With the Latest updates is Vista good?

by buddypersonguy - 2/10/09 6:19 AM

I'm talking to the people who have Vista Premium or Buisiness. How is it? I hear it's not that bad anymore.

For me it's been good from the start March 2007.

A lot of problems were driver related, with manufacturers failing to supply drivers that worked in Vista.
New Vista packs now come with SP1 included on the dvd.
If you are not using outdated hardware and software you should have no problem.
Some were trying to use 10 year old printers and scanners, about the most complained items, and software from W95 & W98.
Most that worked with XP worked with Vista, specialist business software could be a different problem, you would need to check with the author for compatability.

It is not as bad as people make it sound now

I have Toshiba Satellite laptop with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium. I have all of the updates for it and it runs like a charm. I did not see a big improvement on my laptop after installing service pack one ( due to the fact that it is new at the time), but on my mom's PC I did see a difference in performance.

The Vista man is not bad man!

by kjkulp - 2/13/09 5:44 PM In reply to: With the Latest updates is Vista good? by buddypersonguy

Vista is fine....really! As has been noted, most of the complaints had to do with hardware (driver) incompatibility. A big chunk of complaints were, quite fairly, related to the fact that Vista is a RAM hog (I wouldn't touch it with anything less than 2GB of RAM). Finally, a lot of complaints are also the result of people simply being hyper-critical of some minor (perhaps major to them)thing or two that Vista does differently than XP. I've had nothing but good experiences with Vista and, except for a few small niggling changes, I now prefer it to XP.

VIsta since inception.

As the previous posters said about the driver issues with older hardware and software are confusing to me as you can run the software in a, Previous version of Windows mode, and it should work. The updates have streamlined the bulk of the system hogging resources. The biggest complaint was that their machines needed to be upgraded to run it. A big deal buster for most. Anyone willing to update the hardware were rewarded by a very pleasant Operating System experience. Sure a learning curve, but worth it.

Never A Problem

by rells - 2/13/09 8:07 PM In reply to: With the Latest updates is Vista good? by buddypersonguy

Using Vista Ultimate on Desktop and Premium on Laptop for more than a year now - both are HP's and both have TV tuners, etc.

HP did it right from the get-go and their 1st Vista OS PC's were actually designed with parts that worked well with Vista, unlike most of the stuff that came out in the early days of Vista when inventory needed to be burned (read that "microprocessor chip sets", etc.) to avoid financial pain.

I don't know what all the hoopla is about Vista problems and Windows 7 being the possible panacea, the only thing wrong with Vista is the bad press and a minor learning curve getting used to it's UI. I'd never go back to XP and when I acquire the next new computer, we'll see, but I'll probably be equally content with Windows 7 or whatever SW generation OS comes with the computer!

The updates may have improved security and a few other issues but nothing I've really noticed in performance that wasn't improved by normal maintenance, registry cleanup, defragging, etc. and zero compatibility issues with peripherals.

Certainly M$s best OS to data

by Dango517 - 2/13/09 10:18 PM In reply to: With the Latest updates is Vista good? by buddypersonguy

Vista's early "real" problems were........the U.A.C. (mines still disabled). Some had driver problems and a few old program compatibility issues. All went away by the release of SP1. Vista's two big problems were those that refused to buy a new PC to run it and excessive criticism.

Today it is stable and fast. Seldom has serious problems and all that hardware makes it zoom and look great.

Unfortunately, the bottom line for Windows Vista has been that it has been unloved.

It seems fine since SP1

by Jelly Baby - 2/14/09 3:14 AM In reply to: Certainly M$s best OS to data by Dango517

I waited until SP1 appeared before moving to Vista 64 and with very few exceptions (no drivers for an old sound card and no 64 bit Nikon support)it has been absolutely fine. It is much faster and more stable than my old XP Pro - but that's probably got more to do with the extra memory which a 64 bit OS can access.

I suspect I'll wait for Win 7 SP1 too....... :¬)

Some teething.

by perceptiveone - 2/14/09 7:11 AM In reply to: With the Latest updates is Vista good? by buddypersonguy

Most of the problems I have had were the initial ones that most people have with a new o/s. I bought it before the paint was even dry and support was even wetter. So issues took awhile to figure out.
Some were just adjusting to not being admin. I have since fixed that.
And of course some programs refused to work.
The two biggest problems were failing power supplies Antec ea 430 after the 4th one I bought an enermax. Of course this has nothing to do with vista but their may be a conspiracy out there....
And the other problem was just last week. After the updates on the 9feb09 it refused to boot. Went to chkdisk then it would just hang.
Safe mode just would hang after all drvs loaded.
So I pulled the sata plug on the chkdisk drive one of three and it booted. So it must be the drive, well no. Rolled back the updates reconnected the drive it booted but the drives appeared but no access. Put the drive in another machine and it worked fine.
So I reinstalled the updates rebooted and now it refuses to boot again. Unplug the second drive now there are only two drives in the machine. It boots, roll back the updates reconnect the drive no problems.
Next day there was another update. So I try it no problem and then it automatically installed the updates from the day before and no problems. This can happen on any o/s.

The biggest disappoint would be the fact that unlike 98 and xp and 2000 their seemed to be a lack of customizations/tweak/applets. There wasnt even a tweakui (of course someone tryed to market a paid version but not worth the $$$). This could be from the fact that people just didnt buy vista or vista is just a more mature o/s.
I have found one app called terracopy that fits the bill but just one.

Surprised - but I love it.

When I bought my Dell Inspiron laptop almost three years ago, I chose XP-Media Center Edition but made sure the PC would be vista-ready for whenever I decided to upgrade. (Intel T4200 @ 1.83 GHZ and ATI Mobility Radeon X1400)

Well I finally did it. But first I upgraded my ram to 4 GB (got some on ebay for about $50) and bought a new 320 GB HD and a copy of Vista Ultimate.

I really love it. Although I'm not usually hung up on graphics, I really do love the Aero displays, especially the way it you can view the little mini-displays of your minimized windows and the cool way to line up your active tasks in 3-D. Also, I installed something called 360 Desktop which really opens up some room on the desktop.

I also really appreciate the new Search feature and was thrilled that it recognized all the photos I had tagged with Adobe Elements (which I haven't even installed on this new HD). Then I discovered that I could even stack my photos based on keywords. I have thousands because I have a hard time throwing any of them away :-). So I'm really happy with the way Vista helps me search them so efficiently.

Because I had legal copies of both XP and Vista (full version/not an upgrade), I installed XP as a Virtual PC to run in a window. That's a great tool which is not limited to Vista, but which probably does require a good bit of ram to work efficiently. So now I have the best of both. XP and Vista, although I am discovering that I only rarely open the XP window.

I have not had any problems with drivers. In fact, I have not had any problems at all. No crashes.

So my advice would be to get the latest Vista if you have the appropriate hardware. RAM and HDs are very cheap these days - I wouldn't scrimp on either one.

Vista is excellent!

by Zeppo - 2/14/09 1:54 PM In reply to: With the Latest updates is Vista good? by buddypersonguy

I much prefer Vista to WinXP. I never get a blue screen, never. When an application craps out I can shut it down instead of rebooting Windows.

Too, the security features on Vista are much stronger - I only use freeware anti-virus software now (AVAST) along with Windows Defender for malware. I can't remember when I had a virus or sypware problem!

I also like the START button feature were one in WinXP could access a RUN box. In Vista it's a SEARCH box. You can type part of any doc or program on your computer and it will produce a list to choose from. Much easier than going into specific folders and searching for that one document you created some time ago but now need because it has some key code in it to reinstall a program.

Vista is very good. Negativity can spread like wildfire, which is what happened with Vista. All it took was some tech folks to make a big stink about because it was so different, not what they used to, to publish negative reviews that turned off much the public before they ever got a chance to try it. Vista since SP1 is very sold and great improvement, in my opinion, over WinXP.

Vista is very good!

by klaus_schumacher - 2/14/09 3:18 PM In reply to: Vista is excellent! by Zeppo

People always compare established OS (XP) with the newcomer (VISTA) but they forget all the problems they had. I had only minor problems at the beginning (you should have 2 MB Ram) and the driver issues. Now after many updated VISTA is running perfect. The system was never hanging. I am very satisfied.I am not interested in WINDOWS 7 because I believe that VISTA is the best for the time being.I use only VISTA HOME BASIC and this is enough for me.The most important part for me is that VISTA is very reliable, not crashing and nice to look at.

Have Vista Home Premium (x32) with SP1

by CBJIM - 2/14/09 3:44 PM In reply to: With the Latest updates is Vista good? by buddypersonguy

Have same thing on wifes machine.
I've had no serious issues since day one.
Wifes machine, newer then mine, more memory, faster chipsets...nothing but trouble.
I suspect hers is a hardware issue tho.
Just got it back from HP will see.
Overall, I like Vista a whole lot better then XP.
Have been using windows sine it was only called windows, didn't even need/require a mouse!!
This is best version yet, IMO.

xp

by perceptiveone - 2/14/09 5:05 PM In reply to: Have Vista Home Premium (x32) with SP1 by CBJIM

The biggest problem I had with xp was it would constant slow. I would recover it and with in two weeks go back to exactly the same speed it was before I recovered it. It was manageable but I didnt when you spend the money and time for just manageable speed. I had no spyware, no viruses and corrupt programs.

is Vista good?

by K. MAKRIS - 2/15/09 3:40 AM In reply to: With the Latest updates is Vista good? by buddypersonguy

It seems that this OS will have the same fate as Windows Me.
No updates will make it a resounding success.
