discounts stipulate(?) I'd also ask at Howardforums.com to get some options on the G1.

Sorry, I meant to answer your question as well ;)

Unlocking a handset is separate from using data. It implies the unit can be used by inserting an active SIM of another carrier. The problem with the G1 is that it lacks one of the 3G frequency bands used in North America by ATT, so it is handicapped out of the box for 3G use on networks other than T-Mobile.

Don't think activation of phone is possible without plan

I recently got a G1 and it took almost an hour to get my account moved over to the new SIM card I got with it. During that time, there was no way to activate the phone with Google because you can't turn on WiFi until it is activated. There may be some hacks around this, but I do not believe so out of the box. Not sure about being able to cancel the data plan, but one thing you could try would be to activate the phone using someone else's SIM card with a data plan. The phone should be fine with that, but not sure if it associates the activation to the SIM card that is inserted.

Cripes, it's theft or embezzlement, whatever criminal act applies, in other terms - you're going to steal the bandwidth. Sorry if I offend, but. What other name can you call it? Justified use of someone's money?

I really don't think you have the slightest clue what's being discussed here. There's no talk of any theft of any sort, namely stealing or not paying for data. If you don't understand what's being discussed, simply ask.
