Okay, well, I understand now. Thanks, Grif.
Anyhow, I didn't get it to work after trying deleting recent.
Then, there was delete Favorites and so on.
I didn't try anything after deleting Recent, because it seemed irrelative. Any other ideas?
Sometimes, it requires recreating the appropriate registry entries listed in that link.
It takes a while to ferret out some of these types of problems.. Read ALL the posts in this thread and try them.
Hope this helps.

Hey grif
Im running a Dell Optiplex 745 with XP Pro SP:3
I while back i tried to uninstall Quickbooks as i wasnt usung it. I then got the following error..
"Error 1606.Could not access network location :."
I then manually removed the program and used CCleaner to clean out the Quickbooks regeistry keys. I am now trying to uninstall Apache 2.0 and i still get the same error. Another thing that is quit odd is I use Alarm 2.0.4 From Bluefive software. When the alarm is suposed to go off the quickbooks uninstall error pops up preventing my alarm from going off. Iv tried everything i can find even things that dont seem to be related. I also dont get why in all the other errors people post it gives a specific lacation. The error i get just says "Error 1606.Could not access network location :."
Any help?
With that error, the suggestions in this thread should get it done.. It involves editing the registry so if you're not comfortable tinkering there, then you'll need help at your location. Start with the two links below and if they don't get it done, read some of the other suggestions in the thread:

And sometimes you need to completely recreate the "User Shell Folders" keys mentioned in the link below..

I had an ERROR 1606 when uninstalling IronSpeed5.2.1.
Here's link to screen image http://www.box.net/shared/aodb9sjnm6
I tried the various suggestions in this forum.
I did not have a Recent entry in HKLM or HKCU, but all other entries were the same. So no issues to resolve.
I found this link
http://www.designcommunity.com/messages/21441.html
I went to the Installer\Products\IronSpeed5.2.1 and deleted that
entry and sub keys. Got out of regedit and rebooted.
Everything is ok now.

So, I should try EVERYTHING listed above, even though it's not related to my problem?
Like, relocating favorites, changing administrative tools, ect?
My favorite method for such things is to make a backup of the registry, then manually edit the appropriate entries.. Your favorite may be something different. You'll want to note that others in this thread have needed to manually recreate the affected registry entries:

Okay, I've used CCleaner which made my PC go a tiny bit faster.
Didn't solve my problem.
Now, I can't edit my problem-causing entry, since I dunno which it is...
Anyway, I'm gonna try to contact Microsoft, but I can't find their e-mail anywhere...
I have problem with error 1606 as well. I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 2. My IE 6.0 didn't support Java (and there was no options concerning Java in my Tools-->Internet Options --> Advanced), so I downloaded and installed IE 7.0. But after the installation, my IE got corrupted, it can't connect to the Net and it can't even load a page on my own harddisk saying that the directory name is invalid (It IS valid for sure). It can't be closed too, except by Task Manager.
So I use Firefox 1.5.0.7 instead which can connect to the net and I tried to install Java runtime environment for many times but always got the error message:
"Java Setup
! Error1606. Could not access network location
http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/Getfile/1.6
0-05-b13/windows-i586/jb160000.cab
Retry ---- Cancel"
I've tried to delete the "Recent" portion using regedit as suggested by Grif Thomas, then restarted and tried installed Java runtime (jxpiinstall.exe from java.com) again, to no avail. The error message now changes to:
"The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package"
I've been using Java applets in my own Web page for so many years, that's why I need my browser to support Java. In the past my old browsers (Netscape, IE 5.0) they all supported Java by default, no need for add-ons update at all. I hope you can shed me some lights of how to solve this problem. Thanks in advance!
It's not clear which version of Java you've tried to install but please try again using the instructions below:
Click on the link to Sun's Java below, then scroll down and click on the ''Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6'' download button. Follow the prompts, accept the license agreement, choose your operating system and "multi-language", then download the full ''Windows Offline Installation'' file to your desktop,(about 15 MB), scan it with your antivirus (just to be sure it's clean). Once that's done, if you've already got a Sun Java version on the computer, open the Control Panel, double click on the ''Add/Remove Programs'' section, then uninstall all previous versions of the J2SE Java listed there. Once that's done, then install Java JRE 6u6 from the downloaded installer.

If that still doesn't get it done....
Both IE6 and IE7 support Java.. If you can't install it, then that's a corrupted system or registry, or both.... In addition, you're using an extremely old version of Firefox.. Currently, it's on 2.00.14. Internet Explorer doesn't normally corrupt for no reason.. You might have spyware, viruses, or simply a file system that needs fixing..
That said, because it appears like the registry is having issues as well as a corrupted file system, I would move toward repairing the entire system.. If you've got a set of Recovery Discs for your computer, (you need to tell us the brand name, model number, etc.), I would start by placing the Recovery Discs in the CD/DVD drive, restart the computer, then see if there is a "NON-destructive" repair.. Be sure to back up all important files first, but a "NON-destructive" repair will reinstall the operating system as it originally came from the factory and hopefully fix the issues you're having.. If that doesn't work, then I generally perform a full DESTRUCTIVE repair which reformats the drive and reinstalls EVERYTHING back to a factory state. The DESTRUCTIVE repair will eliminate all data from the drive so be sure to make a current backup of your important documents.
Hope this helps.

Thank you so much, Grif, for your kind response and assistance. I tried installing Java so many times that I remember that it's JRE 5 Update 6. The PC that I have problems installing JRE is my own PC that I use at my office. It's a no-name PC which I had to change mainboard, CPU, RAM and power supply in February due to failure of old mainboard and unavailability of new mainboard that supports old CPU (AMD 1600+). The new CPU is Celeron 1.6 w/ 1GB DDR 667MHz RAM. Apart from the upgrade of hardware, I was forced to upgrade my O.S. from Windows 98 to Windows XP as well (because Win'98 can't find a driver for the new mainboard's sound on-board). The software installation was done by the computer shop that I bought hardware from, it has no recovery disc or the like.
During the few months (since February) that I've been using this newly-upgraded PC, I've noticed that there must be something wrong with it because the AVG Free Edition could never update itself (it tried to connect to get an update everyday, but never found the site). Update by pointing location of update files on harddisk was successful some time and the AVG Free is only 2 weeks outdated. I've been thinking off uninstalling it and re-installing again, but have yet to do so.
Firefox 1.5.0.7 may be very old, but it's a Thai Community Edition with almost everything (including error messages and online help) in Thai language. It's the only browser I use at home and it could install JRE with no problem. So there is no reason to upgrade to newer version. You see, I'm still using CuteFTP 1.8 which I've been using for nearly 10 years since I first presented my Web site in November 1998! I'm kind of being conservative. When CuteFTP 1.8 can do everything that I need (uploading files to Host Server), I see no reason to upgrade to newer version.
Now I'm at home enjoying 3-day holidays (3-5 May). I'll be at my office again on 6th of May and will try your suggestion concerning JRE installation. I believe there's no previous version of JS2E Java ever installed there because installation has never succeeded. If this fails, I'll try unistalling & re-installing IE 7.0 as well. I'll come back here to report my progress.
Thanks again for your kind support.

Hello Grif,
Today I tried many things. First I tried to download the JRE 6u6 that you suggested but was unable to download (after clicking on the file
jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe, there was a message "waiting for cds-esd.sun.com" but after waiting 20 minutes, there was no progress. I tried right clicking on the file and saved the link as its own name, there was a message "starting" but after several minutes, it never did start).
So I turned to IE by first uninstalling IE 7.0, downloaded IE 6.0 (ie6setup.exe) but the download finished instantly. I checked its propertied and saw that its size is only 480KB - too small to work in my opinion because IE 7.0 is 15.2 MB. So I discarded IE 6.0 and installed IE 7.0 which I downloaded a week earlier. 15 minutes later, the installer said that "I.E. installation is complete.
Setup was unable to install the latest Windows IE updates. After you restart your computer, open IE, click the Tools button, and click Windows update". I restarted and tried IE 7.0, but like the first time installation, IE 7.0 not only could not connect anywhere, but also hung up my system. I had to use Task Manager to shut it down.
I looked for other alternatives and found Netscape 9.0.0.5 at download.com. But same as the JRE 6u6, I was unable to download the file. Anyway, now I'm back at home and I could download both JRE 6u6 (15.2MB) and Netscape 9.0.0.5 (5.8MB). I'll try installing them at my office tomorrow and will let you know the result.
Thanks for your attention,
Phaisal Hanbuntrong
The computer has some major problems that are probably best fixed by doing a complete recovery/reinstall of Windows and the other programs that came with the computer..
Hope this helps.
Grif
Hello Grif,
A complete recovery or reinstallation of Windows is impossible because I don't have recovery discs, I don't have even the Windows XP disc, not to mention other application programs already installed. I had to do what I said I would. I installed Netscape Navigator 9.0.0.5 downloaded from home, it took a few seconds and it works fine even though it can't display Java applets and it can't fine suitable plugins. So I installed the JRE 6U6 that you suggested which I also downloaded from home, The installation was also successful and after that Netscape can display Java applets. It's nice to see my main menu page - http://www.geocities.com/~falconbbs/modelcnt.htm on my PC at my workplace again. There is no doubt that now Firefox will be able to display that too. As for IE 7.0, I'll just drag its icon to the recycle bin to rest in peace.
My PC may have some problems in downloading and installing some files, but as long as I can still install the files I want, it's not much of a problem. With your kind assistance and guidance, I've finally solved the problem of displaying Java applets. What a relief really!
Thanks for your kind support,
Phaisal Hanbuntrong
