using a hard-disk recorder after February 2009

by amibulk - 12/23/08 10:26 AM

Hi video gurus,

1. I have a Panasonic DMR-EH50 (dvd recorder + hard disk recorder + analog tuner). It downloads a TV guide off the air for scheduled recordings. Terrific unit!

2. I also a LG unit which combines dvd player with atsc tuner.

3. I don't subscribe to cable, satellite, etc.

Now, I wonder what happens after Feb 2009?

I know I can tune the LG to a digital TV station, and record programs on the Panasonic via one of its auxiliary inputs, using manual recording (set day, time, channel etc.). It works.

I wonder if one of those "coupon" converter boxes is going to improve this procedure? That is, what happens when I connect the output of this new box to the Panasonic antenna input?

Many thanks!

AM

(NT) I would think you might need one for the Panasonic.

Actually.

I read your post twice and you appear to have it figured out. The only item I think the coupon tuner could help with is that it would give you another input. So if your recorder can select two inputs you can schedule the recorder from 2 choices rather than 1.

I guess I was hoping to discover new possibilities...

New possibilities.

As I have such a DVR but won't get hit with this as fast or hard as you I still was pondering New Possibilities and came up with this.

Do you remember the IR BLASTER product? Ok, let's say I team up that with my recorder. Now I use the IR BLASTER to change the channel and on the DVR I just record whatever the channel is that comes from my convertor box.

Help with digital antenna signals and older components.

This looks like a good place to ask a variation of the question...

I’ve done a lot of research in the past month about the new TV technologies-- I ended up with a new HDTV and a new digital antenna. I just want over-the-air programming-- the TV picture is terrific, but I’m still puzzled about how the components are affected and can’t find much info about this.

I’m still using a VCR to record on occasion (that’s AV1 for the new TV) and I have a good DVD player (that’s COMP 1.) I added a splitter to the antenna cable, with one coaxial cable going to the VCR and another to the TV.

The VCR/TV connection is via composite cables since that’s the best available output on the VCR. I used component cables for the DVD/TV connection since that’s the best available on the DVD player.

I programmed the TV for the digital version of all channels, skipping the analog versions. It appears that the VCR is recording the analog signals; quality is not good at all, which I understand since the new TV amplifies the flaws. Will it make any difference if I add a converter box to the VCR? Or will I have to add one after Feb. 17th?

Alternatively, if I buy a new DVR to replace the VCR, would I connect it to the antenna in the same way (via the splitter) or do I need to get one with a built-in digital tuner?

Sorry the explanation took so long, but I hope it’s clear. I just can’t find much info about using older components with over-the-air reception.
Thanks!

Digituners for Older components: Air reception

Yes, you need a converter box between the coax cable out and the VCR input. If upu get a new DVR, it must have an ATSC tuner and connect to antenna from splitter.

Finally figured it out...

Thanks. I did add a converter box and the VCR is working fine.
When I replace the VCR with a digital recorder, I'm pretty sure a non-tuner DVR would work in the same way.
